Has anyone used Losec for their babies with reflux? I am umming and ahhing about giving it really. I have the bottle of it here and have tried to give it to Blake but he just gagged and gagged and screwed up his face. It was a nightmare. I have read a few stories about it and I am just not sure. I have been ussing Gaviscon and wonder if it is just best to perservere with that and infacol????? and try mix it with breastmilk (as he wont have that gavicon in water now either)

Would love some advice - suggestions?

If he has reflux does this mean he will have it for ages???

How long were u on Gav for? It took ella a bit to be improved on it.

Really its upto you if u want to perservere on the gav go for it just burp him bout every 50mls (guessing will have to do coz ur breast feeding) and give him the infacol before u feed him bout 4 drops.

Reflux can last till they are on solids, sitting or even till they are over one it just really depends on the baby.

Jacks reflux has just gone now. But its been fine for ages when he had his medicine. He is bf 2 and was on zantac. Its not the nicest tasting but he got used to it and knew it came before milk so he ended up liking it.

Reflux can last a looong time. my daughter is 14 months and has just had another really bad bout with it, we are on a very high dose of losec as well as another drug (not worth telling you about till you get to that stage).

You might find the losec suspension doesnt work but the capsules do, - we've always used the capsules , just spilt open with a bit of pear or just on a spoon (Laur has been on it since 6-7 weeks old). What exactly is making you hmm and hah about it?

Often reflux dissapears or reduces when they can sit up/move around by themselves or when they hit solids.

www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz has some good information and stories etc on it.

Do I give Blake some pear? He is only six weeks???? isnt that bad for little tums? The capsule thing seems a better idea?

I just feel weird giving little babies these drugs but I am beginning to get so tired from the crying and seeing him in so much pain I am starting to think this is going to be the best option.

Laura started hers at 4 or 5 weeks I think it was we were told to give it in a teaspoon of pear because the acid in the pear is just strong enough to activate it.
TO be honest.. I hardly ever did it that way, I used to just give her the granules (whats inside the capsule) on a teaspoon and wash it down with her milk straight away - as her acid levels seemed to be just fine to activate it thanks.
We chose to go the med route because it was better than seeing this lil helpless person in pain and not coping etc. and we were so tired as was she. It made a huge difference, part of her reflux issues were compounded by a dairy allergy.
In the end its your choice but it has been a huge lifesaver for us.. (eventhough we've had somee bad phases and have gone up to a different med in conjunction.. thats got nothing to do with the losec itself or any side effects).
Alot of people swear by Osteopaths for their lil ones reflux it didnt really do much for us but its another option to look into maybe
The website I gave you somewhere has a phone number for the gastric reflux support people who might be able to help there are also coffee groups etc too with parents who know what ya going through etc.

Yep go for the granuals, Much much easier than in suspension form. Im going to contradict what Karysta said and urge you to give it with pear as this makes it work better and to wait at least 10 minutes before giving bubs a feed as the milk makes it not work as well.

Definately go to www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz as there is heaps of info there or on the gastric reflux board on www.everybody.co.nz. There should be a coffee group in your area. Im the convener here in northland.

Reflux sux. Jayde has been off her meds since she was 12 months old but still gets flare ups when she is sick.

Angel is right it is better to give it to them in pear, but as for us it was easier not too.. (pear was a reflux fruit for laura)
To some extent you have to follow your own instincts :)
But the links quoted have been very helpful to me

Thankyou..I have started him with the pear and little granules. He seems to take it easy. I have tried giving it to him before a feed but he throws up. So giving it after. about half hour or so.

Can anyone suggest where I could find out about Osteopaths???

Ask your midwife she should be able to reccommend a good one that does baby cranial massage.
