Hi ladies,

I was just wondering what you all use for your hair care/body care while TTC - or if you even worry about switching products?

I've done heeeaps of reading and put together a list of bad things associated with early m/c or damaging effects (see my list at the bottom).

So I've stopped using pro-activ and now I'm using Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. But now my skin is really dry and getting quite a few spots

I also swapped my body wash and shampoo/conditioner for Sukin products. The problem I have with these is they smell REALLY strong. I have an over sensitive nose on a normal day and when pregnant my sense of smell goes to crazy levels and pretty much anything makes me ill so I don't think I'd be able to continue using these into pregnancy.

Does anyone have any 'safe' products they can recommend that don't smell strong?

I want to replace all my current products so I need recommendations for:

Face Wash
Body Wash (I can double this as liquid soap)
Shampoo
Conditioner
Deodorant
Moisturiser

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My 'bad' List:
The ingredient sodium lauryl sulfate, a popular surfactant found in shampoos, has been linked to birth defects in animal studies.
Other ingredients to watch out for in haircare products include:
parabens; rosemary; synthetic fragrances, which may contain phthalates; and a preservative called methylisothiazolinone (MIT). Phthalates may alter hormone levels
Stay away from:
1,4 dioxane
Acetone/Alcoholic Removers
benzophenone
bisphenol A (BPA)
canned food
carpet and fabric protectors
flame retardants
formaldehyde
fragrances
hydrocortisone and benzoyl peroxide
Lead
lead acetate
methylbenzene
methylisothiazolinone
microwave popcorn bags
oxybenzone
packaging for greasy foods
Paraben Lotions
perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS)
Perfluorooctanoate (PFOA)
Phthalate and dibutyl phthalate
plastic
p-phenylenediamine
Retinol Creams
selenium
sodium lauryl sulfate
Soy Products
stain-proof clothing
Teflon
toluene
Hi Nell - very interesting and something I never thought about. I don't use too many products so not going to stress too much - nothing like soap and water!
I have enough other things to worry and stress over without checking my products.
I know what you mean about smells - I tried to find a new face cream recently as last one was from uk and the smell of loads put me off - thankfully Farmers had trial ones to check smells.
Good luck finding me products!
I have just ordered some Michael Todd True Organics products online - I watch Shaaanxo on YouTube and she did a very honest review on them as to what she would and wouldn't recommend - also if you click on her link below video you get a 20% discount. These products as far as I know are organic and not too bad price wise - I think I spent $79 and got a face wash, toner, moisturiser and face mask then they threw in a free full sized body wash and pumpkin face mask - I'm certain they had Shampoo's etc on their website too! Admittedly though I didn't look into what is in each product!
Just went back to the website - have a read of this - sounds good to me! Then maybe look at Shaaanxo's video review? I haven't received mine yet so cant pass on my experience with them but this girls reviews have well and truly come through for me in the past! haha
Hey girls, I too am starting to take a closer look at what I am using as i get closer to TTC. I already use Cetaphil, and have started changing to Ecostore products. Jess - Michael Todd products look really good - and the delivery cost doesn't seem too bad. I'd be really keen to hear how you find them when you get them.
Nell I would be totally keen to see your facebook page when its ready - what a great idea!
gosh I have been using Seba Med and thought that was a pretty good product... but not after checking what's in it. Have mainly been using it as a soap substitute for eczema... would be interested in changing products too I think.. love the idea of the facebook page!
Received my Michael Todd True Organics products today and so far I love em :)
Cleanser didn't make my hands sting when I put it on which is a change for me - the exfoliating wash was INCREDIBLE my skin after felt so smooth - then I used the Pumpkin face mask that they had thrown in for free and WOW it stung like a b****!! I wouldn't recommend it if you have sensitive skin - and it smelt gross. I could only stand it around my nose, on my chin and forehead - couldn't go near cheeks or anything - but I had just exfoliated so maybe why it stung so much?
Then the toner smells amazing and it anti bacterial. Tingled a bit which was I liked - made me feel like it was doin its thang.
The moisturiser felt a bit greasy when I put it on but now 30 minutes later its all soaked in and feels sooooo soft! Not greasy at all and no super tight/too dry either! Day one is great - will see after a week or so! Didn't use the body wash though simply cos I left it on coffee table and realised once I was in shower :/ haha
Just updating to say that I am absolutely loving the skin care range! Pimples are GONE and the exfoliant really got rid of any black heads - I'm completely sold on it - and the excema/dermatitis on my hands has cleared up. I'll be ordering shampoo's and conditioners off the website this week I think! Would totally recommend it :) Oh and the body wash I finally used is incredible!
Hey ladies, great thread. I've been slowly changing over all of my toiletries, cosmetics and cleaners. Here's what I use...
Shampoo/conditioner: Matrix Biolage Hydrathérapie
Bodywash: Sukin
Facewash: Thursdays Plantation Foaming Tea Tree Oil Facewash
Toner: homemade with mint and orange (http://www.motherearthliving.com/natural-beauty/orange-toner-zmrz12aszdeb.aspx#axzz2bENvEHZB)
Face Moisturiser: Neutrogena Naturals
Deodorant: Wendyll Nissan's deodorant
I don't wear makeup but I've heard this is a great range Living Nature (http://www.livingnature.com/)
And I recommend Trilogy stuff if you can afford it - great NZ company.
Junior O - do you find the toner effective compared to branded? Its the one thing I really struggle with - I find if I don't use a good one I break out and my skin goes patchy in a couple days - I love the one I'm currently using but I tend to run out of toner before cleanser and moisturiser and don't want to place another order until I need all 3 products - if that makes sense :/ haha
To be honest, I've always had good skin and rarely get pimples. But I've been using my homemade toner for over a month now and have not noticed any change - so no worse and no better.
It's very cheap to make, completely natural so why not give it a go and if it doesn't work, go back to your old product :-)
Just wondering what Deodorant people use? I've tried the Thursday Plantation Tea Tree one, but just find its not effective enough.
This deodorant is really good http://www.ohnatural.co.nz/deodorant.html
Is it very strongly fragranced Sara? I know this sounds tedious but I like when you cant actually smell ANYTHING when you put a deodorant on. I like the Dove one with the dark blue lid - switched to Nivea and found its all I can smell all day after I have put it on! With the dove one you don't smell anything - fragrance, B.O or otherwise.
Thanks Jessaroo, its so hard to find an effective deodorant that is Aluminium free. at the moment I am just trying to minimise the use - ie on my days off I use the natural one, and on work days (where I spend most of my day almost running) I wear the heavy duty Aluminiumm ones. Not the most ideal but the best I can do at the moment!
Hey ladies I just saw this thread and thought id give ya another natural nz company to check out. It's called the herb farm www.herbfarm.co.nz all their products are 100% natural and Im pretty sure they sell all sorts of different products including deodorants.
Haven't tried deodorant myself so can't comment but have started using their cleansing cream and moisturiser and so far love it!! Better than the expensive murad products I was using!!
Hey girls, slightly off topic, but I have decided to blitz our garden (something else to keep me occupied in the TWW!!!). Was wondering if anyone knows of a good DIY weed killer, or a good organic one I could buy?? I don't want to use any nasties like Roundup.
Hi,
Try Kamedis! They have a whole range of all-natural products for all sorts of skin conditions - I started getting a really dry t-zone but moisturising too much gave me spots - I tried the 'SEBO medis' facial cleanser and facial wash and my skin cleared up and became less dry straight away! I would never use anything else now - their website is www.kamedis.co.nz you should have a look!
Has anybody tried Dermalab brands or Apicare? Or know much about them? I was recommended it by my doctor for my hands - he thinks I should switch ALL of my products to one brand or the other and thinks it will help - since falling pregnant the Michael Todd True Organics isn't working on my skin any more and anything else has my hands flare up!
Have heard Dermalab is good :) And if I am right I think it's a NZ made product? Which is even better!
I'm very into clean living (as much as I can afford to..) With the exception of makeup... Cos I dunno about you girls, but environmentally friendly / organic makeup is terrible!! And expensive) right now I am especially into learning about fruits veges pesticides and the "dirty dozen" at the mo, now that I have my skin care, body care, hair care and house hold cleaning products sorted!
I use Sukin Skincare, and highly recommend their 100% cert organic Rosehip oil. Farmers often do 20-30% off Sukin too!
I use Pureology shampoo - Salon quality without sulfates etc
I use Natures Gate deodorant - From Life Pharmacy. They have a fragrance free formula. Can get stick or roll on, several scents available. All aluminium free.
And for body wash and cleaning products I use Eco Store or Earthwise products - Like to change up my scents I use, and tend to lean towards what's the better price!
I make sure I use formaldehyde free nail polish too (opi is free of that luckily)
I should take more care about my hair and my baby hair also. For that, I used the branded products which give the best results without any side effects.
