Can someone give me some advice. I am under the impression that if a car seat has a tether strap it must legally be used. What I want is a good quality car seat/booster that doesn't require a tether strap so we can use it in my parents cars too. All the ones I look at seem to say tether compatible. Does that mean I have to use it (if you don't use LATCH), or just that you can use it if you want. Recommendations also appreciated. Thanks!

It depends on the manufacturers instructions/requirements for the seat.  We have a Diono Radian and it has a tether strap but it is optional to use it (rear or forward facing) - although it probably gives you a better install if you do.

I'm not sure what 'tether compatible' means - you'd probably have to look a bit more into the instruction manual for the particular seats to see if it is optional or not.

Just a note, using LATCH does not change whether or not you have to use a tether, LATCH replaces the seatbelt function rather than the tether strap.  Our other carseat, an Evenflo Symphony 65 is installed with LATCH but is still required to be tethered when forward facing.

We really like the Radian, it is a bit expensive, but can be used as a booster also so we wont need to replace it.  Rear-facing it takes up a bit of room so you'd need to make sure it fit in the car first (we use it rear facing with our 2 year old and you can get an angle adjuster to make it a bit more upright and hence to take up less space).  It is a long seat which is good for us as I have tall boys (with a 6 foot 6 DH).

We also like the Evenflo - seems a bit more comfy when they are younger as more padding around them.  Both my boys have been in it as babies.  My oldest would have outgrown rear-facing in it (height, not weight) by now and we wanted to keep him backwards a bit longer so hence why we got the radian.  The Evenflo also can be used as a booster so again will last a while.  It is quite high off the seat so an older child might find it harder to climb into than the radian.

thanks heaps for that. That does make it a bit clearer. Those seats are two of the ones I have been looking at. We have a safe'n'sound and a two year old, with one on the way. We figured we'd move the two year old and put the newbie in the safe'n'sound. He is forward facing (just), so the room they take up isn't such a major. If they have a tether we would use it in our car, but just want the ability to stick in mum and dad's landcruiser or bus without breaking the law!

We don't have LATCH in our car anyway, but thanks for clarifying that point.

We have a edinburgh delux booster which doesn't require a teether, it's a forward facing convertible booster seat. It does have to be anchored with a 3 point seat belt not a lap belt though.

One other thing with the Radian is that it is a heavy seat (because of it's solid frame) so if you are carrying/switching it a bit that is something to think about (We swap it between two cars and that is fine, but I wouldn't want to have to lug it a great distance!).  Personally though, for an older child, I would pick the Radian over the Evenflo as I think it would last them longer.  It is also a narrower seat so more chance of fitting in an extra person in the back seat between the two carseats Smile.

apparently its one of the only seats with an optional tether. plus it RF's AND FF's to 18kg.

the almost 5yr old is in a edinburgh travel booster which also doenst need tethered. its 9-18kg harnessed and 15-36kg using seatbelt

I went for the Edinburgh Deluxe Booster too.

I find it's great and love that it does from toddler to child and how it has the 3 different stages.

And it's way easier for my toddler to get in and out of.
