Hi there ladies, I am breast feeding and was told 2 wake Jaxon up 4 hrs after his last feed started. I hated waking him up as he wouldnt feed properly adn would just fall asleep at the breast then wake then would take hours to get back to sleep. I today started demand feeding in which has worked so much better so far. he just seems to wake a little more often sucking at his hands etc. It is so much easier to get him to sleep again afterwards. What do you ladies find easy? Do u let him fall asleep at the breast?? I know its not right but it seems to be the only way to get him to bed again.

Ethan usually falls asleep when I fed him and then I burp him or change him to try and wake him up slightly then I see if he wants more. If not he usually falls straigh asleep when I put him in his bed. I don't see any problems with letting him fall asleep at the breat but I have been told that every now and then you need to put them to bed awake so they learn to settle themselves and put themselves to sleep.

i always let mikey fall asleep at the breast. i think maybe every now and again try to put him into bed while he's a bit awake so he gets used to falling asleep by himself. i always demand fed as well, i didn't see the sense in waking him up to feed, i figured if he was hungry he'd wake up by himself. ------------- |

The trick with waking them up for routine feeding is to let them think they've woken up themselves! I used to go in and open the curtains, unwrap Hannah and then leave her to wake up naturally herself - would take about 10 mins then she would be fully awake and feed well. I always gave her feeds when she woke up, not before bed, so she has always gone to bed awake. But like the others have said, just do what is best for the two of you - and when they are still little the best is usually the easiest!! ------------- Aimee Hannah 22/10/05 Greer 11/02/08 |

| I only started waking Jack for his day feeds when he was sleeping better during the night than day. If demand is working for you guys I say stick with it. One of my favourite things is Jack sleeping at the breast it makes me feel so close to him so don't stop it if you guys are fine with it. |

| You know everyone says that you should always put them to bed asleep, and we always did that with our boys and they are fantastic sleepers BUT I read in the paper the other day that "studies" have shown, babies who are put to bed asleep are more well-adjusted. |

Kellverona if you find it easier to demand feed & if it works better to let him go to sleep on the boob then no big deal. I'm still demand feeding, still letting my boy fall asleep on the boob most of the time & he is still usually sleeping all night which he has done since he was 6 weeks old.
Demand feeding works for some where as scheduled feeding works for other, just depends on your baby as well as you. Hehe I've never been organised enough to schedule feeds! ------------- Mum to Alex (11), Blaire (10) & Erika (8) and Damien (6) Successful HWB VBA2Cs! Soon to be surrogate |

Yep I feed on demand too. I always let Hannah fall asleep on the breast with the intention that by 6mos I would pull her off at the half-asleep stage and put her into bed so she would get used to going to sleep by herself.
Then Briona came along with reflux and did NOT want to feed before sleeping. I say letting them fall asleep there is a whole lot easier, and it is really good for knowing when they are tired etc. -------------  |
