interesting concept but as the year comes to an end money usually gets tight and you have to save more then. You could just save $26.50 each week and get the same result.

True but that's not as much fun..I think the more $ you think of saving the less likely you do, it is pretty easy to start off with $1 & build it up..nothing is stopping you from doing more or less...or your set amount.
But at the end of the day it is interesting to see just how easy it can be to save even if you did a different amount weekly.
As for me it would be perfect since we are saving for an overseas trip in a few months time so it would be easy for us to increase the payments later in the yr.
I am looking at doing it for xmas so I would use what I needed to of what is in there at the beginning of Dec ($1176) & since I would not have to pay any out in Dec for xmas presents I would have no problem saving up to $52 in the last week..if I still wanted to that is.

Oh if only my husband got paid weekly! I think savings are important anyway and have always put money away. Last years all got taken with some large unexpected bills though.

I think it would be hard to do if paid monthly, we are paid fortnightly so I will keep some aside to do the next week.
DH wants to kids to start saving for xmas so they can buy presents for each other & others & start to understand more about money & giving. So he wants to give them each $1 a week to put in their unused money tins which he will start of with a few dollars.
We were going to do pocket money for the kids this yr but decided not to since we are going to Fiji for a holiday & all the kids know we are saving for that. I also don't want then to think they will get paid to make their beds & so on.

We're going to do a version of this for our trip in Aug, but doubling the money each week for 26 weeks, means we end up with $702 spending money for when we go & seeing it's an island, that is heaps

Going to Rarotonga. Don't imagine we'll need much but if we go out to dinner that might take a bit?? We're saying in beach houses so no restaurant deals etc.

yay exciting
we are going to a resort in Fiji. DS2&3 eat free if they eat with us. I did a rough costing of $900 for activities, $1500+ food & then $ to spend...but it depends on how much we can save to what we will do there.

Is the $1500 your flights? Wish flights to Raro were cheaper <sigh>

$1500 is for food, I have roughly worked it out with the meal plans you can buy daily & then drinkies going on holiday is not cheap lol
I want to have $1000 for activities as I want the kids to be able to do as much as pos.

Holy crap that's a lot for food, mind you we can take a lot of food from here providing it's sealed. We're going for 9 days but don't expect it'll cost that much & we're catering for 7.

what can you take from here? we will have a small fridge in out room but no cooking facilities.
My price is for 5 of us with 2 eating free if eating with us, so b'fast & dinner is approx $750 then I know the kids will want to eat during the day so there is another $200+ & then drinks??? while I am lying on the beach lol.
But if I could take stuff, like crackers, spreads & anything else I would. They have a small shop there but it is not cheap according to the reviews I have read.

You can take LOTS of food to the islands. Any commercially prepared baked food, eg biscuits, crackers, muesli bars etc, just make sure the packets are sealed. Spreads like jam should also be fine if sealed, honey may be an issue though. I guess I should add I work for MAF at Auckland Airport (or MPI as we are called now). If you have any questions about coming back into NZ feel free to pm me. I have been on maternity leave since August but the rules never change very much.

sbeach thanks for that, that's really great..I think I will be taking as much as I can now
your links aren't working but have done a search on them.
Are you allowed to bring back items locally made like beads/jewelry made from coconuts & shells?

Sorry about the links...trying to be fancy while using iPad!!
Local handicrafts are generally fine. If there are any actual beads ie dried seeds, then make sure they are drilled all the way through. Shells as part of jewellery are ok. Shells off the beach are okay if cleaned out, free of sand and bugs. Wooden carvings are okay too but require inspection for insect damage, borer. Just check over anything before you buy it. Tourist shops over there are pretty good, we don't fumigate nearly as much as we used to. Also don't be fooled by 'treated' stamps or paperwork, we don't take any notice of it, they just have a rubber stamp made up, to reassure tourists that it is allowed back into NZ/Oz.
As for the food you take over with you , you can bring all the dry goods back, even if the packets are open. Even jam/vegemite/peanut butter. No honey! Don't try bring back anything open with dairy in it but if not opened and made in NZ then fine.
Just declare everything on arrival!
If there is anything else let me know...answering enquiries used to be part of my job, feels good to use that part of my brain!

We took everything we needed for snacks on our Fiji trip. Chips, dips, cheeses, crackers, museli bars etc.
Where ever we are traveling we make a point of finding a supermarket, often local prices for bottled water and coke etc are very cheap - the mark up at the resorts is horrendous.
Jazzy - If you are at an offshore island in Fiji, if you take a trip to Musket Cove Marina there is a small supermarket there.
A family member recently went to Raro AandCsMum and took plenty of snacks. etc. She said there was also a decent supermarket there and that dining out was pretty reasonable (by Auckland prices I would assume).
Enjoy your holidays ladies, I am envious!
