Yep, very sad. Leaves behind his wife, 9 year old daughter and 3 year old son.

It's on all of the Australian news websites ( www.smh.com.au http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/ ) and a few NZ ones ) www.stuff.co.nz www.newstalkzb.co.nz ) and his wikipedia entry has already been updated. Apparently the accident was at midday QLD time - about 3 hours ago.

B just came home and told me...it seems totally unreal...

Australia Zoo, Animal conservation, Queensland and most of all his family has suffered a huge loss...love him or hate him the guy was a legend. I personally was a big fan of his as crazy as he could be. He did amazing work.

I really feel sorry for Terri, Bhindi and Bob.

what i think sucks is that if you are a "normal person", the media cannot release the name of the deceaseduntil the family has been notified. it should be the same for celebrities - his poor wife. Can you imagine finding out that in the newspaper???? When i was sixteen I found out my bestfriend's sister had died through the paper (we were on holiday). it was horrible!

Posted By: mum2paris
Date Posted: 04 September 2006 at 9:34pm
I was the opposite - i went to school one monday morning when i was form 1 and was wondering where my best friend was.. asked someone and they go "oh she's dead" being a form 1 kid.. i think "what a dick whatever!!" till i indeed find out that after school on the friday she had gone home and died of a sudden unexplained brain haemorrhage.

That so sucks about the croc hunter..

OK - Am I the only one that found him ANNOYING!!!???

Don't get me wrong, I am very sorry for his family and think no one should have to leave us that young BUT....

I mean aaaarggggghhhhh I couldn't stand the guy!! He always seemed to be "annoying" the animals to get a bigger reaction out of them or get them moving - I guess this time it lead to this!!

I'm kinda with you Ana... watched a show once where he was playing with some scorpions, poking them with a stick then marvelling at how mad they were getting. "Ooo look, we've got a fiesty one here!" - That's because you are poking him with a stick!!!

He was cute with his kids tho. And yeah, so young. I'd absolutely hate to leave such young kidlets behind.

And Kat - haha - that's ok. I'm used to getting Greenpeace campaigns forwarded to me by Zeke's Dad, so yours was nothing!

I didnt really like him myself, thought he was a bit over the top but its still a bit of a shock and I just feel sorry for his family. Plus cos with the whole tv show and everything you sort of get to know his 'family' including the staff who worked for him and you can just picture how devastated they must be.

i didn't really like him but i feel so sorry for his family, on the news it said that his wife was in a remote part of tasmania and they hadn't been able to get hold of her. imagine coming home and everyone else knows that your husband is dead but you.
and those poor kids! they're way too young to lose their daddy.

I was reading in the Herald that for some in Australia his death is being equated with the death of Princess Di and that many in Queensland want a state funneral if his wife agrees.

To be honest I can kind of understand it...as annoying as some found him he did so much for animal conservation in spite of his unorthodox methods.

And I'll fully admit to having a blub over his death. (yeah I know I'm sad!)

A couple of DVDs I ordered last week arrived in the mail today - one of them was Wiggles Safari - with Steve Irwin at the Australia Zoo. Was really sad to see his face on the cover nad think about his kiddies.
As much as I cringed when he was on TV, you could never say he wasn't passionate about the environment and animal welfare - and he's probably taught a heck of a lot of kiddies in the world about the plight of animals etc.
Now I'll try not to let the preggie hormones take over and blub while Andrew's watching the Safari....

I was just reading an Australian paper online and a Queensland sergent who reviewed the footage of Steve Irwin's death has said that there were no suspicious circumstances and the attack by the stingray was unprovoked.

It makes the whole thing seem even more insane to me that Steve Irwin could literally handle all those dangerous animals and yet it was an unprovoked animal attack that took his life.

Sooooooo sad. My girls love his shows and both cried when they heard the news. As for me I had one of those VIVID pregnancy dreams where my whole family died. It only because  I watched the late news in bed before going to sleep and it was centred around the death.....

I was not a fan, but anyone whose life is taken in such a shocking manner and when so young is always a shock and upsetting. At least it was instant (or so I have heard) and he died doing something that he loved.

He will be missed my many

Same i wasnt a fan but its still a shame when someone leaves us at a young age like that! I really feel for his family esp his wife knowing after the media knew!

Does anyone seem to notice the pattern with wildlife enthusiasts(sp?) dying at the paws/stingers/teeth/whathaveyou of what they study or get involved with?

Did anyone watch The Grizzly Man on discovery? He was mauled and eaten by a bear, its just so bizarre how wildlife people get killed by wildlife, maybe they get a little tooo close?

Date Posted: 05 September 2006 at 6:23pm
The horrible thing this time though is that he wasn't wrangling an animal or anything...when B told me I was waiting to hear he'd been mauled by a croc...but to just swim over a stingray and have it jab him seems so insane!

On the news they were saying the footage filmed at his death my never be shown...I for one really hope it's not!! To me that would be macarbe!!

B doesn't think they will show that part of it but what worries me is the some media tried to show pics of Princess Di's death so you never know how far some will go to sell a newspaper or magazine!

At least it's not in the hands of the paparazzi/women's mags. Since his producer is a mate and his wife will have control of the footage once it is returned from the police, there is a good show it will never be released. I hope it's never shown.

I hope it is never released either. Even as a journalist I still think SOME things are sacred...

John Howard WOULD want a state funeral - Steve Irwin must have been one of the only Aussies who said nice things about him to the press. The rest of them were busy wondering why the heck they voted for him...

Maya used to watch the Crocodile HUnter Diaries with Willie on a Sat or Sun afternoon, I got a surprise when she recognised him on the front page of the paper yesterday and said "thats the crocodile man".

Here is a tribute that someone posted on another board:

http://www.break.com/index/steve_irwin_tribute.html

Isn't it strange that until someone famous passes away, you don't really know much about them until then.. unless you're a real fan.. like I now know more about Steve than I ever would have before. All I knew before was that he was a crazy guy who worked with wildlife..

on pulp sport last night they did a take off of steve irwin, usually i find it pretty funny but watching it last night i just couldn't stop cringing.
i wonder if they'll keep doing that now that he's dead, it's kinda disrespectful.

I don't think the Pulp Sport take off was disrespectful coz it wasn't at all close to the Crocodile Hunter even though it was meant to be him. They did have a small tribute at the start of the show as well.

Did anyone else see 60 Minutes tonight? I just cried when they had Steve Irwin's piece on. Especially when they had clips with his kids and wife in them. Gosh, I couldn't imagine Ashlee growing up without her dad.

Amazingly I didn't cry though I thought I would!

The news here hasn't reported it but it was confirmed yesterday that Steve Irwin's funneral was held on Saturday as speculated. It was a "candlit" type funneral around a campfire on the grounds of Aussie Zoo as Steve Irwin would have wanted. Family and close friends were in attendance. Apparently permission was also been obtained for him to be buried on the grounds though I haven't read anything that confirms this part.

I'm glad his family and friends had the chance to have the private funneral without the public or media getting in on it. The public service is meant to be next week.

I think I also heard confirmation that Peter Brock will be having a state funneral.
