Me that is not bubs, there doesn't seem to be a thread for Mum's health.
I've been sick more this winter than I've ever been and I seem to go from one illness to the next - colds, coughs, cold sores and tummy upsets.
Is it normal to get sick a lot in bubs first year?
Is there anything I can do to boost my immunity?
That's safe when bf.

Being unfit certainly doesn't help, getting fit is frustrating. Second trip to the pool - the temp was too low and I got a nasty rash from the chlorine. Going back after the holidays.
I guess between pregnancy and bf - bubs sucks what she needs out of me.

You could get some echinacea from a heath shop. It helps to boost immunity.

Your DH is away isn't he ? Are you napping/ resting when she does during the day ? Sounds like you might be a bit run down . I would head to the docs for bloods to make sure iron/b12 etc is okay as well . Take some vit c too, especially at the first symptoms of a cold. Be kind to yourself too

Docs don't care - I have one of many viruses doing the rounds and have to suck it up and wait it out.
I don't nap during the day, I have been going to bed early not long after Dd does.

I've been the same this Winter (since DS has been in daycare). I've started taking multivitamins and echinacea and being very rigorous on the handwashing etc. I haven't had anything for a couple of weeks now and I am feeling an awful lot better so I'm hoping that has done the trick!

Hehe, get more sleep? That's the advice I always got. About as helpful as telling me eat rainbows for breakfast with my DD though
Is there someone who can come and do a night here or there for you when you are really shattered? I'd offer if you were still local, but Aucks is a bit far for me!
Other than that, eat healthy, lots of fruit and veges seems to help.
But yes, for me, I got sick a lot more in DD's first year than ever before.

No there's no one to help at 3am with an unsettled DD. Only me.
I'll look for a good mulitivit and grab some echincacea, I was taking berocca every day and that helped with energy levels, need to get some more.

caliandjack I know a good naturopath in westharbour if you are interested in going that way. I often find them great when docs don't really help much.

That was me up until now. If there was a cough or cold going around I would get it. I had bad chest infections last year and have always had stomach trouble especially since baby.
My advice is PROBIOTICS, seriously I am like preaching them to anyone who will listen. I have been on them for nearly 2 months and since then I haven't had a single stomach upset. This is coming from someone who has had IBS since age 10 and probably at least 1 stomach upset a week. I also decided to try for the first time vitamins to help prevent winter ills, and I have been taking 2 vitamin c and ecchinacea tablets a day since 2 months ago, and no winter ills yet.
I am also taking a b vitamin for energy, and evening primrose oil to help with my skin as I get random breakouts. And I feel really good.
So Id try that. Also I have bub on inner health plus for kids and his tummy is a lot better too

Yip, this is me as well! Except DS is sick ALL the time too, and I catch whatever he gets. So glad I am not the only one. I try to sleep lots, take a multivitamin and eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, all to no avail!

I had illness after illness last year, ending in pneumonia, and they finally did an extensive blood test to find out why and it turns out that I am low in zinc! Apparently it's because I've been on iron supplements for so long, and iron inhibits the absorption of zinc - and turns out that zinc is really important for immunity. I've been a bit better this year, having a few weeks between being sick, instead of constantly sick.
Maybe you can ask your Dr to do a blood test to test for any deficiencies, in case you have one?
Otherwise I'd go with the supplements, making sure your diet is healthy and you are getting enough exercise. No other advice really!

Went to GP about DD and mentioned I'd been getting sick a lot and she was useless said there were a lot of bugs going around and there wasn't anything I could do about it.
Wasn't the usual Doc I see and felt a bit rushed and dismissed actually.

You will find most docs will not suggest any kind of "natural" remedy an tend to tell you to ride it out.
I highly recommend Clinicians zinc drops (put 5 in water or juice) the Healtheries winter combo (can get it at the supermarket has vit c, olive leaf, garlic etc.) and some flax seed oil capsules and then eating healthy, limit sugars and all the white carbs, eat lots of wholegrains, get exercise regularly and fresh air which hard to do when you are sick all the time but good to start slowly and build from there.
I tend to get sick when stressed or DH is away for long periods of time, so its good to try and protect yourself from stress if you can as well and not over commit yourself to too much.

I am like this too. Me and DD pass the bugs back and forth between us constantly. I haven't found anything that works yet, but a decent amount of sleep and good nutrition certainly help. Also, I take Kaloba if I think I am getting something - it sometimes holds it off and the rest of the time seems to lessen the severity.

Lol - a decent amount of sleep with being solo parent to DD isn't going to happen. Dh is back Friday and will be there to help, I'm hoping I'll eventually get back into better health with a bit of rest and support from him.

I found this was happening to me a few months ago, getting all the little lurgy bugs that were about so I took a course of Buccaline (from the pharmacy) to help boost my immunity and I have been great since. Think I'll take another course come spring which is when I usually get my 'annual' cold

Hi Cali
I haven't read all the replies, but in case it hasn't been said...
Apart from the obvious (sleep deprivation) and if your baby goes into playgroups or daycare etc. there's also the aspect of low iron.
I had low iron in pregnancy and it continued while I was breastfeeding because baby takes a lot of your stores. I would recommend getting a blood test for your iron levels. If they are low you are more prone to infections. I stopped taking my iron tablets around the time of baby's birth and I had one infection after another: a post-op infection, mastitis, suture line infection (had a c-section), urinary tract infection (I think can't really remember it's a blur!)

Thanks nathansmummy, DD doesn't go to daycare. My iron was fine during pregnancy.
I'll look at taking some supplements and see if that helps.
After a less then helpful response from the Dr I'm no in any hurry to rush back for any tests.
Everything I've had has been viral, I haven't had any bacterial infections of any kind. Even DD when she has been sick this winter has managed to avoid any fevers or infections. FX it stays that way.

Sorry I only just checked back on this thread. I find healtheries are a good brand to trust most of my vitamins are healtheries ones. I forgot to say Ive also been taking zinc mostly for hormone balance but it may be helping in other ways too. If you don't want to take a million pills I would look at a women's multivitamin that has got zinc, iron, b vitamins etc there is a healtheries one that has those things I took it when TTC. There's also a new elevit multi for women who have children, I haven't tried it but it's supposed to have the things women need when they are busy with children.
Probiotics probiotics probiotics hehehe :) Inner health plus or Go Healthy brand

Oh and re: the iron, I never had a problem during pregnancy with iron and recently I had a blood count and it showed I had low iron so I was put on a course of iron tablets for 3 months. I have felt better since with tiredness aside from when Ive had a very sleepless night, so it is definitely worth a check even if you didn't have problems in the past. I was very surprised I had low iron. I was the only person I knew due when I was who didn't!

I kept taking a vit supp (blackmores gold) and I think that really helped. I just spent 2 weeks in a house of 4 adults, 2 kids, a toddler and 2 babies ALL of whom were sick and I didnt get more than a tickly throat one morning. Having been pg and/or bf now for just over 3 years, my body "should" be more run down. The only thing I can credit is the multi vit and lots of fresh veg (though not when pg because it give me ms, weird!).
*whispers* plus I really think chocolate helps
