Hi,

My wee man was awake for the entire of last night screaming!! Went to Dr this morn and he has an ear infection, he flat refuses to take his bottle, he has always had a bottle and always drinks his bottle, but put it near his mouth and he screams.

He will take some solids and we have syringed a bit of milk in, which he HATED - is this the right thing to do, he needs some or he won't sleep and then the awful cycle continues

Ahhhh hate seeing him so sad.

It's so tricky when they're like that isn't it! If he is happy to take solids you could make solids as liquidy as possible - and alternate a spoonful of almost complete liquid with one less liquidy in the hope that he doesn't cotton on.

Other things I can think of...jelly, the Organics range of fruit gel thingies, oh...and try a sippy cup or little normal cup in case you can trick him that way.

I really feel for you. I know this situation well!

Will he drink from a plastic cup? Or even put some water/milk on a spoon and give some to him. Sometimes laying down and the sucking can be painful for them.

The swallowing will hurt heaps - the eustachian tubes between the ears and throat open whenever you swallow and if you have a middle ear infection, it can be pretty damned ouchie.

Is it EBM or formula? If formula, I'd leave it and get some pedialyte. That has everything he needs in it, and they can easily exist on it for a couple of days. Little and often. Try freezing it so it's a bit like a sorbet - put a tiny bit in his mouth and he may swallow it down as it melts in his mouth. Syringing a bit little and often. As the pain from the ear infection improves, he'll come right.

Poor thing. If it's any relief, I've always found my kids come right within 24 hours of starting ABs for an ear infection, meaning the pain seems to have gone by then and they are back to eating/drinking ok. He should be a lot better by tomorrow, just keep on top of the pamol/nurafen.

Nope still not drinking and its day 3, he's on day 3 of meds and still not drinking, he is hungry though so he is getting super milky solids and it seems to be enough to keep him going, he is having wee naps and then a bit of something then another wee nap.

Is he peeing, still having wet nappies? That will indicate if he is having ebough fluid. Also if no improvement after 48 hours on abs you might want to consider returning to GP anyway to check progress.
