Argh, went to the Doctors today after having a cough and sore throat for a week and then yesterday getting diarrhea and just generally feeling crap The diarrhea has created haemorrhoids or irritated some that were already there (seeing as it's supposed to be bought on by straining/constipation rather than the runs). And it bloody well hurts. Seriously do not recommend the combo of haemorrhoids, diarrhea and coughing (diarrhea burns the haemorrhoids and the coughing causes contraction, exactly where you don't want to be contracting with haemorrhoids....).

Anyway, the Doctor wasn't actually much help with the rest of my ailments but decided to prescribe me haemorrhoid ointment. I've got it home and went to use it but the instructions explicitly state "ULTRAPROCT must not be used by women who are pregnant, or who think they may be pregnant. If you suspect you are pregnant while already using ULTRAPROCT, you should consult your doctor as soon as possible."

In another section though it says:

"You must not use ULTRAPROCT if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant. Corticosteroid preparations such as ULTRAPROCT should not be applied during the first three months of pregnancy"

So, you don't use it at all or just not during the first trimester?

Not sure I have enough faith in the Doctor I saw to go ahead and use it anyway. She's never seemed super helpful when any of us go in there sick.... But then she is a Doctor, so must know something.... Am in two minds about whether to use it or not. I'm sure there are other people on here who have used ointment for haemmorhoids - was it corticosteroid ointment and is it safe to use in the last trimester of pregnancy?

I would double check before you used it - if you ring the pharmacy your pharmacist might be able to clear that up for you, or perhaps healthline will have advice.

I am curious how an ointment you apply (i assume!) to the bum can affect the baby.

It depends on whether they are internal or external! If they are internal there are certain things that you cant use.

I would recommend Proctosedyl - its safe and works instantly! I know from very recent experience of not being able to walk or sit down I was in so much pain! My midwife is happy with me using it and have checked with my GP and chemist.

Hope that you get some relief soon! Best to get them under control before they get too bad!

I just used that Anusol cream for mine, and that was all good, worked too.

I know exactly how you are feeling too, I had them like that when pregnant with Bella and I had Diarreah once and that flared them up and I seriously could hardly walk! Nasty nasty!

I used Ultraproct while I was pregnant - I saw that on the instructions and questioned it, and It is really the first 12 weeks of pregnancy they recommend not using it like so many things!

used sparingly and for only short periods of time to external areas wouldnt cause any issues
the concern is its a steroid, and the reason for these warnings is generally due to no one offering their babies for testing - for obvious reasons

The drugs can be absorbed in to the blood stream, but issues are only likely to come if your inserting loads, often for days on end.

I used this while pregnant , in the 3rd trimester, and my babe is a right chub and very healthy
but I would advise to use only when necessary

and I worked in pharmacy for many years so I no a bit about this stuff, and Im picking your doc could tell you were pregnant

I'm using it at the moment, prescribed whilst pregnant. Only thing GP didn't do as usual is prescibe the suppositories that go with the ointment, apparently the ultraproct suppositories are a higher dose and sit in your system longer. He was perfectly happy with the ointment applied a little as needed. SUCH a relief A sore bum is no fun!!!
