Help!, We are heading over to England at xmas with our then 7 month old. Has anyone else tried this massive journey and 3 flights changes with a little one!!!!, any ideas to make the journey smooth, do we keep to feeding times as usual or change to the clocks of where we are going? Help

Emma (maya) has taken her little girl overseas on a longhaul flight. She could help you out. But she is nearly ready to pop her girls out so might taken a bit to get a answer. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

| I've taken my son on a few flights - 3 hours, then 8 hours (6 weeks), 5 hours (8 months), and 8 hours, then 3 hours (1 year). I was also chatting on the plane to a women with two kids who went from - in a couple o days - Norway to NZ. It took 52 hours. She swear by toothbrushes - she said they keep kids occupied for hours. |

Emma - I have a friend who recently travelled from NZ to France (and then from France to California) with a 2 year old and a 5 month old - BY HERSELF! (insane woman)
I'm picking stuff up from her tonight so will ask if she has any extra special tips. |

Sorry I don't have any experience but I would just play feeding by ear, also by then remember s/he will be into solids and snacks as well. The longest flight I've done with a baby was just 4 hours. She was 6 months and was amused most of her wake time with an empty cup lol  -------------  |

Hopefully he will sleep for alot of it.. I would say just keep with NZ time until you arrive at your destination, then slowly adjust him to the new time. The longest flight we've been on with Ella was to Brisbane, which was 3.5 hours. She was 16 months and she did really well, I would say that the younger they are the easier it would be (hopefully!).. as at Ella's age then she was on one sleep and didn't sleep on the plane.

No baby will be able to go in the aeroplane bassinett. I am planning travellign to the Uk when baby will be 4 - 5 months old. Its not that bad really. I have taken a 13 month old to the uk and a almost 2 year old (both at seperate times) I would say the hardest was 13 month old as all she wanted to do is walk round the plane say hi to everyone - shes a social butterfly - 2 year old understood a bit more that he couldn't just run around. time your flight so its night flight so baby will sleep more than not and keep the feed to what you normally would - if every 4 hours feed every 4 hours. If its getting to meal time but not plane meal time the cabin attendants are very helpful and don't mind giving the food to baby ahead of time. (in my experience anyhow)

| Take food with you but make sure to dump it when you get to the airport. also ring the airline about taking baby formula/breast milk. I know they were funny qith it. not aure about now. |

Toys and food. I just did a trip from wellington- akl- LAX- Heathrow which was over 30 hours travelling/transit and the 2 lifesavers where toys and food (oh and hi 5 on the tv set!).
We had a few wrapped up new toys (kids of all ages love unwrapping things) and little books. Phenergen to back up which we didn't end up using. Rescue remedy can help them to relax if they get wound up for some reason and if they have a dummy basically let them have it the whole time! It helps pop their ears and keeps them calm. Feed them (breast/bottle) as you go up and come down if they don't take a dummy. ------------- Jen, Charlotte 7 & Kate 3

Ooooh yes, flying with a baby, I remember
Maya was 20 mths when I took her to London. It wasn't so bad, I did pretty much what everyone else has suggested re: food and formula. One thing I can suggest is that if you want bottles heated get it done before you need them as they always heat them too hot and then you have to wait for them to cool. Also take your own baby food coz often they have a limited variety of ages/flavours. Our biggest problem was that Maya was too small to have a seat but too big for the bassinette so I ended up nursing her most of the way there coz the flight attendant nazi wouldn't let her sit up in the bassinette. Coming home wasn't so bad, exept that she had an allergic reaction to something and blew up like a balloon. Oh and if you'r ethinking of trying out Phenargan give it a trial run before you go - we gave Maya half a dose on the flight over and instead of putting her to sleep she was bouncing off the walls the whole way from Sydney to Bangkok. I also let her run riot in the transit lounges on stop overs so that she could burn off all her excess energy. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

Oh and we didn't have any probs with changing feeding times as by the time we had spent so much time travelling her routine was all up the shoot so we just established a new one when we arrived. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)
