Okay i started Rhiannon on solids two weeks ago...she is eating a tin of watties for a day (i give her one meal a day) plus drinking 5x 180ml bottles
today she started crying once her solids were finished...so my question is how much should i be giving her and how often?

Hi there - I am definately no expert, but I always fed my little man according to his appetite. You may find that she may need more than one meal a day?
Fabian is now almost 9months and I started him on solids around the same age.

i agree with fabians mum. i just fed mikey according to his appetite as well, some days he was hungrier than others. maybe rhiannon's starting to need 2 solid feeds a day or a wee bit more than one can.
i'm not sure though because mikey didn't start solids until he was 6 months old so things might be a bit different with a younger baby.

Are you giving her a milk feed before solids? I would just try giving her a little more, or maybe another feed like thwe others said, but I also didnt start Han til almost 6 months

Well I had solids group today (boring, annoying but some what informative). Let baby lead the feeding and just change on to the appropriate foods as she age progresses. Theres a pull out guide in the "Thriving under five" book that was in your bounty pack (if you got one) or you should have got one from a plunket nurse at some stage. What about starting to have some breakfast and then some dinner instead of one meal a day?

The thing that frustrated me most about starting solids is that there is HEAPS of info about what and when you should be feeding them, but nothing about how much! I think we have all had the same problem Kaz, but its really hard to remember even if it was only a few months ago

there is so much info out there its confusing...
Rhiannon loves her solids...she is definitley ready for them...has 5 bottles a day...will not drink more than 180mls...
as for giving her solids i know plunket says to give the bottle first then the solids but ive found that either mid morning, or mid afternoon she is almost chewing her hand off, so some days she has her bottle at 10am....her solids at 12pm and then a bottle anywhere from 1pm.
hell i figure as long as she is happy and healthy thats all that matters, and she does tell me when she is full

Don't know if this helps but Plunket told me when I started Zac on solids to give it to him at 11:00 am as I was doing the same timing as you. She told me that 12:00 pm was too late - I didn't think to ask why though!

Thanks nikki,
Well since she is now eating one full meal of solids a day, she has actually started sleep from 8pm-6am, and even though they say babies on solids dont sleep any more or longer than babies who aren't you cant tell me that it was all just a cowinkydink :)

Kaz I found that solids made Taine wake up more when we first started. I don't think he was ready for them now that i think back. He loved it, but he is a much more sensitive kid than Jake. Jake could be fed anything and be fine - I fed Taine....something forget what, and he got a nasty rash.

Jack was like that too Kazzle the day i started i started him on 2 feeds cos he was drinking at least 8 feeds from me and gobbled the solids down. I would add in another feed if she seems still hungry, if she doesn't want ti she won't eat it.
The day I started Jack on solids was the day he stopped wanting night feeds. It so makes them sleep better.
