How much television do you let your children watch? Do you ever sit them in front of the TV so you can get some time out?

DS doesnt watch much. I have Home and Away on when we are having tea and then the news but he is usually finished tea by then and busy roaming around. Once we have a bigger house, we will be having dinner at the dining table but don't really have room for that here.
He doesnt watch TV during the day. Im not much of a tv watcher and don't have it on during the day, we grew up like that too so I'm just used to not having it on. I might start using it next year when bubs #2 arrives though!

Dora is a lifesaver (and also a head killer lol) Sometimes I just need a break from two little humans hovering around my feet (perfect example - when I'm cooking tea). It's ok if DP is home, he will read them books or take them outside to play with the balls or something, but when he isn't home from work, it's the easiest thing.
Or if I have had stuff all sleep (because of children waking up through the night) and need to just rest after working all day and coming home to full on kids, then I turn the TV on and lie down on the couch and they come and go and come for cuddles or wander inside and outside...they very rarely just sit/stand and watch, unless it's Dora.

I hardly have the TV on at all. I have nothing against other people letting their kids watch TV but its not what I want my DD to be doing with her time. I probably switch it on maybe 2 - 3 times per week for Bananas in Pyjamas which is I think 10-15 mins long. I am a single mum and sometimes I think it would be easier to get some time out if I put her in front of the TV but I like that she spends time finding her own entertainment and seems to have a great imagination. She does spend time following me around chatting to me and "helping" me with chores but I kinda like that time we spend together, even if it takes me longer to get stuff done. I don't switch the TV on till she goes to bed and its my time to sit on the couch and relax.

DH and I don't watch TV at all but we do have a TV which we really only use for watching DVDs every now and then. Mostly it gets used for kids movies/Thomas the Tank Engine - DS isn't two yet so not interested in sitting and watching TV for any length of time, but he does like having it on in the background so when the music comes on (every ten mins or so if it's Thomas) he can do a little dance which is very cute. We don't have it on all the time but if he asks for it we'll put it on - I just watch to make sure he's not getting too fixated on it and it's not on for too long. As he gets older I will def be putting limits on when/how long the TV is on.

I don't turn it on during the day. DS plays outside if I need to get stuff done. Rain or shine he puts on his wet gear and boots and plays in the rain. He loves it. He watches about 30 minutes a day. It is made up of educational songs I put on in the afternoon for about 15 minutes and either Baby einstein or little einstein programmes for about 15 minutes in the evening when he has his bottle and before bathtime etc.
I have set myself a limit to 1hour a day but we hardly ever get to that, usually only when he is sick or doesn't feel too good.
I feel if you regulate what they watch and you interact a lot when they are not watching you can overcome the negative impact TV is said to have. It all depends on what you do when they are not watching tv.

We didn't hook the tv back up when we moved back into a house, its for dvds only. ATM they watch a.l.o.t of dvds lol we're housebound, its been awful weather and our house is quite small plus I'm so sick so its kinda the fallback and it means I can doze and rest while they're watching, usually while cuddled up with me. Before they got a max of 1 dvd a day and not even that sometimes. It'll go back to that I expect once I'm not pregnant.

Ty watches it occasionally, and I have no problem with it if it gives me five minutes to myself, but we are lucky to have this huge deck with a gate that has a pool, slide, sandpit and toy car on it...so why on earth would he want to be inside watching tv when he can be outside playing with all that?
