Subject: Welcome Ella Grace H.

Yes, little Ella Grace arrived at 11.39am on Thursday, after 10 hours of established labour.  I'd spent Tuesday and Wednesday nights having contractions as well, but not regular enough to be 'labour' as such.  Her arrival went really well - we turned up at the hospital for her induction that morning, already well under way in labour, so the induction was cancelled and HALLELUJAH away we went!  And by lunchtime, our little darling was here, having cuddles and staring at everything she could in the room.  I survived on the gas alone as by the time I was begging for EVERYTHING else that could be offered, it was too late (he he he... I'll bet they do that on purpose!).  Just like her mum and dad's temperaments, this baby was a bit stubborn and didn't want to turn to face anterior until after she was crowning (yeeek!), but she got it right in the end.  We bought her home after 2 nights, and she's settling better here.  It's her mum who can't sleep so well now!  Little Ella is still confused about night and day (as you would be, having just been born and all!), but she's a really good bubba with the loveliest manner - we both just adore her!  I'm settling into motherhood day by day - it's a huge change as I know you'll all know, but I'm loving it, and hubby feels like he's the Mac-Daddy of all daddy's right now!

Hope these pics don't come out too huge.  One is her just after being born, and the other is Ella coming home - she soooo didn't want her photo taken!

Awwwww, thanks everyone!  I'm so blimmin proud of her.  You did well keeping quiet, Janine - how'd you do it?!!  And Jezika... can't beat the name, eh!  But everyone - Jess's girl is Ella Grace.  Ours is Ella (middle name Grace)... so there is a difference!  Hope you don't mind me spelling it out for them all, Jess

So many bets were on Ella having red hair, but she's got light brown hair - it's straight but looked curly with the uh, how do I say it delicately, dampness of being just born.  Her eyebrows are blonde though.  For a while there her face was the most orange thing about her (poor wee mite!) but thankfully that's clearing up.

Hahha andie Ella Grace has the same hair color hers is darkening now and her hair color i can say now is auburn Eyebrows are still light hehe

Hope you dont mind me posting this here but do they look kinda like this?

This was young maybe 2 -3 weeks old

And this is yesterday

Seem to be darkening but it would be hilarious if they have the same color hair and eyes haha

Goooooo the auburn babies!!!! I so hope that Ella has red hair! And I hope Ella Grace does too.

My red haired child gets lots of comments on her hair and now people are starting to notice her lovely green eyes too! I'm so proud! (Can ya tell?)

Of course I don't mind, Jess!  This is the most recent one of Ella - taken today but blurry so it's not the greatest photo.  I've hardly got any of her with her eyes open since her birthday though!

I wouldn't call her hair red or even reddish - soooo many bets were on her being a ginga since I am and her daddy gets little red highlights.  Here eyebrows are still blonde, and her eyes are that newborn deep bluey-grey... I guess they'll go green since that's the only colour she's got to choose from out of her parents!

And I have to say:  GO THE LITTLE REDHEADS!

LOLOL. SEE WHAT HAPPENS, TE HE HE,
I love that pic of Ella andie,

I finally have mike realising why doing the deed after giving birth is not the best idea on your mind.. lol, he is 2 days post vasectomy, still very very bruised and said to me that "the docs advised a 3 day abstinence.. I would be happy at this point to say 3 weeks, maybe 3 months, it's so sore" i laughed, and said "multiply the bruising and swelling by 100 add rock hard leaky boobs, and a screaming baby, plus sleep deprivation and you will realise why i didn't want you near me" ahhh, he figures it out now. sheesh, i held his hand the whole time, he squeezed my hand so hard my arm got pins and needles. I do now know how it feels to have your partner going through pain and not being able to do anything, and it does feel bad.

lol nikki!!!

andie, ella is a gorgeous wee girl! only 2oz's and 2 days between our gals are you having trouble finding clothes to fit ella? my mum and sis went out and bought heaps of pink stuff the day charli was born as i had nothing, and none of it fits her she basically needs prem size

seriously? wow, I found that when i had paris, she was 7lb 3oz and she fittednone of the newbie stuff i had for her, but then she was loooong so that might have been it. Ayja fitted tiny tiny cos she was only 6lb 2, but then again, her body was long, so we had to get larger sizes and roll up the sleeves of the bodysuits.

Awww Andie! She's absolutely goooorgeous!! What a cutie! Damn, my clucking started just this week too I never thought the clucks would start so soon after, lol...

ETA: re the clothing thing, I managed to squish Ash into a prem outfit for coming home from the hospital. Couldn't resist! It was too cute hahaha but that was the extent of prem size for us.

Andrew was born 8' 4" and he was in 0000 for nearly 6 weeks. But he was long not fat 8 pounder. We had have really long socks on him as the 000 were far too big but the right length and the 0000 were the right size but too short.

Andie she is so alert in that photo. So cute.

Hannah was 7lb 3oz and grew into newborn size in 2-3 weeks. Fortunately for us, she was born into a hot summer and we had her in singlets and wrap for the first month

-------------

Newborn stuff (and one prem nightgown) without feet fit Ella - well, the sleeves are all way too long, but she's a long baby with pretty decent-sized legs (didn't get those from me!).  Some newborn-sized outfits with little short leg bits are just too short for her.

Vanessa your Charli must be tiny!  How adorable.  They look so cute in their baggy clothes, don't they?!

That is one thing i have now found, with working in neonates - when we do get in a big baby for med reasons or something.. even just a 7lb-er, we are like "oh wow what a nice big baby," the parent's go, "huh? we thought he/she was tiny".   But when you've seen a tiny tiny baby born just on 1 kg, and watched them grow.. when they go home at 2kg, or even under that. you think they're huge. lol.     Baby factory has really great cutest little prem outfits if you need them Vanessa.. - apparently very reasonable too, bodysuits, stretch'n'grows, in summer cottons and winter fleecey.

its REALLY weird when we get babies of mums that have had gestational diabetes - cos those babies can be like, upwards of 4kg sometimes. they completely fill out the hospital cots.. half of the premmies hardly make a dot in the cot when they first go into one, for the really bigger ones you kinda feel weird and awkward doing anything for them.. the same that i spose most people would feel working with a tiny baby... its the same, but reversed lol.. weird change of perspective.

Maya was hard case when I was in hospital with mastitis, she was 4kg born, and 3 weeks old by that stage and she looked a sight crammed into one of those fishbowl type hospital cot things.

Andie - I just noticed that one of the twins has the same capsule as Ella lol. They look so tiny in them!

And my two are both in a combination of 0000 and 000 stuff, mostly 000 and they are huge on them, but I didn't bother with newborn stuff given how quickly Maya outgrew it.

Janine - funny you say that. My sister's boyfriend's mum has diabetes (not GD) and so Gareth had to be in the special care baby unit when he was born for monitoring, Alison (Gaz's mum) said she felt soooo guilty that her baby was in there being so big and healthy compared to all the tiny little ones. Must be hard for both parties to have the big and the small in the same place! Very emotional I bet

Posted By: Andie
Date Posted: 22 October 2006 at 7:03pm
My gosh I found it emotional enough when our antenatal class did a tour of the hospital and the first stop was neo-nates... just the tiniest little people I'd ever seen.  But then when our Ella arrived, you should have seen hubby and I trying to hold her, move her and dress her on that first day - we were so awkward and unco anyone would think she was made of glass!

Yeah i found that with turning the babies.. the tiny ones, cos you get your hand under their head and shoulders and just use your other hand to sort of reach up the middle between the legs, holding the nappy, and kinda just turn em like that, sounds worse than it is.. but took me a while not to be unco, that and removign baby from incubator with cords intact, trying to wrap them and holding them.. not easy. lol

I am not sure that neonates is the best place for antenatal to go first, cos it freaks you out a bit, but then, better to do it first before going to the delivery suite.. when the reality really hits you i spose "argh i'm gonna have to deliver this baby!!"

Janine that was us, Kobe was 6 weeks early but 7lb 2oz cos of the gestational diabetes and he was huge compared to all the other babies in NICU. I always thought people would be like, why is that baby in here, he's huge. I remember being warned when i went into labour he would only be about 4lb if that but no, they did a scan and said he was a whopper (then tested for GD) Now my sister has a wee 1.3kg bubs in NICU and i can see how tiny they are, I love the wee prem nappies they have.

Im surprised they took you through NICU with an antenatal class, here in chch you arent even allowed to look at any of the babies that are in there except your own. Ive heard them tell people off real fast and your not even allowed in unless you are the parents or on the list of visitors.

Posted By: mum2paris
Date Posted: 22 October 2006 at 9:22pm
We allow antenatal to look through (provided we aren't too busy) and if mums might end up having bubs in there they can look thru. But we still ask that they please do not look at the babies i mean some people do sorta act like "ooh look at that one" you know, animals in the zoo kinda thing. but other than that visiting is with one of the parents present. Antenatal classes are brought in to see the unit and get told about things, not to see the babies as such.

Yeah i remember being shown around when we knew we Kobe was going to be in there but we didnt go with the antenatal class. Fair enough though, i know i wouldnt have wanted people staring at kobe like he was some exahibition. Getting used to the monitors is hard, everytime they beep I get a fright, spesh when bubs breathing gets really really slow, bit freaking but i guess you would get used to that working with them all day.

We do get a bit used to the monitors going off for no apparent reason, sometimes just baby wriggling and not getting good contact with the leads, but nooo, when they go off for good reason cos baby isn't breathing - I for one, am not used to that AT ALL! It freaks me out, and the few times it has happened to me i have been the one who has to do something, which is scarey, as i get a bit more experience i spose it will come as second nature - bit i still can never see myself being ok with it.
