Just curious. I've recommended (on here and IRL) medication for heartburn/indigestion. But it seems lots of people are reluctant to go that route. Can anyone explain to me why? I've read that losec isn't known to be 100% safe and probably wouldn't take that myself, but everything I've read about ranitidine says it's safe. Is it just not wanting to take meds to be extra safe or is there something I'm missing??
I am on ranitidine now and it's absolutely amazing for preventing heartburn, and I did a lot of reading (on the net) and talking to midwife about it before going on it, but if there's a safety issue that I'm missing I want to know! Thanks  ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I took rantidine and wouldn't hesitate to take it again...it was worth it for the sleep. I too would be interested in reasons for not taking it?

Rachelsea I didn't know for my first pregnancy and suffered through it, slept sitting up etc...so awful! I have the same midwife so I'm not sure why she suggested it this time when she didn't last time - maybe I didn't complain about it enough last time lol. Hmmm, my heartburn seems to be kicking it now too - blah! I managed on Gaviscon liquid the last two times, but it got to needing to sleep more upright towards the end, so will keep this in mind - thanks ladies! ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">

It is so wonderful haha! Man, I went from being so miserable and unable to sleep or waking up in pain in the night to being able to sleep through except for toilet breaks lol. -------------

I was told by Dr that if I can manage it with gaviscon, don't change. Though gaviscon isn't working as well this time, I'm trying to be better with my diet but if it doesn't ease up I'll have to go back to Dr ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

Quickeeze aren't working for me this time either, it's fine while it's in my mouth but as soon as it's gone the heartburn is back  two more weeks till my next MW appointment

Oh, I do remember my mum saying that what can work is to have a drink of water which I scoffed at tee hee, but then tried it when the indigestion was not too bad and it did sometimes work....so worth a try at first maybe? -------------

Sheeesh, my indigestion morphed into heart burn and acid reflux from hell, and I got another 12 weeks to go Could barely eat, barely sleep, losing weight.
Tried ranitidine, nothing, then tried omeprazole. Worked a bit but not enough. Now I'm on pantoprezole and seems to be working better, just can't eat or drink anything after 3pm. Also got titralac and gaviscon to take as often as needed. Bring back morning sickness!!! lol! I've ulcerated my throat from bringing up so much acid, hard to swallow. Yup, omeprazole is losec. pantoprezole is prescription only and doesn't seem to have a common name. But it's a stronger acting proton pump inhibitor. Not as safe in pregnancy but doc was happy as I'm far enough along that bubs is just getting bigger, not really developing any more. Makes me feel bad for taking it but I felt like I was losing the plot after nights of no sleep and sitting upright with feet on the floor. Couldn't even sit up in bed. I feel for people who have GERD and no end in sight!! ------------- ***Elly***

I have found with each pregnancy a different thing worked
With C titralac worked,with Ty it didn't, only gaviscon did and with this one, the only one that works is rantidine ...strange ! -------------

Pantoprazole is also called somac
This type of medication does pass to the baby and the through breastmilk, but studies have not specifically been done to identify issues in pregnancy or in children under 12 They do significantly reduce the symptoms of too much stomach acid - which isnt always a good thing - as it can occasionally be masking a deeper issue There is a department that investigates adverse reactions for all medicines - so the reason these are still deemed safe would be because they have no reports to cause serious concern in a particular group - such as pregnant woman If you can get away with just taking titralac and gavison etc - then do so - but if you cant these are great!!! Nothing is prescribed to preganant or breastfeeding mother if the benefits do not significantly outweigh the risks ------------- http://lilypie.com]

This may sound like a silly question - what's the symptoms for an ulcerated throat? My indigestion started getting really bad about 2 weeks ago. I started getting a cough about 1 week ago. The cough is getting worse and I'm wondering if they're related. Hey IsaacsMum, I have a raw sore throat. Kinda feels like someone has quite literally poured acid down it. A constant dry cough. Painful swallowing. But mainly, when gp went to look at my throat with his instrument thing he could see ulceration right at the back just before it dissapeared lower. Assumes I have more along the oesophagus but won't do the camera-throat thing at this point. Got to put up with it until birth then if it doesn't improve I'll get camera'd. :/ Ick.
Also been put on Rivacol mouth wash to use after each time I bring up acid to try protect my teeth. My glands are swollen on either side of my throat. Think that's about all the symptoms I have  ------------- ***Elly***

Went to the Dr today I'm starting randitadine tomorrow 
Can't remember if she called it class or type, but gaviscon/quickeze etc are class A - all good for pregnant woman studies done etc. randitadine is class B1 - ok for pregnant woman 2nd trimester + only, limited studies losec is class B3 - okish, not known to cause problems with pregnant woman 2nd trimester +, but animal studies at high doses have shown fetal issues. ------------- http://lilypie.com"> http://lilypie.com">

good luck with the new meds IssacsMum! Hopefully it works for you. My pantoprazine seems to be the best of the bunch so far, but still really sicky on it :/ Blah.

I get terrible terrible heartburn, to the point where I am sick now, and just throw up stomach acid. Nothing at all worked (gaviscon, milk, apples etc) and would be set off by ANYTHING. Mum got me some titralac yesterday and its a god send! Works sooooo much better than stupid gaviscon!!! -------------

My mum gave me some good advice too :D Dont drink anything while you are having a meal, and dont lie down within half an hour of your meal. That worked for me for a bit, until the heartburn really started rearing its ugly head! -------------
