Okay so had a lady from Mercury Energy call and offer me a 3 yr deal - supposedly a thankyou for being a customer...

Its locking in a rate for 3 yrs... but the rates are up a wee bit than current.

Have no idea how much power is supposed to go up in next 3 years, does anyone?? so is it worth it?

Day Rate 15.32 Lock in 3 yr 16.99
Night Rate 11.84 Lock in 3 yr 13.09

Daily fee 1.83 Lock in 3 yr 2.06

I told her to ring back tomorrow don't like people ringing up out of the blue with a 'deal'

Oh $150 to get out of it....

Yeah I got the same thing in the mail, we've only joined up with them. I was wary of it too. No idea how the power will go over the next three years.

three years is a long time to be locked into something as competitive as power. I would take the offer to contact (they are begging for customers at the moment) and see if they can offer better!
(we just switched from meridian to contact)

Yep 3 years is a very long time. Most companies will only offer 1 year contracts (and they are usually a pretty good deal) but yeah, I'd be wary of 3 years ...

Have a look at that powerswitch website to see how it compares. I'm with the others though, a 3 year contract doesn't sound good.

Ring around. I used to work for a power company - the amount of times our customers rang us with deals offered from others that didn't include gst in their prices was insane. Also 3 years is a very long time when prices could very well drop....personally wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

I second ringing Contact - we switched from Mercury to Contact and save about 30% per month.

I wouldnt. 3 years is a long time to be locked in especially when programs like Whats My Number and Powerswitch are causing power companies to become more competitive in order not to lose customers.

Thanks for the replies the powerswitch website is good.

We actually switched from Contact to Mercury 18mth ago, that was cheaper then, Now according to powerswitch graph which shows the trend over last 3 years. Contact went down in last 18mth and mercury $$ has gone up so we could look at changing again. Interesting to see not all power companies prices trending up.

Not going to take this 3 year 'deal'

Also the fact that the Mercury salesperson has been very diligent in calling back makes me think she gets paid per customer taking up this 'deal'.

First call I was busy and I was to polite to say buggar off, she said she would call following evening.
She called 2 days later spoke to my husband who fobbed her off and said best to talk with me... so she called today and got me.

Thinking if it really was a deal the company wouldn't push it so much, they would just advertise it and leave it to you to take the offer up. I see Pumpkin Patch Facebook page shows 50% off dresses starting tomorrow, thats a great deal and no-one from Pumpkin Patch needs to ring me to get me to go down to the shop tomorrow

A bit irrational I know, but I refuse to ever go with Mercury.

I hate that they send staff out to knock on doors to drum up new customers.

we have just switched to meridian on a 2 yr contract and their rates seem to be quite good.. it's still high but nothing like the amount we were paying for the old company.

Really?
The only door knockers we get are Mercury, twice a year religious, and people looking for donations.

we signed up to that offer, then our current company (geneisis) price matched the offer as we had not long changed to them and wanted to keep us. so now we are on a very low power price (cheaper than the one they offer) and its set for 2 years.
plus they threw in a $50 credit on our next power bill
