Well as you all know the gremlins have arrived safe and sound, and I am still buzzing about what an experience it was giving birth. After 41 hours first time round, I wasn't expecting things to happen so quickly!
Sienna Marie Anahera Jayde Davis was born at 7.45pm weighing 2920g, and Mercedes Kailah Waimarie Faith Davis was born at 7.48pm weighing 3190g. The placenta was a whopping 1.2kg! My waters were broken at 2.40pm, and the girls were out 5 hours later!
And the story goes as follows:
We arrived at the hospital at 12pm, and I had to send Willie straight home again to get my shampoo etc that I had left at home. Anyone would think I was stressed or something
Anyways, the obstetrician came and explained that they would put the epidural in first so they could control my labour, then break my waters, then start syntocinon to start the contractions. Then we talked about after Sienna is born he would do a portable ultrasound to see what position Mercedes was in, and that we might need ventouse to get Mercedes out.
So the anaethatist came and put the epi in, which immediately made me sleepy, and Willie finally reappeared (it seems he stopped at KFC on the way back to the hospital ).
Yvonne (my midwife) went to break my waters and said that I was already 4cm dilated, up from 2 on the Tuesday before hand, probably because I had a show after that. Then she broke my waters at 2.40pm.
Contractions didn't start spontaneously so they started a syntocinon drip at 3.40pm. Then the contractions did start - and we discovered that the epidural had failed. Yvonne asked if I wanted the anathetist to come back and resite it, but I was coping ok, my only worry was that if I had to have an emergency c-sect they would have to do a general. We decided to wait and see.
By 6pm I was fully dilated, and the epidural all of a sudden decided to work (even tho I hadn't had any meds thru it since 3pm!) so I couldn't feel to push. To make things worse, Sienna's head was flexed, so she was a bit stuck and her heartrate was dropping with each contraction which indicated that her head was getting compressed.
The obstetrician came back and said I had to keep pushing, but that they might need to ventouse Sienna out if she didn't come down soon. Then Yvonne said she could see the head. I didn't believe her, I thought she was just trying to encourage me, but Willie was crying saying "she has heaps of hair, I can see it!".
Yvonne went and found a mirror, and I could see Sienna's head coming thru and the next thing you know she was out! It was so different to Maya, it didn't actually hurt that much. Willie cut her cord and they passed her to me, but I still had a really strong urge to push. I was thinking "I can't do this again!".
The obstetrician went to break Mercedes waters (she was in a separate sac) and put a clip on her head to monitor her heartrate, and he discovered that she was right there ready to be born!
Willie grabbed Sienna from me, and three pushes later Mercedes was born. Yvonne delivered both babies, which was awesome, and the obstetrician delivered the placenta and gave me one tiny stitch for a first degree graze.
I had skin to skin with Mercedes while Willie had skin to skin with Sienna, then they cleaned them up and dressed them. I had to stay in bed for an hour and have some meds to stop me bleeding as it was quite heavy, but then after a quick shower and the best ham sandwich in the history of the world we transferred to Birthcare.
Big sister Maya visited first thing Sunday morning and she is over the moon. She wants to hug her babies all the time, which is a bit of a worry - she might kill them with love.
We could have come home yesterday but Sienna is a bit jaundiced so they wanted to wait and see how she went, but she didn't need the lights after all and we came home first thing this morning. They're being fully breastfed and I'm feeding them both together which is heaps quicker.
So now both girls are asleep, big sister is watching Care Bears, and I am having five minutes peace!
Thanks everyone for your well wishes and congratulations, and for your support thru what was a very difficult pregnancy for me - it was all worth it in the end!
