Depends on how many stops you make. Around 7-8 hours.

All day! Umm... we leave invercargill around 9am and get to chch around 5pm I think. That was with a 2 month old and very rough guess.

Thanks for that - think we will split it over 2 day, maybe 4 hours each day. Half way point Dunedin??

Lol, now I think about it, we did it in 2 parts as well. Hmm must have taken a lot longer. no idea how long though.

Dunedin is a good stopping point, but it's not half way, more like 2/3 to 1/3 I think

Um...sorry very seasoned traveller here...but in all honesty it is WAY WAY easier to get it all over and done with in one day...they sleep alot of the way and I find if I break my trip up (even the blen - invers ones - I do chch - invers alot too) the kids are ratty form the get go on day two cos they know that they are set for another long go inthe car seat.
I do Blen to invers heaps (11 or 12 hour trip) It takes about 7 or 8 hours with stops. Dunners is only 2 and a bit hours from invers so not really a half way point..thats more likey oamaru, I'd say..Good luck!!

I was going to say the same thing. Esp if your kids will sleep in the car then power onwards.

Yup depends how many stops! We drove from Chch at 7am down to Dunedin and got there at 6pm... Although we stopped half a dozen times to feed the wee one and there was 7 of us in the car so had to stop for toilet breaks too! We spent about 2 hours in Timaru though. Coming back it only took us 5 hours and family down in Dunedin said it wasn't a long drive to Invercargill.

I'd go with the 7hours too. Make sure you turn off at Clinton and cut Gore off-it's a good half an hour faster!

What are you coming to Invercargill for

Want to take my boys down to see Great Grandma!
Do you recommend travelling along the coast, or inland?

Coast- the inland route seems way longer cos theres nothing to break up the travel. The coast has more towns which makes it seem faster. I've travelled both routes HEAPS of times

If you get bored with great grandma feel free to stop past our place (We live in Invercargill)

Good thread....... we will be heading down that way in a few months as I'm from Gore originally so think we should prob head down there so my aunties and uncles etc can meet DD. I've travelled CHCH to Gore dozens of times and it is way easier to do it in one go. Takes me 6hrs to Gore and then it's about 45mins to Invers if I remember rightly. But that was before having DD but she normally sleeps in the car so think we'd prob only need to stop once or twice at the most. I'd definitely recommend just getting it over and done with in one hit.

We are all organised to go in mid April. Going to do it all in one day as suggested, leaving really early (like 6am), drive til about 10am, have a 2 hour break and then do the last 2 - 3 hours in one go.
Shouldn't be too bad - going to invest in a portable DVD player for the journey!

This is a must!

I do Welly - Hamilton on a semi regular basis. I have to practically bribe the girls (3yo twins) out of the car so I can get coffee and toilet breaks!
