Just wondering if any of you lovely ladies that use Otago Fertility can tell me who you go to?

Wayne Gillet or
Barbara Richards.

Ive just been on the phone with both places, it looks as though I wont be getting an appointment until august with either specialist.

They want my Dr to send through my info for a private consult but now I have to decide which one to get the info sent too.
I guess at the end of the day its all the same but would like to hear any experience you have had, good and bad.

Thanks in adavance

Hey there CS, as you kow i go through Dr Barbara Richards, i contacted wayne gillet when i thought this next appt wasn't going to happen till august, but he didn't in the slitest bit seem interested, i just got brushed off. I'm sure there are people that use him and think he is great, but I think barbara has done a good job so far with DH and I that i wouldn't change!

Hope you get your appt soon!

Hi Curlysue, I was with Barbara Richards and found her very good. We went with the public system and had 2 round of IVF.

I vaguely remember the nurses telling us that one of the Drs was going to be away in August and or september. So there may be a wait. Good luck. I know going via public, it felt like we were always waiting, but when we were on course for treatment we were looked after really well.

Hi Curlysue, I am with Wayne and so far I have been happy with him, he explains things in depth, has a positive attitude and was incredibly kind when giving me bad news after my lap (stage 3 endo). Other medical staff I have talked to spoke very highly of him as well.

Wow Rosie 8 weeks already, hope you are feeling well :)
Its Barbara thats going away, shes away during July and then again in Ausgust.
I thought that we would be able to see her in queenstown since its no different travelling there or dunedin but was told by the receptionist that no, queenstown is only for queenstown residents grrrrrr.

Yay Lala a wayne client lol, good to hear you have good things to say about him, that makes me feel slightly better . Heres hoping my Dr sorts my stuff and gets it through asap so they can call me with an appointment. I think we are going to go private but will wait and see what our plan of attack is and what we are and are not entitled to.

Hi Curlysue, the other good thing about Wayne is that my DP liked him too - being a bit of a southern man I'm not sure DP would have felt comfortable with a woman doctor!
Not sure where you are at in your journey but we are so happy we chose to go private for our first appointment - best $160 we ever spent - it reduced our waiting time for public investigations and helped reduce the frustrations of not having a plan in place! I am off to see Wayne tomorrow to discuss IVF - public vs private. Still can't quite get me head around the fact that we need IVF but guess that is just the cards we have been dealt...
I would love to hear experiences from anyone who lived in Invercargill and had IVF in Dunedin - how many times did you have to go to Dunedin during the IVF cycle, did you stay the night etc? And did you have to go to your GP at all during the cycle (we have just moved here so still using our old GP 2 hours away!)... any info appreciated!

Posted By: rosiefarmer
Date Posted: 26 May 2011 at 1:19pm
lala - our last cycle we had to go up to pick up drugs, 2 scans, egg collection, and transfer, (would of gone up for scan @ 7 weeks, but have been having problems and ended up going to Que) we usually left early in the morning as our appointments were usually around 9 am, I would of liked to stay the night before, but DH is a hard man to get to stay away from home.

I never had to go to GP during a cycle. But had to go to Invercargill for blood test, I live 40 mins out of Invercargill, and they always had to be early in the morning too.

Curlysue - I had Barbara but I have heard good things about Wayne and to be honest I've had a couple of dealings with him myself and he was very good. Barbara can be good but I've also found her a bit one-size-fits all in her approach and I don't always feel like she has your best interests at heart - I think they both have been doing it for so long that they get a bit jaded like in any profession.
that is very odd about Queenstown - I have seen her privately through clinics in Dunedin, Queenstown and Wanaka and it hasn't mattered where we were living at the time. (for example I have done QT and Wanaka clinics when living in Southland and also a QT clinic when living in wanaka if it meant I could get in earlier).

Date Posted: 26 May 2011 at 6:12pm
CS I had the same sort of run in with Barbara's receptionist before I decided to just go up to ChCh. I had emailed Barbara directly about the possibility of seeing her in her Wanaka clinic if it meant i could get an ealier appt,a dn she said to talk to her receptionist about it. So i rung her and she was like - no, wanaka appts are for wanaka residents only blah blah. So then I emailed Barbara back and said thanks for her help with everything but the receptionist said I could not have an appt. I just left it at that, and then later in the week, a couple of days after I got back from my ChCh appt, I got this email from the receptionist saying that I was booked in with Barbara at the Wanaka Clinic in July. So i figure Barbara told her to sort it out and give me an appt since there was one open. I jsut think the receptionist is a bit of a @#$@#. But thats just my experience...

Posted By: mountaingirl
Date Posted: 26 May 2011 at 9:38pm
Hun - I completely agree - the receptionist is a complete B#@%h and has the worst patient manner - probably not the best to be dealing with people in fragile emotional states!!

Thank you all for you post, Im definately happy with my decision to go with Wayne now. I was worned by a friend who I havent seen in ages to watch Barbaras receptionist, so I was prepared but still found her rude, atleast Mary was understanding, patient and really helpful .

Now I just have to make sure my Dr has sent my info through, I really want to get the ball rolling on this, I have a day off tomorrow so might pester the nurse again to check up on the progress

Hi there, We had Wayne and he was fantastic.
Barbara did our first transfer, which didn't work, but when Wayne did our second transfer it was a much nicer experience than the first time. He was so lovely and made you feel really good about it and who knows, maybe all those good feelings helped because it worked!!! (still can't believe it some times )

Hi CS just thought I would say that I have been through both Barbara and Wayne and found them both to be very good although ultimately you will end up dealing with the nurses through most of the treatments and they are all amazing.Barbara is a bit black and white in her approach and Wayne is more of a teddybear. Good luck and just remember that whoever you go to see their end goal is the same

Hi, this is my first post on one of these chat websites. I moved to Queenstown from Auckland earlier this year so no longer have all the fertility treatments on my door step. As of yesterday I'm on the waiting list for IVF which is done in Dunedin. Is anyone else on this website going through this process at the moment?

Hi Rochelle. I'm in Dunedin but on the waiting list for IVF, I'm getting it in November. When is yours?

Hope your journey is fast

Hi, I'm still waiting to hear when we'll be able to have the IVF, if there's a cancellation it'll be this year otherwise we may have to wait until March. Will this be your first try with IVF?

Posted By: Tulip2
Date Posted: 16 August 2013 at 7:52pm
Hi, Will your IVF be publically funded? We don't meet the criteria so have to pay. Such a lot of money, I saw that Fertility Associates have an option where you pay lump sum $26,000 for 3 IVF's and if none are successful they'll refund 70%. Might be worth thinking about.

Posted By: epictraveller
Date Posted: 16 August 2013 at 9:20pm
Hi Tulip, are you the same as Rochelle or is this two people?! My IVF is publically funded and yes, it's our first go. Are FA in Queenstown? If you're paying it could well be worth it? Maybe have a chat to OFS and see what they can offer like that? You may well find you move up the list, we moved up three weeks!

Hi Rochelle! I live in Wanaka and i am also through Barbara in Dunedin! It is so frustrating being so far away! I am on second round of clomid and planning IUI.. but so hard to work out timing being so far away! I am on the public list for IVF, but don't have enough points yet as i need a lap..ughh sigh..jumping through hoops! Love to talk to some ladies in the same situation :)

Hi, snowbaby. The long drive to Dunedin isn't easy. Have now tried 3 cycles of clomid, next week we're trying IUI in Dunedin and if that doesn't work we're booked in for IVF in December. Unfortunately we don't have enough points for public funding either so have to pay the approx $12,000 ourselves. ouch!

Im nervous and excited about it. Keen to get scanned and see what is going on with my ovaries, stupid PCOS messing them up. Who are you with? We will do a second IUI next cycle (unless it works!) then see Barbara to discuss IVF for next year. Think we will try IUI a few times before IVF though.

Posted By: Tulip2
Date Posted: 21 September 2013 at 10:27am
I'm also with Barbara. I have low AMH level so running out of time. Barbara thinks IVF is our best option but we thought we'd try one IUI first.

Posted By: Icecream
Date Posted: 23 September 2013 at 5:48pm
Thought I would post this in here too
Had my scan today, lovely lady and nice to see on screen what is going on. Endometrium thickness is 9mm - need to google if that is good for cd12.
Right follicles - 1 x 11mm, 3 x 4mm
Left follicles - 1 x 19mm, 1 x 8mm, 3 x 4mm
Also did swab, blood test and got consent form
Kinda excited now, off for more bloods in the morning, I think I will ovulate on cd14 like the last few times.
I asked about bding and was told to hold off?? Less pressure on dh which is good but I do worry. I have read about back to back IUIs - do they do that here?

Posted By: Tulip2
Date Posted: 23 September 2013 at 7:44pm
Hi Icecream, that's great that you have so many follicles and two that are dominant. I had my scan today too, 2 follicles on each side of good size. The nurse asked me to do a clear plan test this afternoon which was positive for LH surge so she wants us in Dunedin Hospital tomorrow morning for IUI. I don't see why they wouldn't do back to back IUI's, hopefully you won't need any more.

Posted By: Icecream
Date Posted: 24 September 2013 at 6:34pm
How did you get on tulip?

AFM got bloods done this morning and phoned at 10 and nurse said surge was good and all go for tomorrow 10 for dh and noon for me. Got a phone call about 10mins later and nurse said actually it might be best to go today DH at 130 and me at 330. So all done! DH sample was good, nurse said whilst doing it that I had fertile mucus (nice to know!)
Got a blood test for 2 weeks time - eeekkkk
Nice to have someone to share the journey with

Hi everyone...I thought I would post in here as well as iui. I'm also under OFS. We have been trying for number two for 3 years...I no longer respond to ivf meds as amh is low.. 0.7 18 months ago ( I'm only 37) . We are now trying clomid and iui....... Fingers crossed for this week. Just had first scan with 3 leading follicles but it looks like I might be ovulating over the weekend...that's not so flash.

Anyway...good luck everyone x

Posted By: Icecream
Date Posted: 01 October 2013 at 3:18pm
Great news about follies - are you getting daily bloods done to pick up LH surge? You might be lucky for Friday maybe.
It is pants about timing but also nice that it is a small clinic

Posted By: Phoofy
Date Posted: 01 October 2013 at 7:43pm
Yes...start bloods tomorrow. My biggest follie is currently 13 mm so they think it will be 17 by Thursday in which case if my eostrodal is high enough they could trigger me Thursday and have the iui on Friday. I just feel sorry for those other 2 follicles that will be left behind. I think if they left me I would probably ovulate on Sunday evening. Last time on my day 12 scan I had 2 follies size 19mm, I got my surge on day 13 and ovulated on the afternoon/evening of day 14. It's so frustrating.... I'm really hoping that they will offer to come in over the wknd for me and do an iui but I don't think that's going to happen.
How are you holding out? How many days post iui are you?

Posted By: Tulip2
Date Posted: 02 October 2013 at 8:32am
Hi Icecream, sorry for late reply. My IUI went well same day as yours. Staff at Dunedin hospital fertility dept were really nice. Now we wait. I have no pregnancy symptoms at all yet, although I'm not sure how early they're suppose to start. Blood test on the 7th to see if it's worked. When do you have your blood test?

Posted By: Icecream
Date Posted: 02 October 2013 at 10:39pm
Oh I have mine the 8th - my iui was at 4pm though.

Trying not to symptom spot as I could have a load if I thought about it. Temp going good so just have to pray this is the one!!

Will you be testing at home beforehand?

Posted By: Tulip2
Date Posted: 04 October 2013 at 7:28pm
Hi, no I wasn't going to test at home I thought the blood test showed results sooner than home tests can? Probably a good idea not to pregnancy symptom spot.

How are you feeling today?

Hi Icecream and others. I'm sorry Icecream to hear that the IUI didn't work. I had my blood test on Monday but had to wait until Tuesday for results. I phoned the nurse and my HCG blood test level is 11 which is inconclusive so I now have to do another blood test on Friday and wait until Saturday for the results. I'm day 27/28 of my cycle and having usual cramps etc so not sure what's going on and trying hard not to get my hopes up. Are you trying another IUI next cycle Icecream?

Thanks Phoofy and Icecream. It's been a LONG week of waiting. I should be day 1 or 2 by now and so far no sign of it. Trying not to get my hopes up though. Had the 2nd blood test this morning. The OFS nurse said that they don't get the results until about 7pm probably because I'm in Queenstown, luckily someone will be there tomorrow (Saturday) so I can phone for my hcg result. Might do a home test in the morning too.

Hi ladies. Yah I'm pregnant. Positive home test this morning then had to wait until midday for nurse to call and my hcg level had gone from 11 to 160.    Hard to believe it's true.   I have a low AMH 1.4 so my chances with IUI were slim. If it worked for me it can work for you too.

I'm still waiting for my sore boobs to turn up as per usual on about 3-5 dpo for the past 7 months but they are not in the slightest bit tender. Trying not to over analyse as I know the chances are slim with low amh .7 - 1.3 19 months ago and only 2.5 mil swimmers.

Hi Phoofy, Feeling ok thanks, starting to get my head around all the things I shouldn't eat. It's hard not to over analyse things when you want a baby soo much.

Hi, unfortunately I have bad news about my IUI. I had another hcg test and my levels dropped from 160 to 120, it should have gone up to about 640. Not sure what I do now, the original plan was to try one IUI then if it didn't work do IVF in December but seem as the IUI worked initially I wonder whether I should wait on IVF and try another IUI??

Oh no Tulip, I am so sorry!! I'd be guided by your specialist, what do they think? If you're booked in for IVF anyway, maybe just try another one in the meantime but go ahead with IVF?

Tulip...I'm so so sorry. That's so crap! I really feel for you.
I know it won't be any consolation to you but my iui hasn't worked. Hmmm are you having to Pay for ivf?

Oh tulip I am so sorry to hear that - you gave me hope.

I would take to specialist too

If you time another iui why not give it a try less invasive than ivf

Hi, sorry that your IUI didn't work Phoofy. I emailed Barbara and she replied straight away suggesting that I put off IVF and give IUI another go. We've been trying for 2 years and that was the first time getting a positive pregnancy test so I guess that's something. Thanks for your support. What's the latest with you Icecream?

Thanks epic - will read that later

I finished my fifth set of clomid yesterday and am booked in for a scan on Tuesday. Got an appointment on the 5th and going to ask about a lap. We briefly mentioned it last time but thought we would try clomid and iui first - really should of just gone on the list

So sorry again tulip - good that Barbara got back to you so quick and you have a text step
Keep us posted - hugs

Well it's a definite negative today confirmed by the bt. So depressing, even though I was expecting it there is always a glimmer of hope. I'm going to continue with the progesterone pessaries for a couple of days to try and put off AF so I don't ovulate over the weekend again. It was such a hard decision whether to use the trigger or not as I really felt I ovulated before the follies were ready but I didn't want to risk it and ovulate on the Sunday when they don't do iui.

Scans are always a bit exciting and nerve wracking I find. Let us know how you get on ic

Thanks for link epic... I have saved it and will read it later.

Fingers crossed for next iui tulip...we might be doing it at the same time....haha quite literally

Have a great weekend girls

Sorry for the bad news for both of you guys. Onwards and upwards with the next IUI right?

Icecream you could be going for your appointment the same day I'm in for egg collection!

So I start injections this Friday, can't remember if I told you about the education session, was a bit freaky but very glad DH was there so the nurse just talked to him about how to do it all. Can't believe it's all starting so soon!! Last pill is Wednesday morning, one day off everything, then into the drugs. Getting excited! (But also scared...)

Hi lovely ladies

Epic - hope it is all going well

Phoofy sorry for af but good to get into another cycle too

AFM
Scan on tue showed nice follies - queen being 17mm (CD 11)
Bloods tue, wed, today at 8am and again at 3.30.
Ended up taking a trigger shot home and nurse confirmed I was best to take it so did at 6.45pm
Scheduled in tomorrow at 11.30
Had the day booked off anyway for an extra long weekend so all work out well just need it to work!

Wow IC..... 9 follies... That's amazing. I only ovulate one side at a time so last month I had 4 on my left , and previous month I had 2 on right. This month it will be my right side but scan is on my day 11 and their day 10 as my day 12 is over the weekend so the scan might be too early to tell what's really going on. My period started at 1pm so they count the following day as day 1. I find it a bit strange.....I'd understand it better if it started say at 6pm...

Hope you all have a great weekend

Hi ladies,
How are we all this lovely long weekend?

Tulip - how are you doing?

Feeling very happy about this cycle with timing of iui. I wonder if I really did need the trigger? Can't do the blood test on the Thursday I should as away on a course with two guys from work so will just have to wait till the Saturday and results the Monday. Need to watch hpt due to trigger don't want a false positive.

In with Barbara on the 5th so that is good. Going to ask about lab and discuss what else we can do. DH is completely against IVF so we will likely use our funding next year for more iuis. Need to ask about keeping taking clomid or take a break. Iui timings don't work out again until after Christmas - a break will be good. Just hoping that this cycle is it for us.

How are you each doing?
Hugs

Hi all,
Doing fine thanks, miscarried naturally, I thought it would be painful but it wasn't. We're skipping this cycle and will give IUI another try next month. My low AMH is the reason I'm having trouble getting pregnant, but as they don't know why I miscarried my worry is it'll happen again.

Anyway's enough about me, sorry Phoofy that you didn't get a positive this month. My fingers are crossed for you next time. How are you feeling Epic with the drugs?

Hi Icecream, hope this IUI is the one for you. I had a one month break from clomid before taking it again with last IUI and my scan showed good follies. I wonder if your body gets use to taking it and maybe it starts to not work as well?? will be interesting to see what Barbara's view is on that.

Oh Tulip, I'm sorry. Hope they can work out what's going on with the MC's! I think with clomid you can only take it so long or it affects your lining, hence why you get a few cycles and then they move you on to something else.

I'm doing ok with the drugs, got really emotional/moody yesterday so something must be happening! Really hate the Cetrotide injection, it always gives me a rash! First scan tomorrow

Icecream - how are you getting on?! Are you going to test early? Can you not do blood test Friday morning? If you do it first thing they will get them back to you that day!

I'm wondering that when I had 4 follies last month and then triggered only one was mature enough so maybe the others are still lurking....I don't really know how it works to be honest. I bet your really nervous, it is nerve wracking. You can't really tell anything from pain I've realised as felt it before and there has been only a couple of follies so don't read too much into it. I hope you get some sleep tonight.
How are you feeling ic?
Big hugs to you tulip

Hi ladies
Maybe feeling a bit different but might all be in my head!

I ended up triggering on the Thursday night as I wanted iui on Friday and had it at noon and bd that night too

Have blood test form for Thursday but flying out early to a two day course and not back till late Friday - will test at home Saturday and get bloods taken. Will know by Monday anyway as af due.

Need to prepare list of questions for Barbara on Tuesday

Oh and DH has an interview Monday for a job he really wants so that is a good distraction

Hey ic, Saturday is a long wait.... Is there anyway you could ask the nurses if you can test a day early? Waiting those extra 2 days is a nightmare and it would show up in the blood test by Wednesday.

Bd tonight.... Now to save it up for a couple of nights in the hope that we have good numbers for Monday.

Hey tulip, hope you are doing ok

Might ask on Tuesday and just do bloods last thing - don't want it to be too early and not be clear what is going on, at least I will be distracted
Have lovely weekends

We had a productive day of pulling down a fence.
I've got a wee question....I was given the the clear blue opk to use over the weekend and I got my smily face at 6pm (was negative at )130pm, I m now concerned that doing an iui on Monday morning will be too late. So frustrating that they don't do iui at the weekend. So girls, do you think they will do iui. I'm hoping that they will because if it was a normal day it would have been negative in the blood in the morning them positive tomorrow then iui the following morning. Having a blood test tomorrow to see how high my lh is up to.

Posted By: Tulip2
Date Posted: 02 November 2013 at 9:46pm
Hi Phoofy, Well seem as you only got the smiley tonight I would think you'd be ok for IUI on Monday, suggest doing opk test tomorrow morning and Monday morning as well. (Not that I'm at all qualified to give advice) You're right if it was morning blood tests then tomorrow would be first positive which would then mean Monday for IUI.

I always get a couple of positive opk tests but they are the Internet ones.

As you noted the point about the bloods too.

Even if you did ovulate at some point today you will still be in the window to catch that egg!

But I think the opks pick up lh surge and the is it 12 to 36 hours after the egg is released.

Keep us posted

So bloods today indicated lh of 37. Jill happy with that and iui booked for 12. On those numbers from experience I thought that I would ovulate around tomorrow morning but I getting some pretty strong ovulation pain now that started around 630 tonight. I'm hoping they can stay in there as long as possible. Maybe it's because I had 3 follies an 11, 14, 18 on Friday. Now they should be at 16, 19 and 23. I wonder if I'll pop 2 out? Hoping 12 won't be to late for iui. Last time surge was 31 and I began to ovulate at 3 the following afternoon. Fingers crossed
