My little one was born with a few thumb abnormalities and has to have corrective surgery so that she is able to bend her thumbs properly (some tendons removed from middle fingers placed into thumb and thumbs put at correct angle).

Before we go to our next appt I was wondering if anyone else has been through corrective surgery with their little ones?
...and what do you think would be the best age to do this is? They want to do it all at the age of 1, but I know at that age they are still going through so much, and I don't want her to miss out on any developmental milestones.

I haven't personally gone through this with my own child but have worked with a number of babies in an orphanage who have had surgery. With hands they tended to wait till 18months as the hands are then a decent size to work on by that stage. They were keen to get it done as early as possible so that the child learns to use the hands properly and also so that it was less trauma to them.
Best of luck with you wee girl. Hope that you get a good team of surgeons who are not just good at surgery but also at communicating with you.

Best is to speak to the surgeons. I havent had to get my kids to have corrective surgery but I was born with a left club foot. It wasnt picked up on the 3 scans my Mom had so was a bit of a big surprise. I was in for my first op before I was a day old. I had another one before my Dad said enough is enough now.

He went with a second opinion (I dont know all the reasons why) but the second surgeon was very unhappy with the work that was done and felt it was rushed a bit and wasnt done correctly. (and this was private healthcare in South Africa and second opinion was with government dr but he was a specialist in his field and all over the world)

Lots of surgeries through childhood and a lot could have been avoided if the first two ops werent done.

So not to scare you here (I am perfectly fine. So fine that I am one of the two people that got places in the World Comp for Tae Kwon Do for the first time for SA. I lost my one point to my teammate). My only advice is ask lots of questions from the Drs. If you dont know the reasons then ask why this age. What is better to wait or do it now. If need be ask another surgeon. Research the Dr's you have at the moment and what other Dr's there is in the field.

And ask ask ask questions. They might even know of a group of moms with kids with same issues that you can chat to about any other concerns.

Good luck.
