Is it usual for daycares to charge for public holidays when they aren't open?
I don't understand how they can charge for a service they aren't providing so wondered if was common practice. Ds starts in couple of weeks so just trying to get it sorted before then.
TIA

Ours doesn't. It should state it in the contract

DD is in fulltime DC and we don't pay. I wouldn't expect to as they are closed so you don't have the option of them attending.

We have to pay, but DS only goes on a Wednesday and Friday so not many public holidays on those days

Ours does too - I guess if they have to pay their staff to be off aswell, it makes a little sense. I'd be more happy paying 50% though, rather than the full price.

Our Kindy charges, (as does the Daycare we were in before this. However where we are now, the girls get X number of 'annual leave' days (9 I think) which can be used on the stat days and when they close over Xmas.

Thanks everyone. I might try and swap my Monday to a Friday if works agrees, less stat days that way

at the end of the day its a business and staff need to be paid, cool to see some dont charge though.

You should get some annual leave (usually charged at 50%) so you can use that on stat days, although keep in mind you will need to apply in advance

Where I work we charge for public holidays, but if the child is part time we try to offer them a make up day which they are not charged for.

Ours charges., it's a kidicorp so I'd say all kidicorp ones would be the same.

depends on the centre, it's always in the contract/fine print - some centers will also offer you 'leave' days for your child - so if you go on holiday there are a certain number of days that you don't have to pay for - however it's really up to the centre - so a good thing to know about in advance

We've never had to but a friends kids were at one that did and her DH refused to pay them since it wasn't his problem they were closed. He said theres no way they could charge him for a service they weren't offering and the courts backed him up.

I pay, yes. In fact putting my son in two mornings a week - I am going to shift from the Monday since so many holidays fall on that day!!!

Our daycare charges and all that ive come across have, stating they have to pay their staff etc.....but I too would prefer to pay 50% on those days.

You find that most daycares are very quiet on a Mon and Fri as parents dont want to have to pay for a service they arent getting since most pub hols are a mon or fri.

If it's 20 hours free they can't.
