Hi, my 8month old daughter has decided that she no longer wants to eat off a sponn. finding it very hard to think of things to feed her...toast, pasta, fruit etc but im concerned about the lack of iron she will be getting. any ideas on what iron rich foods i could give her to eat herself?

The Only Organic baby rice crackers are iron fortified but I dunno how many she'd need to eat for it to be beneficial.

At six months Jacob was having a good old chew on a steak He didn't *eat* much per se, but it was so grey and dry when he finished, he must have got a lot of juice.

You could give him some mince and let him have a go with his fingers? It would make a mess, but babies tend to anyway!

Jacob (also almost eight months) also inhales raw salmon off sushi - I know fish won't have as much iron as red meat, but it might be worth a shot (and Jacob has a lot of fun with it, I think he likes the texture)

I really wouldn't worry about it, though. Some people do 'baby-led-weaning' which means they don't use puree and if they do use spoons, they pre-load them and give them to the baby to put in their mouths, and their babies do just fine. I'm sure she'll get what she needs.

BLW doesn't bother with spoons and lets them feed themselves, you could try making homemade burgers with mince and letting her feed herself.

Or strips of beef, lamb and chicken she can suck on them and get the juices which is where all the goodness is anyway.

I would just carry on as usual...make a game of it, you know like beep beep here come the truck etc & have a look around for cute spoons, I got a couple the shape of a plane & while I feed DS with it he had one he held onto & played with & dipped in food.

I never did BLW, did not know about it, but had no problem with them using their hands.

Aria Farms lamb and beef strips are fantastic for kids finger foods.

I had this trouble too and tried everything, I found that if you do puree and use a babyrusk as a spoon for a couple of feeds they'll eventually get the hang of it and go back to the spoon.

Thanks so much for your feedback, my aunt worked for a meat making factory in England and told me that she feed her kids Aria Farm meat strips as they were all meat (none of the yuck extras) said her kids loved them. will give them a go. Miss is not yet interested in using a fork just her hands, i guess its also good for her hand eye co-ordination. I hired a book on baby led weaning so we will see what that has to say also.
fingers crossed tried the spoon again this morning but she didnt even look at it gets so frustrating sometimes, but got to do what we got to do

Meatballs! I also gave DS skinless frankfurters. He really liked the ones with cheese in them.
