I have been living in Sydney for the past 8 years and now as a new mum am ready to return to NZ for the 'good life'! My husband is being transferred and we will be relocating to Wellington. I was born there but left when I was 7 so my memory of the city isn't that good.
Can anyone give me some advice on any up and coming suburbs to buy in, costs of child care and any other baby related info..
Much appreciated.

Hrmmm... few Wellingtonians around here who have been looking at houses recently.
The northern suburbs are very family oriented. (Johnsonville, Newlands, Churton Park etc)
Churton Park is being developed big time... I went out there not long ago and there were huge new houses popping up on the Western side.
If I was looking at a house I'd buy in the southern suburbs... (Miramar, Kilbirnie, Lyall Bay, Seatoun etc) I like being close to town/beach but not crammed in an apartment. (Mind you, the chances of me being able to afford to buy a house here are slim to none!)
Childcare is by the hour for me and is $5 p/h... I think that is pretty standard though.

Jacq we were considering a move to Wellington at the beginning of this year. I suggest you have a look around www.propertystuff.co.nz to get an idea of what to expect for what dollar, but when you do come to moving over, rent for a bit until you get a feel for distance, price, neighbourhood, all that stuff.
Does anyone know what sort of family assistance is available for people newly moved to NZ?

When we move back we are going to look at around Churton Park/Khandallah or possibley out Whitby/Pauatahanui way. It depends what lifestyle you want really- do you want to be close to the city or would prefer the more suburban family type thing?
Have a hunt around on the net to get an idea of schools etc of the areas you are looking.
