Ok so I have this major craving for salt. I am putting salt on everything including thigs that already have salt on it eg ready salted chips and putting more salt on the bag. Now as far as I know (and please if i'm wrong correct me), salt causes high blood pressure. High blood pressure in pregnancy isn't good. I had high blood pressure in my last pregnancy and ended up in hopsital on bed rest. DH has warned me that if I continue the salt thing i'm going to be in hospital pretty soon. This morning I developed quite a bad headache - even sitting here is hurting and I have my glasses on.

Does anyone know of anyway I can combat my craving as I can feel in myself now i'm heading for bad news.

Hmmm sorry Becks I don't know about that one. But a while back I had back leg cramps and I was told to increase my salt intake to make the cramps go away! What have your BP readings been like? If they seem okay, I wouldn't worry.

Given that you're probably only having monthly checks with your m/w at the moment, you might want to call her and see if you can visit her on her next clinic day just for a BP test.

the other thing salt does, is make you retain water.. if you have lots of salt in your system, it keeps water there too, hence if it goes out into your tissues.. water follows and voila.. swelling. (sciencey stuff)
In saying that, if you are eating a heap and it is circulating in your blood stream it could make you mega dehydrated everywhere else... I guess, cut out the extra salt.. add more water to dilute the stuff you do eat so it doesn't pull water from elsewhere.. and ask your midwife about it.. maybe get her to check your bloods or something to see if you are lacking in anything.. if you have a major major craving soemtimes it can be the body's way of compensating for something it's lacking in.

Am wondering how you can stop the salt.. is there any way.. and i know this sounds dumb cos when i craved salty stuff i had to have it.. (didn't add extra though) how about things that taste salty/savoury, but aren't overloaded with it, things with strong flavours.. I tended to go for rice crackers instead of chips, or have savoury muffins.. (your probably laughing.. cos it didn't do much to stop the craving. ) either that or i went for sweet instead.. not creamy chocy crap but things like i got into the habit of having a big bottle of chocy milk every morning at ucol. see if there is anything, that stops the craving without the salt.. go the complete opposite and see if that does the trick.

good luck.

If you want an alternative to salt to flavour your foods you could take a trip to your local health food shop. There are things you can buy like Nori(sp) flakes (which are seaweed) and other seasoning type things that give that savoury taste but aren't salt.
Good luck!

i second trying milk - that has been my saviour - and what about some bananas and fresh summer fruit....i found that having nectarines last night (three at none pm!!!) took away any other cravings...
too much salt def wont be good for you - make sure you are drinking plenty too as salt will make you very thirsty...often for the wrong things...pregnant or not...

Hmmm - I'm not going to be much good but I have to agree with Janine - too much salt makes you retain water. I was suffering with swolen feet until I upped my water intake and cut down on the salt.
I have found that having spicy foods or sour eg pickles helps my cravings but then I have not really had mega salty cravings either.
