Hi all

I just had a dating scan, and I am apparently measuring bang on 6 weeks. I expected almost 8 weeks based on my last period.

Granted that my periods used to be crazy irregular, for the last 18 months, they have regulated and are usually 28-32 days. For the scan to be accurate, I would have had to ovulate on day 26-27 of my cycle... that just doesn't make sense. I know scans aren't accurate to the day, but this seems way off.

I'm interested in hearing other peoples experiences with dating scans and whether you feel they were quite a way off.

According to my LMP my due date was 12/01/2011

I never went for a dating scan and went for my NT scan which i meant to be done at 14 weeks, but this scan showed that i was only 11 weeks along.. i was so sure that i was right and the scan was wrong!

They changed my due date to 02/02/2011 and my baby arrived on the 06/02/2011... Guess the scan was right after all!

Before my dating scan my due date was 18/11/11. That would of made me around 9 weeks along. Then at the scan they said I was only 5 weeks and 6 days along. So changed it to 11/12/11.

I went into labour on the 11th dec, but had her the 12th :)

So mine was quite accurate and I have always had very irregular periods.

usually the dating scan has a margin of error of 3-5 days - so normally they are bang on

mine was perfect to dates (and I conceived via IUI so knew the exact date of conception)

we are all sold the lie of ovulation happening for every woman 2 weeks after last day of period... that is the problem!! LOL
#1 I didn't have any scans and he was 10 days overdue by LMP
#2 I thought I was pregnant so had HCg bloods done several times (neg) then a positive one so we knew a very small window of Ovulation and conception which placed me ovulating the day or so before my period was due. (and she was born 1 day overdue so bang on)
#3 I was wise to this late ovulating thing so had a dating scan as I didn't have a clue where that would place me (unplanned UTD!!).... dating scan wiped 2 weeks off a generously allowed LMP.... and we'll see if this one arrives on time in a couple of months LOL

Anyway- the long and short of it is that some women do ovulate late in their cycle and that is perfectly normal :)

I think I probably ovulated late... but not that late.

Obviously it's kinda hard for me because I don't know who the father is... so every day counts.

For the scan to be more accurate than my cycle... I would have had to conceive on day 28 of my cycle... right when my period was due. So I think it's at least a week earlier than that.

Anyway... I guess it really doesn't matter at this point, because I've spoken to one of the potential dads and they didn't take it too well. So I guess I really am doing this alone. I think the second will take it worse...

Sorry to hear it didn't go well, although he may just be in shock and come round to the idea given a little time.
Regardless, good luck with your pg

Hey Looey- my oldest DS is now 15. His dad didn't want to know him. He has met him once and he still wants a relationship but I think he has accepted that it won't happen. He has a father in his life who he loves dearly and when he was old enough to understand I simply said his biological father couldn't cope with being a dad and was simply scared.
As a woman we get to choose if we have a baby. The father never has a say. Maybe give them the option of being involved or not. That way what ever happens it will be their choice.

Looey - if it helps your may have ovulated late due to you living in chch - there is alot of evidence from overseas that earthquakes can severely mess with a woman's normal ovulation cycle - so it may have delayed things - dating scans basically measure the crown/rump length which is pretty standard for all babies, they will be able to further confirm dates at the 13wk scan

Looey - I think that early dating scans can put you a bit 'younger' than you actually are...

According to my ov date - due on the 11th Jan... went for dating scan on what should have been 7 weeks exactly and was put back to 6 weeks 3 days... due 15th Jan.

Had further scan at specialist on what was now 10 weeks 1 day (according to dating scan) and was changed again... to 11 weeks, due 9th Jan. This was more like what I expected... I was a bit worried after the dating scan, but mind put at ease at the later scan...

Wouldn't be surprised if that happens to you also...

I was pretty sure of my ovulation date and the scans matched up...until later...by 12 weeks he measured 2 weeks ahead consistently and ended up being a big baby. I think the earlier the scan the more accurate the date. Don't wait until the 12 week scan if you want to be sure.

Yeah the scan is more accurate the earlier it is as the baby can curl up and stretch out at 12 weeks making the measurement less accurate

My DS2 was planned and I was pretty sure of when I ovulated. I booked in to see my Ob/gyn at 5 weeks and he did a scan when I thought I was 7w .. he thought I was about 5w+ .. which would have meant getting a BFP before AF was due. Anyways, the OB went with the later date (I think it was around Oct 25, I was expecting it to be Oct 16) till my next scan, 4 weeks later, when bubs was measuring bang on to what I thought he should be. He arrived October 12. I've always heard the earlier the dating scan, the more accurate but they're based on averages so there can/will be outliers too!

Good luck with your pregnancy

With DD I went for a dating scan and based on the day we BD'd (it was only once all month so I knew that was the culprit) I would have been 9 weeks. But scan said 7 weeks 3 days, 11 days difference... I was so worried etc until my MW explained to me...

After you BD, sperm survives for 5 days, so if you ovulate before or within those 5 days you can get UTD, then once the egg and sperm connect it can take a day or so for it to get down to the uterus and implant. Hence why LMP and scan dates can be out by 6-7 days.

ANywho, at my 12 week scan they brought me forward 3 days, so it moved to 8 days...

Further along in my pregnancy DD measured 1-2 days bigger than the due date and I have now come to the conclusion that like once they are born, all babies grow at different rates, I think she just started off little and made u for it later on! :)

From now on as long as the baby IS there, has a heartbeat and has grown since the last scan, nothing else worries me!

For DS I had m/c'd the month before so my dates were a bit of a guessing game as I hadn't had AF in between but had worked out the dates pretty well and was certain I was due 7th Jan 2010, at my early scan I was put back a week until 14th January and he arrived 20th Jan so the scan was more accurate.

With DD, I was positive of my dates - 100%. Again, the scan changed me from due 9th May to 19th May (10 days out) but I was sceptical of the change as I was so certain and had marked AF in my diary every month. DD arrived on 12th May so 39 weeks exactly and my MW said she looked a week early and I must have had a tummy bug or a flu and ov'd a bit later hence the change in dates.

So, all in all - the scan dates were more acurate both times

Wishing you all the best!
