DS is still having 2 sleeps per day. He has started sleeping 9.30am - midday (instead of up to 1 hr in the morning) and will then want another sleep at 3.30pm for a couple of hours. It sounds quite nice, but in reality he wakes up ratty after the pm sleep and isn't ready to go to bed at his normal bedtime of 7pm. I've always let him sleep when he's wanted to but this really isn't working. Should I not let him sleep for longer than an hour in the morning and encourage a good sleep early afternoon or try switching to one sleep late morning. I don't like change, why can't he keep to his usual sleeps :-)

how long does he sleep over night? If he is ready for sleep at 9.30am this suggests that he's been up a while. Therefore is probably getting less than 11 hours over night? Might be that day sleep is eating into night sleep.

Has he started walking and is really tired at nap time? Or is he sick?

Some people do a short morning nap of for a while, say 20 mins, followed by longer post lunch sleep, the morning one gets shorter and the other sleep gets pushed forward to lunch time. Didn't do it myself but someone out there probably has.

Good luck!

Oh and meant to say that the lunchtime one becomes one big sleep.

sorry forgot to mention about nighttime sleep, sleeps for 11+ hrs every night... so really don't understand why he's ready to go down at 9.30am for a big sleep! He's walking but we don't do much in the morning, spend most of the time getting ready and doing a few chores. He also has quiet time reading books.

goes to bed at 7pm / 7.30pm, wakes up anywhere between 6.30am - 7am.

hmmm...that's a lot of sleep, maybe needs it though.

One thing with my DD, who is a similiar age, she does have a tired spell yawny spell around 9 ish, I just get her into something busy (we got out and do something full on most mornings) and put food into her, and that gets her through it .

Do you think you could stretch him out a bit longer before his morning nap? Get out of the house for a playdate or something so that he's not looking for his bed so early. Then you could gradually move that big morning sleep towards the middle of the day and that way your DS may go longer in the afternoon and cut down to one nap that way. Even if it means early tea and 6ish bed time for a while, he will get used to it. That's how we switched to one nap, it wasn't overnight but took about 2 months all up. My son was sleeping 13hrs at night and 2 two hour naps/day before that too. Now he does one big 3hr nap in the middle of the day :)
