POSSIBLY TMI but however!!! I am after reassurance!

When Blake turned about 6 weeks he stopped pooing. I thought he was constipated due to Losec so gave him Brown Sugar and water (well Mark did..alot of it whilst I was out living it up at the shops for 45 minutes and forgot Blake was due a feed :o( ).

Blake did such a huge poo the next day if I had emptied his nappy..it would have filled a cup!!It was everywhere. I didnt know where to start. In fact I ended up in giggles as otherwise I would have cried!

Up to his shoulders...down to his feet. When I took off all his clothes it went in his hair. It was a nightmare. I had to jump in the shower with him.

MY PROBLEM with this is it seems to be what he does now. He poos once every 5 - 6 days and there is just masses of it. i dont understand where on earth it comes from. There is no way wipes or flannels would even clean up half of it??? Shower is the only thing and everything inc change mat ends up in a bucket!!

Is anyone elses baby like this???? Today I had to postpone and appointment because it took me 45 mins to get him sorted out!Was unreal.

Doy ou think there is something wrong with him???

I dread the day he does one when we are at the shops because I just wouldnt know what to do. I think I would have to wrap and cloth nappy round him and his clothes and go home!!!

hmmm i know its not uncommon for babies to go a few days without pooing but in terms of volume im not sure. I know Addison has done a few that call for a bath straight away but not on a regular basis. maybe mention it to plunket or your doctor next time

just a question but are you breastfeeding? the reason I ask is that Ive heard formula fed babies can go a few days to a week without pooing, as for the amount of it.. it would of been the brown sugar mix (make sure you arent giving him too much as it can make him sick - we gave it to bailey too and lets just say it cleaned him right out!) If you are finding him constipated (or you think he is) try just giving him boined water or try boiling a couple of prunes in a about 1 cup of water and feeding him the water - I wouldnt be giving him any more suger at his age

my plunket nurse told that when they're fully breastfed they can sometimes go for up to a week without pooing. maybe still ask your plunket nurse about it though if he's doing it on a regular basis.

One of the wee boys in my antenatal group would go for up to 10 days between poo's. And when it finally came..... well, it was HUGE!! It's completely normal, and you are not to worry about it! My friend now jokes about them being a "1 poo a week family"

Kelpa, my Mum tells me very similar stories about me as a baby including the nappy wrapping until she could get me home for a wash and change!
Its no fun for you (or him either probably!) but its not anything to worry about hun.

Kelpa - I'm sure many of the longer term members on this forum remember my tales of Hannah's few and far between explosions. She spent a couple of months only doing poos once every 7 days or so. Her longest period was 10 days, which culminated in the biggest mess I have ever encountered in my life while I was out at the races in Ashburton on Boxing Day 2004. Completely unprepared, might I add. (And with me wearing a while top. Which is no longer white.) If you want the full story, I am more than happy to elaborate... if only to make your own situation seem comparatively under control!

So yes, other babies do the same thing. Han didn't seem to be constipated... she had no trouble going when she did, it just took a while to build up... but boy, once it started it seemed not to stop!!!

Just make sure you never ever leave the house without a million cloth nappies. They double as cleaning cloths/drying cloths/wrapping cloths/spare change of clothes for babe/mummy cleaning devices/spare top for mum/blankets etc.

Yep, like everyone else has said, many breastfed babies don't poo every day and it is completely normal. If he hasn't pooed after 10 days then you should start to worry. And when they do go, oh boy do they explode. Maya was the same - nothing would contain it at all!

Bottle fed babies should have at least one poo every day. It is very uncommon for breastfed babies to become constipated, but fairly common with bottle fed babies due to the consistency of the formula.

Jack was like that for a couple of months maybe not that big every time but we did have a few biggys. Me and DP would have turns changing the poo. I actually quite liked it as nappy changing wasn't so bad. He did grow out of it tho.

I just felt sorry for the very well-dressed lady in the chrisp white shirt and lovely gold jewellery who ended up with yellow baby poo up her arms from holding Han over the sink while another lady wiped her down with toilet paper! hehehehehe
Honestly... that stuff is oil based. You'd think soap and water would work, but no. It is turps material.
