I called the doctors yesterday to get my blood test results but they weren't all back. The nurse only told me that I had a low white blood count. Of course I googled it and am now a little panicked. Can anyone tell me if this is common or there are some non serious reasons this could be?

I had a low white blood cell count when I was diagnosed with gallstones (not saying you have gallstones) but doc said it was normal for your white blood cells to be lower when your body was fighting something.

What was your WBC count?

The lab has different reference ranges for nonpregnant and pregnant ladies. So if your blood were labelled pregnant then the WBC reference range would be higher (as it increases in pregnancy), but as you are only just pregnant your WBC may not have increased by much yet therefore it would look like you had low levels but really they are within the non pregnant range. Does that make sense??

Don't know, she didn't give me any specifics, so just enough to freak me out and not enough information to be informative.

They were antenatal bloods being done so I assume they would have been checked against me being pregnant maybe?

Is the white blood count to do with the platelets? Im pretty sure its quite common if your pregnant to have low platelets. Try and not worry, and maybe ring back and ask to be more informed of what this means.

WBC and platelets are cells that are in your blood, WBC fight infection etc, Plt are to do with clotting.

Guest... a lot of the time a nurse will just see a L next to a results (meaning lower than reference range) and will not actually look at what the result is. If you are worried give your dr a call and ask them to explain it to you.

Thanks Kicker, I called again and it seems things are ok. The nurse told me she didn't see anything untoward and that the doctor would call if they saw any problems :)

Hey Guest, I had the same and they said perhaps my body was fighting an infection and asked me if I was feeling well - I was apart from a sore throat.  I didn't look into it any further.
