Are there any mums here who have had preemies? My daughter was born at 28 weeks last year. She was 2 lb 11 (1.235kg). I had her at Auckland City Hospital. She's now 14 months old and is developing really well, I'm so proud! She has started taking her first steps too, she walked 10 steps to me this morning.

Both of mine were premmies but 4 weeks early. DS had IUGR and was 4 lbs 12 ozs and DD was 6 lbs 2ozs. My friend had daughter 5days before my son and she was 14 weeks early 466 grams. At 9 she can talk and very small for age and is behind in most areas.

Yay on your DD taking her first steps

My girls were born at 33+6 weighing 1.6kg and 1.7kg. I was flown to Waikato to be induced cos there was no room in Welly for us but came back to Hutt SCBU 5 days later.

My girls are two now and apart from being little you'd never know they were premmies.

My daughter was born at 34+1 at 5lbs 8oz, pretty big for 6 weeks early. She was in special care for 10 days and apart from ongoing reflux and asthma issues you would never be able to tell. She's taller than most other kids her age and people are often surprised to hear she was prem.

My DS1 was born at 32 weeks, 1.92kg. He breathed on his own from the beginning and was amazingly only in NICU for 10 days before we took him home He was hitting his milestones for his real age by 6 months and now you'd never know he was prem, in fact I'm sure a lot of people think I mean a couple of days early rather than a couple of months if it comes up ;)

Exciting that your DD took her first steps recently Daneile :D

I remember the first steps they are so precious!

My DS (turning 2 next month) was born 34 + 6 and weighed 2.63 kg or 5lb7oz which is quite impressive for a premmie. We were in SCBU for 9 days, came off CPAP etc really fast and went from strength to strength.

Met his milestones 6 weeks late until he was probably about a year but at 2 years is now weighing nearly 14 kg so nothing small about my wee precious premmie.

His only premmie related problem was that he had a convergent squint which was quite severe and we sat on a wait list for over 10 months through the public system but at just over a year old he had his surgery and now you wouldn't ever know he was cross eyed. His co ordination and speech improved immensely after the surgery - within 2 weeks he was taking steps, straight away was putting the right shapes in the right holes in his puzzles etc.
