I had my first bubs via c-section as she was breech, it was only discovered whilst I was in labour so was an emergency c-section. I'm now pregnant with baby 2, is it automatically taken for granted to try for VBAC? It will be 17 months after my DD was born. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I think it's totally up to you whether you have an elective C or try for a VBAC  ------------- mum to 3 lovely girls :D |

You will get referred to the hospital and some where between 30-36 weeks they will see you to talk through your options and what they recommend which is normally quite dependent on what happened for you to a c/s. Christchurch womens are quite pro VBAC but if you don't want to they will just book you in for an elective, they aren't pushy about it, just more supportive of women that do want to than some other hospitals. Their are risks to both so the decision is up to you. If you do decide to do a VBAC then everything is more monitored etc than with a VB, your mw can run through all that with you though and they go through it at the appointment as well.
My first birth was an elective for breech and I had a VBAC with my second, a few weeks ago I had my appointment to talk through this one and was given the option of booking for an elective if I wanted to even though I've had a VBAC, this was at Christchurch womens. -------------

Yeah its totally your choice. I had my son via emerg CS and I fell pregnant with my daughter 5 months later so there is only 14 months between my two, I was going to VBAC, but at 9 days overdue I changed my mind and they booked my elective in, no issues ------------- |

im not preg again but i too struggle with this idea...my ECS sucked and had multiple complications including severe blood loss and a chest infection from fluid on my lungs...but part of me is scared to go through the labour again just to possibly have yet another ECS...will be following you all! -------------    CHEM 6/12+ |

It also depends on why you had an emergency cs. If they think that you should be able to birth naturally they usually prefer you to try a vbac.

Lilfatty, it really doesn't matter what 'they' prefer, you really need to know your own mind and do your own research so you can let them know what you want (iykwim)
Sorry, not meaning that at you  , but it amazes me how many potential bullies (hospitals, doctors, mw's) there are out there, who will pressure you to do what they want, totally neglecting your wishes, fears etc, last time I looked it was us having the baby right? But knowledge is a powerful thing and if you have done your homework and know your own mind it is less likely to be swayed by idiots, but still open to someone willing to listen and advise.

I had an emergency c section first time around, 2nd time I was expecting a bubba on the 95 percentile and I'm little ... so my doc was suggesting it would be better to go for an elective, at my appt at hospital they were open to me trying for vbac if I liked but I would have a very limited time to try ... they were also happy for me to follow my doc's advice and go for elective ... then she felt my tum (and the size of the bub) and said she completely agreed the elective was the best option! I took their advice.
As it turned out the surgeon said there was no way in h*ll that baby was getting out the other way with my bone structure and the size of her! So I was very pleased not to end up with another emergency c, as the elective was far nicer! So anyway - what I'm trying to say is I found they were quite happy with me following my LMCs advice of an elective, but would also have been OK with me trying for VBAC if I really pushed for it (within reason). ------------- DS (5yrs) and DD (3yrs) |

have you read up on the Pro C/section support thread in the C/s topic area.
Im the reverse case and had traumatic VB. lost lots of blood, blah blah wont bore you with thestory first time and Elective C/s 2nd time at the preference from my OB.GP.MW which I was sooo happy with, ended up semi emergency as went into labour naturally. but it still wasnt stressful at all. am now preg with no3 and going c.s again, change of mw as other one has left and absolutely no questions asked, she asked me what I wanted. another c.s thanks! |
