Hi there

Our 1st baby is due in Jan next year so I am just starting to let myself think about what we need to buy and how much to spend etc. Had a quick squiz in Smiths City today at cots - wow, they are not cheap are they! How much did you spend on your babies cot? Did you buy brand new or second hand? Can anyone recommend brands? Touchwood look beautiful but they are spendy. I want to buy good quality but be practical as well.

Thanks

We bought a 2nd hand Touchwood off TM. We were planning to have a couple of children, so wanted something that would last a while. It was only 3 months old when we bought it, and it's now serving our 2nd child very happily. I like that the sides come off and it converts into a toddler bed - it was a good transition to the big bed. Not essential, but it worked well for us.

We got a growyears one from Farmers when they had one of there nursery sales.  Wasn't intending buying brand new but it was 50% off and couldn't refuse and we figure having a good quality cot will last the distance with  a couple of kids.  I have found it really easy to use and it can be used as a bed etc for later on.

Fully intended on buying off trademe but definitely would have got a new mattress.  Having one with bassinet height was important to me as we weren't going to use a bassinet but then got given one to borrow.  However we still have the cot at bassinet height as I have a little shorty who can't get her leg up yet

Having one with wheels on it too is good as you can easily move it around............I think some older cots may not have wheels.

We also brought a Groyears Legacy Cot when Farmers had a sale...from memory it was $700 but we got it for $350...it has different heights and turns into a toddler bed too :) I looked on TM but thought that people were asking way too much for the ones in excellent condition...I was a wee bit fussy and wanted it to look brand new lol

I guess it also depends on how many kids you want?

We got a 2nd hand Touchwood from TM ... been great! They are so strong and sturdy that easily last a couple of kids. And Touchwood can send you paint for touch ups.

I third the GroYears cot - its sooo scrummy and with the matching change table they are a very delicious addition to the nursery! I had my girl in feb and there are LOADS of sales around christmas at farmers so hang around and wait for one... I did see at one stage there were 50% off all cots/ change tables at the Palmy farmers but that was in april(ish)... At other times I think you can get it 40% off

Have fun! I remember we brought our cot way earlier than we intended but couldnt resist :) Also the mattress is very important - our wee girl has a sleepyhead one (from farmers) which is the best you can get there (IMO) and should last easily a couple of kids :)

I got a genesis cot from Baby factory on sale it came with a free mattress.

I would wait for the sales at Farmers and the like I found them as good as anything on TM and good after sales service.

Love our Touchwood cot! We brought new and it's onto our 2nd kid. Was great to help transition to big bed and very easy to put together (we have moved a few times so we are good at it now )
The only thing I would say if you are going to buy a new Touchwood is allow for time for it to be made. We were told 6 weeks and it ended up taking nearly 11. Some of that was cause they weren't happy with the finish so re-did it but still...

I would suggest checking out a few and try putting the side up and down cause this is something you will do every day. You might want to decide if you want one with a side you can put down with one hand as some you just can't.

We got a 2nd hand touchwood off trademe. Love it! I was pretty fussy so had to wait until one came up that I liked (I wanted white) but then we got the cot and changetable from the same place for about $400.

Had a few teethmarks/sratches but we just got one of the touchwood bar covers and that covers it all.

Im not a fan of 2nd hand cots so we bought ours brand new. For memory it cost $200 (AU on sale) and it is the Childcare brand (I think). We also purchased a new mattress, again just something I personally prefer to have brand new.

Thanks girls, this is so helpful! I would LOVE to buy a new Touchwood but I think I'll also keep my eye on Trade Me as you never know what bargain may come up. Farmers might also be a go especially if I wait for the Xmas sales. If this isn't cutting it too fine Dont want it sleeping in drawer!

Roll on 12 week scan so I can really start to plan. So exciting

So glad for you that you can finally plan these things BG!

We got a Touchwood but could only afford it because we got some money from my aunt toward 'something big'. I do really love it though and they seem to have great re-sale value. Just remember though that there's no rush (apart from looking for a bargain) because bubs will probably be in a bassinet for a few months anyway. I know we didn't order our cot until well after Kiara was born.

We got a Genesis from the Baby Factory from memory we paid $400 for it. I love it.

I prefer to buy NZ made which the Genesis cots are.

It was the floor stock one that they were selling. It only had one tiny scratch on it, which is by the wall so you can't see it.

Just FYI...Baby Factory will match anyone else's price too

We had a 2nd hand (from a family friend who had twins (so we actually got 2 cots lol)) Jolly Jumper cot. It fell to pieces!

We 'upgraded' to a 5th hand touchwood cot that we got for $175 on TM! Best purchase ever! Converts to a toddler bed and is so strong! It can hold DD (12kg) and me (53kg) no problem! I think new they are almost $800?? But they are worth it imo.

BG, if you are going to use a bassinette you can most definately wait till the christmas sales as most average sized babies dont outgrow the bassinette until around 4months old (from what i've read) so your newborn can just go into the bassinette
