Hi all. We are moving to Australia next year and I was wondering if anyone on here has either lived there or is living there. We are moving to Perth and I just want to know if anyone knows what the better suburbs and stuff are, prices of daycares roughly and just any general info people can tell me. I know I can google but I think getting info from actual people may be more reliable :)

We moved to Perth last year and have now moved to Mandurah which is 75km out of Perth. When we were planning our move I went onto the bubhub forums to ask the ladies there for advice on areas. Getting into rental properties can be very difficult, a friend went to an open home the other day and they had 30 people viewing the property which was then rented to the person who offered to pay $475 a week instead of the $350 that they were asking, that was in High Wycombe which is right near the airport. I have heard from Mums in my area that you pay around $70/day for daycare but you get 50% every 3 months or so, BUT I'm not sure if that entitlement is the same for kiwi's.
The one thing you do have to be prepared for in WA is that it takes longer to get things done (Wait A while in WA is a common saying) and alot of shops and supermarkets close at 6pm and are also closed Sundays. If you are planning on shipping stuff from NZ it can take up to 12 weeks for it to arrive I believe, we had to wait about 9 weeks from memory.
Good luck!!

Thanks MrsH. My partner is a chef and will be working in the mines so it will just be me home alone with the kids most of the time so I am willing to pay more to live in a decent suburb. We aren't taking anything over, my sister is moving over currently so we plan to stay with her while we get everything sorted.

I currently live in Australia and yes the childcare benefit is for all australian residents so kiwis living there. You can get the 50% daycare rebate paid every fortnight or quarterly. Its also not income tested. There is also the family tax benefits, one of which is household income tested but the other one is based only on the mothers income so a nice extra bit of money. Honestly it feels like they throw money at you here!
Medicare is the health system, fine for kiwis, you get about 50% of your GP bills refunded back from the govt too. I actually don't think there is anything that kiwis can't get if you're a resident (living here).
Good luck with the move.
ETA: We only arrived here 3 years ago. Only thing you can't get is the dole which is understandable.

the important thing to be aware of is that when moving to australia is only under certain conditions will you be eligible for all the benefits/tax credits that australian's get (there was a change to the system in 2001) and there is a standdown period for 2 years for some things.
ie ... Note: The Agreement does not cover workforce age payments such as parenting payment (single or partnered), newstart allowance, sickness allowance or special benefit. People moving from New Zealand to Australia who wish to obtain these payments must be:
an Australian citizen
the holder of a permanent visa or
a protected SCV holder (generally this applies to SCV holders who were in Australia on 26 February 2001. Some other exceptions also apply).
A two-year newly arrived resident waiting period also applies to most social security payments.
New Zealanders living in Australia who do not fall into any of the above categories and are not covered by the Agreement may however qualify for Family Tax Benefit, Maternity Allowance, Maternity Immunisation Allowance or Child Care Benefit. http://www.fahcsia.gov.au/sa/international/ssa/currentagreements/Pages/nz-nz_faq.aspx - linky
