Hi. I am 32 weeks pregnant and do not know the sex of the baby as it has conveniently had its legs crossed for five different scans. Mothers instinct however tells me I am having a boy. My partner and I have selected a name for a girl - Lily but we are having real trouble with a boy's name. We would like something not too common but not too unususal. We have toyed with the idea of Riley, Caleb or Ashton. Could I please have some ideas of other boys names out there or your thoughts on these boys names?
Thanks. It would be much appreciated

Hiya,
My partner and I love the name Ashton, hence it's our choosen boys name! But myself and everyone else around me thinks i'm having a girl! So obviously my choice there would be Ashton!
I also really love the names Jacob and Owen :)
Happy hunting!

Hi
When I was pregnant with my son (Jack) I had a 1st name and 2 middle names picked out for a girl and only a 1st name picked for a boy after he was born I called him Jack Wyatt although I really liked the name Riley (partner didn't). Now I'm expecting my 2nd baby and can't think off anymore boys names I like that haven't already been used by family already or that my partner likes aswell however if it's a girl I still have the same names picked as we had before.

Good name choice we have decided to call our boy caleb as well, which is really strange as we thought that it wasn't a very common name. His middle name will be the same as his fathers which i think is a really special thing you can do for the father of your boy. Have you considered doing this? after all we get to look after them for the first nine months of their lives.

If we have a boy we will be using my husbands first name (John) as the middle name, or if it is a girl we will use my middle name (Elizabeth) as her middle name as it has been going through my family for a few generations now.

if it is a boy we are going to use my grandfathers name as a middle name and if it is a girl my grandmothers name. I think it is really nice to give them a family name

Good on you for going with the family name! Its so much more personal I think than a name pulled out of the hat

Hi there
Well - When i was having my first child, the midwife, my doctor, my mum and all her friends (all from the old school) all said i was carrying a boy... my sis did the wedding ring and strand of hair thing and it to said a boy.... we did not want to find out from the scans but thought that everyone can not be wrong - but the thing was we only had a girls name... we could not come up with a boys name. so when i gave birth and the midwife told my husband to have a look and tell "mum" what it is, he had a very shocked look on his face.. as he said "it's a Girl?" So our first child was a girl - we had chosen Tori and she got my middle name as her middle name and our surname is Wright.... so Tori Fleur Wright came in as a girl much to EVERYONES astonishment... then i was preg with my second about 3 years later this pregnacy was totally different.. i had morning sickness (which i did not have the first time) i was "carrying" differently and i wanted different foods... so we thought it was a boy... we only had a boys name.... so we thought that will be it - and the middle name will be the same as the fathers middle name, then we thought - that the "boys" name will be quite cool for a girl aswell... so we thought of a middle name for that one... birth time came.. and it was a girl (WOW) so Dyon (pronounced dion) Aiesha (pronounced i e sha) Wright was born - again to everyones horror.....
Well - now i am 9 1/2 weeks preg with my third and again we have a girls name picked (Payge Xanthe)and we are deciding on the boys name (between Rene and Korbin) with yes you guessed it the middle name the same as my husbands.
So you can never tell - and i think your best clue is the name you find easiest to come up with is the one you will have.....
Tell me what you think of my names.. it would be great to hear back from people

I named Maya after my favorite poet Maya Angelou, and her first middle name Grace because I liked it. Her Maori middle name, Te Irirangi Marama is after her Dad's sister (he picked it) and means the place where heaven and earth meet.
Maya Grace Te Irirangi Marama Davis.
My 10 year old isnamed after her dad's mum who was Mona Tewhaea, but they were drunk when they registered her birth, and they thought Mona-Lisa sounded good so she is MOna-Lisa Tewhaea Davis.

I'm hoping to have a girl & have already come up with her name. But if my girl turns out to be a boy I have chosen the name Atrayle. The character from The Neverending Story - which happens to be my most favouritest movie in the world! Well I just recently found out that I had been pronouncing the name wrong all my life & it is really Atreyu, lol, however it's too late to change my version! Our girl's name will be Chéyenne & both our grandmothers names will be her middle names. Ashton is a very popular boys name, we already have 3 in our family!

I went to see neveremding story as well. but the sequels sucked!!!!!! I'm hoping to introduce bubs to the magic of Jim Henson. Oh, for those of you who are interested - the best ever kids movie I've seen is a Japanese movie "my nieghbour Totoro" - Hayao Miyazaki. If you can find it, borrow it, or steal it - do so!

My fave movie of all time has to be The Princess Bride though. It is sooooo cool! When I was a kid we had it on video, and my brother and I know all the words. Then when I was in Australia in April The Princess Bride was screening at this historical theatre near my mum's place, so we went to see it, and it is just as great as an adult as it was when I was a kid!

Oh my gosh...I didnt know that many people knew about The Princess Bride. My cousins had it when we were kids and every time i went to stay, without fail, we would watch it. I'm sure I know all the words off by heart! Great film - also we watched the original Grease and later on Dirty Dancing. They just dont make movies like they used to!!
By the way, we have names picked out for both sexes, as we are not finding out what sex the wee bundle is. Both first names are of great significance to us (especially me) as they follow in my family's line. My partner and I arent married so my surname will be his/her middle name i think and they will have their dads surname.

oooh i loved those movies - my older sisters were all teens in the 80's so i got maximum exposure to all the movies and music...I think the dark crystal is really good! as for the names thing, mike chose Paris Harmony. I like Jasmine Veda, or eden nicole. for a boy i think we liked sage, bailey, xavier, or issac.. but looking at them now, i don't think i would use them lol!
we've also talked about, if we had another girl, we like the names india, or aja (asia).. but then people might think we are naming our kids after counties or something

all really good names. I want to call our baby Ty if its a boy but my husband doesnt like it because its really similar to his middle name Thys (which i love and would really love to have) But there is no way he would let me have that. Im the opposite to you. There are heaps of boys names i like but cant find any girls ones. Im really picky though as We had over 1500 patients on our role and as you can imagine alot of names remind me of kids that wern't the best behaved.

when i was looking at names i couldnt find many i liked but the boys names i did like were tyler, mitchell and zak, girls i like delaney and mckenzie. My husbands son is named after a character in a david eddings book and i have never heard it anywhere else. finding a name for your new baby seemed to be the hardest thing ever, my mum said it wouldnt matter what we called him, he would still grow up and say "why did you call me that, i dont like that name".

how true - i'm worried Paris will grow up and hate her name - its nice, but sometimes it sounds a bit fairy-ish lol. - Paris Harmony. I liked the name tyler.... but tyler taylor would have sounded silly.

its so true that you never want to call your baby a name that you know from your past - especailly if you didnt really like the person!! mark and i have always really had pretty much definate names organised but looking thru name books just to be nosey there were heaps that he liked and i didnt and vice versa. Also, some people say that deciding on names too early can be bad as by the time its born, quite often your sick of it and change names anyway!
Got 19wk scan on wednes morning and am real nervous.

Re getting sick of the name - i was told before i had bub that i should go outside and yell out the name as if i was calling the kid already, that way i would be able to tell if it was a name that i wouldnt get sick of, it worked too, i eliminated quite a few names. funny tho standing on the porch yelling out to an invisible child.

Good luck with your scan Vangelitsa. I relly enjoyed seeing Maya swimming around, and by 19 weeks you can see all the bits - arms, legs etc.

i had my 12/13 wk n/t scan last friday. i couldnt belive that it really looked just like a baby, kicking away, although i still cant feel it. It was amazing to see what i had created, (almost made me cry), cant wait till my 18-20 wk scan.
Although after i have already been to 3 scans (1st-dating but to early, 2nd dating at 9wks, 12-13wk n/t) i have found that some of the ladies who scan are better then others. i found myself with my second scan i had a lady who did the scan without telling me anything, i had to wait for the mail to see how far along i was. Then for the 1st & 3rd scan i had a lady who talked the whole way through, commentating and making sure we knew wat we were looking at and pointed out all the parts, it was amazing. i think for the next scan i will be asking for the talkative lady.

Well, dont know why i stressed so much (its jsut something i have always done!!).
The scan was fantastic - the obstritician said everything was excellent and seemed thrilled with our progress. I cant tell you how relieved i am. He (we still dont know the sex!) was sucking his thumb the whole time and waving and kicking and we were even shown all 4 heart chambers, and could see clearly the 'boney' fingers, it was amazing. Dont think mark had even made it to the phone indise b4 ringing his parents with the goss!! It was just so great to see things a lot more clearly than the last scan at 13 wks. Next one isnt for 11 weeks at 30 weeks but thats cool. He also clarified that the feelings i thought might be wind, are actually the baby moving. Theres a constant party going on in there and Mark says if its a girl, he'll be putting a quick stop to that!!
Just thought I'd let you know anyway that all is great, and am now off to bed... thanks for your thoughts

I had my 1st scan at 13 wks but only cos we were in England when we found out I was pregnant and my obstetrician and g.p. wanted to make sure of dates. Yesterday was my routine 19wk one and he told me that my next (and possibly last one) will be at 30 wks. To be honest having the 3 scans will be enough for me - unless they feel the need for some unforseen reason that I need another one later. I have heard mixed reports that there may be some risks to having too many.
I read tho, one of the ladies was having heaps of scans too - was this thru choice?

i had scans every week from about 8 wks till 14, then one at 19, and a few more, but that was because was with multiple miscarriage clinic. It was quite bizarre watching the changes, almost seeing my boy grow. I know in nz you can get more if you request them but you may have to pay.

I had 4 - 8, 12, 19 and 36 weeks. The 8 wk was only because I have kidney problems, and they were doing a kidney scan and I asked them to look at bubs too. Then I had thenuchal at 12 (by request as I am not a t high risk), and the 19 wks scan, and the scan at 36 wks was to check bubs position (she was posterior).
I heard that having lots of scans can make baby's growth slower, and a smaller birthweight, but Maya was born at 38 wks, and was 9lbs, so it obviously didn't affect her!

Coming up with names is SO hard. I have less than 2 weeks to go and we are still undecided!! The short list is Mikayla, Madison or Ella. But hubby is ADAMANT on Mikayla (which is the name he picked for our 1st child if he was a girl 10 years ago!!) I like it but dont love it - would prefer Madison which he likes but HATES Maddie which it would get shortened to. Ella is pretty.
What about Nico for a boy? This is what our last boy would have been called if it hadnt seriously clashed with out sir name!!

I'm currently 14 weeks and have picked Blake Ethan Tyler for a boys name and Taryn Grace Tyler if it's a girl - we already have a wee girl who's 2 and her name is Briana Caitlin Tyler. I also have two step children a 12 yr old boy names Aedan and a 11 yr old girl named Keszia.
I've also had 3 scans, one at 6 weeks to determine how far along i was (had no idea when my last period was), then one at 10 weeks to check heart viability as we didn't detect one at the previous scan and one at 12 weeks for the nuchal fold scan. I love having scans and would have one as often as they let me. I enjoy seeing baby develop it's such a thrill.

I always wanted a girl first as well - everyone convinced me i was having a boy - even up to the delivery - the nurses and calvin had been talking about the sex of the baby and the last thing i heard before she was delivered was "boy" - then calvin my husband said it was a girl - it took me a few moments to register what he said. I was over the moon. This time i hoping it is a boy and desperatly want to find out before he/she is born - i hoping the scan at 18-20 weeks shows the sex.

ha, when paris was first born, mike thought she was a boy, till the midwife said "nooo look again"
this time everyone was so convinced ayja was a boy. lolol. i had so much fun keeping it secret. but up till we found out she was a girl.. i had thought i was having a boy too, and had only picked out leo as our boys name.. then we found out and had to find a girls name.. boy was that a heated debate!

Yeah i must admitt it took a little while to come up with names for briana, calvin and i had different opinions, However this time we are fully prepared with names for both, although as the pregnancy progresses i'm not so sure about our choice for the boys name..........may have to have another look at that................heheh....will keep you informed .......you'll know as soon as i do...........
Actually speaking of names i have two girlfriends who have children close to briana's age............the kids names are Brianna, Kiana and mikayla so you can imagine how much fun it is when we call our children, every time i call my little one her daughter brianna (the other one) pops her head up.............

My family is all Franks, Johns, Michaels and Paddy's. Bet you can't guess which country these leprechauns came from lol.
I told my midwife at my first appt that I was having a girl, and that she would be born early. The midwife said, this is your first baby, how can you possibly know? Well I was right, we found out she was a girl at the 18 week scan, and she was born at 38 weeks.

My son's name is Alan it is really old fashioned infact I did not like it when I first herd it, but I told my partner he could name him and I could not go back on that for the record the name has grown on me and I love it he is named after his great grandfather which is great. It totally suits him and he won't have heaps of qother kids his age with the same name.

I'm pretty sure i knew with Paris.. i remember lady asking me early on and i said it would be a girl, but once everyone else gets their opinions out you start wondering if maybe you are wrong. Ayja i had no idea.thought she might be a boy, was usrprised when they said girl, made them check the scan twice... i think i may have sounded dissapointed.

I was positive Alyssa was a boy. Had all boys clothes and everything. No i didnt find out from the scan was just sure in my head. Just goes to show how wrong i can be. But I thought Jayde was a girl, because it was ver similar to pregnancy with ALyssa and I was right. Yay. I guess you have a 50/50 chance aye

yeah we did a thing for weights and sex with both kids... Ayja was more for weight though.. and none of us got anywhere near really..we all guessed larger than paris and she was complete opposite. mike was very happy with imself when paris was born though cos he guessed exactly the right weight... i never heard the end of that.

HI im Judith, New here, I was sure i was having a boy with my first son, and my scan confirmed that, I was sure he was going to be drakon, strange, i hate it now, when my son arrived i looked at him and Caleb James poped in2 my head, and that stayed. This preg i want a boy but my instincts say girl... im liking the names Breannah Jayde or Jayda Rose for a girl, Jaycob Samuel or Vadem Ryatt (riot) but all my mates say ohhh your gona name your baby after outback jack... but everybodys name came from somewhere...

Just rambling here, but why is it that whenever you meet someone, they feel the need to tell you about any of their close relatives/friends who have the same name as you?
Not the same as you mentioning your niece, Judith... its different when you are discussing names... it just annoys me to be told of every other "Rebecca" someone knows.

My cousin is a Tara, I think we would have chosen that as one of our names otherwise.
It is so hard finding names isn't it!? The kid has to live with it for the rest of their lives. I always feel sorry for those famous kids who get weird names from their parents!

i think there's a huge difference between smacking with an open hand and using things like jug cords and all that crap.. i know the current law says something about whatever force they deem reasonable.. but who in their right mind would ever think that using something like that would be "reasonable" . I have never smacked and don't plan to, simply because i feel that as children me and my sisters were OVERLY disciplined that way and i could never do that to my child, instead i have equipped myself with all the other tools i can find... so it's definately nota case of spoilt brat getting away with everything. lol. so far the time out seat only needs a mention and i get the desired result, she's only been on it about 3 times, and when i go to get her she calms down and goes and does what she's told. PAris gets her feelings hurt very easily. i know that'll probably change as she gets older and she might be more wilful and testing but right now that works for us.

I'm not sure exactly what the law entails but I still believe there is a time and a place for physical discipline. Though for me, this means 'not in anger'.
I'm not sure I would ever smack Hannah, but I am thinking of my little brother and rough boys in general who only respond to that kind of thing.
Such a fine line between discipline and abuse these days
