ok so I am wanting to know if anyone has done the castor oil thing and does it really work - if so how fast does it work. I am being induced next thursday so am thinking that it would be nice if I went into labour 'naturally' verse being induced???
any thoughts....

All I know is it isn't recommended and if you are cr*pping yourself in labour they won't be too happy with you, esp if you complain what with it being self induced and all.
I know someone who took a whole bottle and it worked almost immediately but the hospital staff and her mw were very pissed off with her.
My opinion is it's better to just let things happen naturally, clearly if nothing has happened yet either your body or the baby isn't ready yet. I personally would never touch the stuff in that situation but each to their own I guess...

we were strongly advised against it at antenatal class. it gives you nasty diarrhea and is meant to be awful. and it doesnt necessarily work.

Yup and the dehydration *may* cause labour but it may just give you the runs and 2 tablespoons probably wouldn't do much! At least you know there IS an end in sight! Even though it may not feel like it!

I wouldnt touch that stuff with a 50ft barge pole!!!
Its nasty and all it doesn is give you the sh*ts, and sometimes violently and irriates the uterus, but this can be really bad for labour!
My MW told me to stay away from it and said it can be really dangerous.
**Edited to change tough to touch lol

Agree with Sheza, especially if the baby isn't ready, even in the right position.

I heard from an neonates nurse that its basically poisoning the environment around your baby and that is why it works, and quite often it can send your baby into distress... IMO not worth it, baby will come when he/she is ready and its not like in the grand scheme of things another few days or even a week or so will be anything major, I would much rather be induced than go through what Castor Oil can do to you and your baby

I tried it- its disgusting, liquid plastic. DONT DO IT. I dont think it did anything, just made me have loose bowels for a day, two days later I had my mucus plug go (we think), and minor contractions, but DD was 2 weeks over so I dont think it was the castor oil. There are plenty of other natural ways to try and get bubs out, going for a nice walk is one, nothing to long and strenuous tho. good luck

yeah,I would keep away from it personally, you may very well find baby comes naturally anyway ...without having to resort to drinking that

I remember my gran giving it to me when I had been naughty and then when I actually needed it trying to bribe me with $$ to take it but I wouldn't.

Apparently you can end up dehydrated from having the sh*ts. Which is not good, they tell you to stay hydrated during labour for a reason (dehydration will make the labour worse, tired, lack of engery, more cramping). Wouldn't bother with it. Try something like lots and lots of walking.

I'm naughty, I took castor oil with my first child and I still remember the taste ... it would have to be the most revolting thing Ive ever drunk! I mixed it with pineapple juice and it took me 12 years to be able to drink pineapple juice again ... I was 6 days overdue, and it did start labour. It works by giving you diarrhea cramps which irritate the uterus, in turn producing prostaglandin (sp??) which causes contractions... I made sure I drank lots of water to avoid dehydration and definitely didn't have diarhea all through labour, but I did only take 2 tablespoons not a bottle LOL... The memory of the taste was enough to put me off doing it again with my second baby... My friend did it with both her kids ... and it worked both times, and I was there for the birth and there wasn't any diarrhea issues thank goodness! Still I'm sure there are more pleasant ways to start labour cos honestly it tastes repulsive!

Yeah, I know a girl who took it with all three of her kids and had no issues, but even at 8 days over I wasn't tempted to, I had heard too many bad things about the taste ,I would rather try everything else first, eg nipple stimulation, eating curry, eating pineapples, running up and down the stairs, sex etc etc (and then just waiting )
