Just wanting to share with everyone that my son who has had severe reflux for 10 months and who has been on omeprazole +/- ranitidine for almost all that time has now turned a corner I believe due to the advice of a paeditrician. Initially we were giving omprazole by opening the capsule, ginding it in the mortar and pestle and mixing it with breast milk. Then we moved onto the liquid suspension. Then we added ranitidine. It didn't seem to work at all. Then 6 weeks ago we saw a paediatrician who said that giving it with milk or as a solution was ineffective, and the best way to give it was to open the capsule and give it 1/2 hr before food with a teaspoon of pear or apple. Basically it needs to be given with an acid for optimal effectivness (impossible if your baby is not on solids I know). Anyway, our baby is SO much happier - it doesn't stop the spilling or vomiting - just the pain. ANyway, just thought I'd share - it may make someone elses life more bearable!

Glad your son has his reflux under control now, poor little man    A shame that no one has told you this info earlier though - it was one of the first things my gp told me. Have a read of this website http://www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz/medicaltreatment/medicationinstructionsheets/ - Crying Over Spilt Milk . The page I have linked to has an info sheet which tells you how to give the granules

Yeah finding this out was a great thing for us too but my GP discouraged it when I asked her and midwife was adamant to give losec with milk which is apparently the worst thing to do. I think the medical profession are not necessarily up with the play on this info but Mums of refluxers are hehe so its cool that you are sharing

Hi. My child now 8. had bad reflux as a baby. she still does and was still on the meds. recently we figured out its the dairy products cause my sister now pregnant has heartburn in first trimester and cut out all dairy and shes fine. cut out dairy of my girls and shes fine and off her meds. i feel really bad for not figuring that out earlier.

we're doing this with my 8 week old baby. It feels so bad to be giving 'solids' to a newborn, but I'm reassured after reading your post! Glad to hear we're at least using the medication the best way we can and hopefully it will help her soon

The info sheet on Omaprazole suggests pear also. We were giving it to our boy this way when he was only 6 weeks old as they say 1/4 is not classified as solids and it also helps line the gut and aid the digestion on the meds.
