Hi Everyone,

Yesterday at the midwife my blood pressure had gone up to 130/90.

She didn't seem too worried, apparently if it gets over 90 she will be worried and run some more tests.

Just wondering if any of you have any of you had high blood pressure? How high does it need to be to worry? I'm not due to see her again for a fortnight, if there is a problem, how quickly can it continue to rise?

I feel perfectly fine at the moment, slight swelling in hands and feet, and I have gained 4 kgs in the past month, nearly double my monthly weight gain to this point.. Do you think I need to worry?

Hopefully with a nice restful fortnight it will be back down next app!!

I have what is considered high BP for me, but most people would still be considered to be in the normal range at what I am (138/88) MW and I were discussing it last thursday (as I am firmly on PET watch) as to what constitutes high BP. The reccommended level at which your MW is meant to begin considering further monitoring is when the bottom number is 15 higher than your booking BP.

BP is only one factor that they look at when considering PET - the pee on the stick test (protein in your urine) is another, considerable swelling in feet/legs/arms/face is another (MW should be looking for pitting odema and overall swelling rather than just slightly swollen feet), urinc acid (a blood test is required for this).

Apparetnly (?) BP that is caused by pregnancy alone can't be reduced without meds or delivery. I was getting super super stressed at the hospital the other day and thought my BP would have gone through the roof - it went down, lol.

If you have any reason for concern just call your MW and get her to talk through what to do. And try and keep your feet up as much as possible.

(all non medical advice by me )

How far along are you? I had borderline high blood pressure my entire pregnancy except for the stupid first BP test in hospital at around 18weeks. it was 165/95 and got everyone worried. I had a perfectly normal pregnancy and birth. You basically just get told to watch out for swelling, a sharp pain under your ribs on the right side, and you may get checked more often with the pee protein thing and BP.

Mine seems to go up and down all over the show. It was 90/30 the other day which was a bit odd, but i've made a comeback to 120/40. They need 2 signs of PET (like the ones weeheebaby mentioned) before they'll start getting excited about that - and when they mean swelling they mean can't see your eyes because your face is so puffy swelling. If you've got concerns though, always give your midwife a call.

When my bottom number hit 90 I was admitted (but I also had swelling and traces if protein). At 100 they were checking my BP more often (instead if 4 hourly). At 105 I was put on BP medication. When my bottom number hit 120 I wasn't allowed to take the cuff off, was literally pumped up as soon as it finished, and they were shoving a lot of drugs into me awfully fast and a LOT of people were in my room all of a sudden

If you have any concerns don't hesitate to ring your midwife, any more swelling, any sudden swelling, if your swelling is worse in the morning than it is at night, if you push your finger into your swelling and it stays there for a long time.....
Any headaches, starry vision, black spots in your vision your midwife should be told about immediately...

Well, thats the rules I was told about But if your worried at any point, don't be afraid to ring your midwife, and ask her to check you out!

My blood pressure was 140/78 last time i went to see my midwife. I am only 14 weeks (nearly 15). I am really worried too about my BP as there was a little tiny bit of protein in my urine aswell. She said that could of been due to accidentally mixing discharge in with the pee (I had to just hold the tiny stick under my urine stream lol which made it VERY VERY difficult!)

She told me not to worry though, as she said I am about 4 points (whatever that means) off it being high....

OP I dont think you need to worry. If anything does end up happening there are things that can be done to bring your BP down :D
