My 2nd baby is due to arrive any day and I feel under prepared with the whole BF thing!

With my son 4 years ago I only lasted 2 weeks with BF as I got terrible mastitis.

I really want a better go at it this time and would love any tips :-)

Should I feed on only one side each feed? How can I avoid mastitis? Ideas for making breastfeeding easier?

Thanks soooo much!

xx

First of all , congrats! And its awesome you want to bf again after a bad round last time.

To avoid mastitis, look out for the signs. I had a red patch on one of my breasts and had a couple blocked ducts. All I had to do was feed, feed, feed. Have a warm/hot shower and massage the affected area.
When you massage, direct the motion toward the nipple. - A little trick I learned from my midwife.

Talk to your midwife for some tips. If you run into trouble/need help, find a lactation consultant in your area. They are fantastic

Good luck!

I know how you feel, I ended up in hospital when dd was 10 days old with an abscess from mastitis, so was ultra paranoid, so much that I persuaded my midwife to give me a prescription for ab's from I gave birth, 2nd time no mastitis but repeated thrush attacks, sometimes you cant win.

Sages advice is spot on, I spent time massaging in the shower and after feeding and would try and make sure he feed completely off that side, I would massage the other side even if I wasnt going to feed, just to kind of soften everything up. Le Leche League is a great place to go for help before you have problems, your midwife should be able to point you in the right direction :)

Thanks so much. This will be a huge help. Gives me a bit more confidence that I can hopefully do it this time! I'm nervous but here's hoping I'm in control this time rather than out of control!

Thanks again x
