Hi all
I would be very grateful for some advice about giving milk to DS2.
DS2 is 10 months old tomorrow and has never had a bottle. I go back to work in a few weeks and so today I have tried giving him a bit of formula in a bottle - he absolutely hated it. I have never seen such a performance - I put one drop on his tongue and he started retching and actually made himself sick. He continues to push the bottle away and blow raspberries to stop any milk going in his mouth. It would be funny if I didn't need him to take a bottle soon! DH has tried as well with the same result.
I am going to express some milk to help him to learn how to take milk from a bottle but that's not a long term solution as I can't seem to express enough for a full feed in one go. My plan is to keep breastfeeding morning and night and have him on bottles during the day, so I need enough for 2-3 feeds per day - I just can't express that much in the time available.
My only alternative to formula is to go straight to cow's milk. I know it is not recommended to give cow's milk until they turn one, but he is pretty close to that and he is very big for his age (99th percentile). We have done baby led weaning since he was 6 months old and he literally eats anything - this is the first thing he has turned his nose up at!
Does anyone know why we aren't supposed to give cow's milk until 12 months? Is it one of those conservative rules such that giving it to a large 10 month old would be OK?
Obviously I won't do it if it's going to risk any harm to him - now that I've thought of it I am quite attracted to the option though, as it will be a lot cheaper than formula.
Any advice or opinions appreciated.
Many thanks P

It took me about 3 days to get a decent amount for one feed? Could you try & express so that you can get him to 11 months & then use cows milk. I know of a friend who introduced cows milk at 11 months.
I think it's that cows milk as a food isn't a full on food like bm or formula is, so basically it means bubs will not get enough of the right nutrients. If you've got no allergies then it shouldn't be a problem.
What I've read full fat or whole milk is better until 2yo

Keep at it, he will get used to it.
It is hard when they refuse drink/food but they will get used to it...why not try it in a sipper cup also.
Don't give cows milk it is not good for their stomachs & they can not digest it properly so will not get the nutrients they need...my kids did not go on milk till about 2yrs as I used the follow on products for 1yrs+

I would express enough for one bottle feed per day and keep doing morning / night in the mean time .... by 12 months they only need two milk feeds so even if you can get til then you can then introduce cows milk to replace one of the BF's if you need to, or just keep going with the morning / night thing and gradually swop over.
Cows milk is harder on the digestive system than formula, and doesn't have all the other added vits / mins in the correct level that a bubba needs, so I would hold off on the cows milk if you can. Maybe try another formula? If you're using a gold one then switching to a non-gold (they taste a bit better) might help. Otherwise I would just leave hubby or nana at home with him and a bottle one day and see if he will take it if you are gone for a few hours.
Edited to add: It sounds like you are doing 4-5 BF's a day - first thing I would do is try to drop down to 3 slowly, so that there is only one you need to worry about while at work .... hopefully he will take a formula bottle by then, but if not an expressed bottle or a sippy cup of formula with a tiny bit of milo might get drunk! But he will only be a few weeks off 12 months then, so not the end of the world if they whole 3rd milk feed isn't consumed, as food is more important by that stage and at 12 months he should go down to 2 milk feeds anyway.

PS - and if you drop one that would be the time to express to build up some milk stock

Thanks heaps everyone - I am definitely off the cow's milk idea! Have been expressing but I can only get about 100ml at a time so am splitting it up into about four tiny portions for the purposes of trying him on bottles - he still hates the bottle so only has a couple of drops at a time and I don't want to waste the good stuff! I am sure we will get there - he had a settling day at daycare yesterday and they had a go with more success than either DH or I have had.

Just reading the watties sheets, they say to give cows milk as a drink from 12 months but not before, cause of the nutritional aspect.
