| I installed the my radian in my car yesterday and took it into plunket to check, and they said that wrapping the tether connector around the seat leg is illegal in NZ (even though its following the manual), you need to get the bolt installed instead. |

Hmmmm... We have the radian installed like that and it seems perfectly safe.
Being a bit peeved off by Plunket recently I'm inclined to say they're a bit uptight but if it's true and you can get fined for it or you feel it's unsafe it might be worth investigating. |

I just had a chat to the carseat lady this morning and she said the law is it must be installed as per manufacturers guidelines BUT that the cops are not familiar with each seat so to keep the manual in your glovebox if its something a bit unusual then you can whip it out and show them if need be  ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I would go with what the manufacturer has said too - especially since the Radian is so new in NZ, I doubt many Plunket people know much about it.
If you are worried about getting fined, but don't want to get a tether bolt, the Radian does not require tethering whilst RFing to be safe, so you could just fold the tether strap up and tuck it back into its hidey hole on the back of the seat - that way everyone wins! |

I have mine attached to the leg of the front seat, like you, and I feel comfortable with it tethered rather than not tethered.
I will be carrying the manual around in the car now though, just incase anyone picks me up on it! And I agree, you should install it as the manual says, don't worry about plunket. -------------

Plunket tried to tell me my carseat didn't even exist in NZ (I have a brio zento)!! The baby on the move people said that if anyone argues with me, have their phone number on hand & the seat manual .
I educated the local plunket carseat people on ERF seats, that's for sure! |

Yeah Bowie I recommend doing it yourself  took my carseat to Plunket to get them to put it back in after our warrant just after DD turned one, and they put it in forward facing even though I said we were going to keep her rear facing - the lady even said "they should be forward facing once they turn one"

just goes to show how unedeucated some plunket nurse are when it comes to carseats. I woul have said that 12 months is the bare minimum that they should be turned t it does not mean you have to turn them then. I have my sons plunket appointmet when is about 14/15 months be interesting to see if they bring up the carseat thing then. TOTALLY a threadjack but it seemed silly to start a whole new thread for this....
aside from plunket, who can do car-seat checks? And baby on the move (thanks Kalimirella) as there is not one locally. We don't have any of the big baby stores, actually - just pumpkin patch and farmers. We have a VTNZ though - do they check? I installed mine today with great difficulty, and i think its right but the tether strap is probably about 2 inches too short for my big station wagon and i think it *might* be pulling the carseat up a little bit, though i can't be sure....i do know that its got no movement in it at all, can't even lift the corner half a cm to move the carseat cover around so i can't be too wrong, surely! |

bowie- you say your strap is too long, are you putting it over the car seat into the back? I ask cause my strap can extend out a really long way and fits in our ute fine. We have ours attatched behind the front seat, we got a bolt installed as we cant put it around the front seat car rail. -------------

| Yup, over the carseat into the back. I thought about going to the front with it but the instructions say really blatently that it must go to the back and not fall in any cracks in the seats etc etc. Though now thos damn tether straps will have to be negotiated when i put bubs in and out. Its a convertible though so at some point it'll flip around and be a lot easier so its not all bad news! |

Oh do you not have a Radian? I think you can get extension straps from somewhere, tho I have no idea where that might be. I really dont get the whole strap over the car seat thing, it seems rather odd to me. With the radian you can put it straight down onto the car floor rather than over the seat. -------------
