Subject: Bad early scan
Date Posted: 08 December 2010 at 1:03pm
I've just been for my 6 week scan that my specialist wanted me to have to "make sure everything is in the right place" and it didn't go so well! He was only able to see the gestational sac but nothing else. He said that it could just be too early and I have to come back next week for another one and have hcg bloods done in between but now I'm really worried

I'm so annoyed that I had such an early scan in the first place because I knew there was a chance of not being able to see a heartbeat but I hoped we would see something!

I was hoping someone might have a similar story with a happy ending to make me feel a bit better??

Big hugs LR!!! This happened to a good friend of mine and the same thing had happened - and she now has a 6 month old so definitely can be all good!!

I have been through the wait for another scan in a week, and know how hard it is - much worse than the TWW, so make sure you take care of yourself and vent as much as you need!!

I am sure it will just be too early and all will be fine, at 7 weeks you will see the feotal pole and the heat beat I am sure

Its very common not to see anything until around 6/12 - 7 weeks.

It could be that you arent as far along as you think.

I wouldnt be worried at all. Maybe book in another scan for 1 weeks time.

Was your scan an internal???

*hugs* dont panic yet hun!

Your only just 6 weeks, and it is possible you may be a teeny bit further behind than you think, also sometimes a heartbeat isnt seen until closer to 7 weeks.

If your hcgs are good then things are most likey going fine in there.

Thanks guys, I guess I just don't want to get my hopes up in case it's bad news. It didn't help that the specialist gave a 5 min speech afterwards about how common miscarriages are

SMS, yep it was an internal one.

My dr did this after he confirmed Ollie's pregnancy too! Why would you do that?!?!

FX that its just a little too early to see bub properly. All the best for your next scan.

Happened to me too. hey could only see the sac and told me I could be misscarrying but I knew I wasn't. I knew I was pregnant. I was right. I left my body to do it's own thing and had no hcg tests carried on with my morning sickness and went along to the 12wk scan to see the baby I knew was there

So fingers crossed for you it's just too early xo

LR, I think Anja had the EXACT same thing happen, was made to go for an early scan and saw a sac, a later scan showed bubs was there, just a little smaller than expected?

I had that with Jae too, went in too early and there was just a sac (internal scan), 10 days later went for a repeat and saw a teeny tiny blob measuring 3 days later than my dates (and thats with knowing my ov date, no room for error there!) with a heartbeat. This time I delayed going for a scan til 7 weeks as I knew any earlier would risk seeing just a sac and leave me worrying over what *might* be

There are a LOT of stories like this, majority with happy endings, dont worry about anything just yet, have they told you when to expect a repeat scan??

Thanks everyone, your comments make me feel a bit better, it is so hard not to worry!

BK, the next scan is scheduled for Tues so I should be 6 weeks 6 days. I had my first HCG BT today so will get that result tomorrow and then more on Fri and Mon to see if the levels are doubling.

I had the same thing with one of my pregnancies, and I got the whole MC speal too... but all was fine!! If the scan was transabdo it can be even more inaccurate from what I understand... I totally wouldn't worry if I was you (I know that is easier said than done) but I'd say you're just a bit early and as long as you have no bleeding or pain I would just assume all is good!

Geez LR just re-read your post above and you had your scan even earlier than my first one! And yeah my FS casually mentioned that "it might not be viable" which are the worst words to hear when this is all you've been hoping and wishing for for so long. FS can be so bloody insensitive sometimes, for saying stuff like that AND for making you have such an early scan in the first place!

I'm with Freckle, if you have no signs that anything is wrong then I would take that to mean all is well! HCG will confirm it but I'm sure it'll be going up as it should. Remember you had a lovely strong BFP too, that's got to mean hormone levels are way up there.

As I said elsewhere, thinking of you chick, it's a hard crash down to earth when you've been on cloud nine from just finding out you're finally UTD!

Hey LittleRed - same thing happened with us (we had spotting and a bit of bleeding) our first scan was only the sac - then I spent ages googling (sp) it and kind of got a 50/50 result with half the people not seeing anything and the other half with a heartbeat.

BUT then went pack 7 days later and there it was a little flicker

SO fingers crossed and sending you sticky baby dust hope you next scan goes well. Please let us know, will be thinking of you

It is so common in scans before 7-8 weeks, that is why they prefer doing them at 12 weeks. I have had early scans & seen no heart beat till the next one.

i am surprised they did not tell you that as you are only just 6weeks...rather slack of them.

I had the same thing (empty sak).. sent back for another scan and saw the heartbeat at 7 weeks 1 day. 6 weeks is too early to see a heartbeat in most cases. Fingers crossed for great HCG results.

Hey Ladies.

Needing an E-Hug. I too had a bad early scan this morning, was told that we're 6.5 + weeks, baby had a good strong heart beat.....BUT....there isn't enough fluid around it, so we were given the 'you have a 50/50 chance of loosing this pregnancy' speil....and then told to go home & relax (seriously, relax? how do I do that now!?).

So we're booked again next week to check up on it and if we have any bleeding or pain, I'm to race back in for another scan immediately.

Has anyone else had this issue with low fluid levels in early scans? (PS - Our dates / MW thought we were 8.5 weeks now, so Dr thinks babes has taken a while to implant and that might be causing the issue if it's not quite attached properly).

x (yip boo, major tears!)

Posted By: Marengo
Date Posted: 09 December 2010 at 1:00pm
ehug muriwai!

from the limited internet reaserch i have done about low fluid ive found its 50 50 too..

its so horrible that at this early stage there is really only the 'watch and wait' sort of thing.. i know how you feel sort of, my last pregnancy my baby hadnt implanted properly so there was a bleed behind the placenta, a bit different but still had to 'wait and see' ..

i think relax just means rest and take care of yourself, there is no chance that you will not stress about this, but try to calm yourself that what will be will be.. its very hard, i was panicing, and i think that didnt help me at all,

best of luck to both of you ladies with these scanning issues .. hopefully you will be all telling us next week your babies are all doing well..

muriwai.
My dr said "go home and don't worry". Yeah right! Easy for them to say.

I don't know about the fluid sorry but I have heard several people say that they were measuring behind at an early scan and then caught up to where they thought they should have been later on.

It's not an easy wait but I guess that's all we can do.

Murawai - sorry your scan didn't go well I don't know anything about fluid levels sorry but I really hope you get a better result next time!

Thats perfect for 6 weeks, I went in at 5 weeks this time and was only 2000, with Jae it was just over 3000 at 5.5 weeks, so 16,000 is spot on! The initial number isnt what you need to look at though, its the doubling time between that number and what tomorrows one says, but I'm sure all will be fine

LR - your story is almost the same as mine! Had a scan for a possible ectopic at 6 weeks, nothing in sac, hCG also about 16000. BT 2 days later was 26800 or something, not actually doubling but still rising, although enough to make me still nervous!!! Booked follow up scan for when I should be 8 weeks 3 days to make sure it would be definitive one way or the other (in case 7 weeks was still too early), and got a perfect little embryo measuring 8 weeks exactly. Hope your story keeps following mine!

My second result was 21900. The dr said he was happy with that and it fits within the range, plus apparently once it gets to this stage it's only supposed to double every five-ish days?

Yay LR, sounds good.

I had an early scan too and no heartbeat, just an empty sac so had a scan a couple of weeks on and there was the little heartbeat and cute little arms and legs growing! was astounded to see that a shape was already forming.

Something interesting about this...after the first scan seeing the baby, the Dr changed my due date to about a week later but the second scan back to earlier. Now we were pretty confident about when baby was conceived but then DS was about 10 days late so maybe the later due date was right after all....who knows! Maybe some babies are just a bit slower at implanting or something, maybe fertilisation takes place later than thought etc...

LR I had this happen. I had bleeding too though so that is what prompted the early scan. I actually have a piece of paper confirming probable miscarriage somewhere. The first lot of HCG's were really low for me but three days later they had sky rocketed and the scan the following week showed a perfect heart beating away.

My probable miscarriage is now 9 years old. Fit and healthy.

Awesome hcg levels!!

We had an early scan... first an external, which just saw a yolk sack, and then an internal, which showed a little blob, and a heartbeat - 5w 2d...  I'd read somewhere that the heartbeat doesn't appear until about 6 weeks... so either the sonographer's measurement was very conservative....or.....?

It sounds fine to me LR, and didnt your Dr say it should only double every 5ish days now? So thats about right from when you had your last test as it hasnt been 5 days yet.

Do you have a scan tomorrow?

It rose LR, that's the main thing! I remember when Emmi was doing her serial hcgs and she was around 7 weeks and it took 11 days to double, from memory... so yours sounds fine!!! Is your scan this week? If it was me I would stop the hcgs (they are too hard to interpret now), and trust that your body will tell you... as long as your not cramping and bleeding I would assume all is okay... esp if you have MS etc...

As easy as it is to say and I know how hard it is to actually do, try not to worry to much. It has gone up by quite a bit, and as the girls say it does slow down in doubling.
MS is a great sign, I am sure you will be fine tomorro.

Hi - great news.

this happened to us - went for scan at 6.5 weeks but nothing, scanner person said not good.

Went back a week later and all OK - measuring 6.5 (when it should have been 7.5 weeks as we did IVF we knew for certain).

all growing well now and no complications, but we think baby took awhile to implant - growing consistently but a week behind.
