Hi

Im after some advice - I'm 24 weeks pregnant with baby #1 :)

Midwife has told me to cut out all sugar in my diet as the baby is growing too fast..? I dont have a very sugary diet so are wondering if any mums out there had the same problem.. What food recommendations do you have?

Thanks - Katherine

Hi Katherine,

Firstly, don't stress too much, as if your baby is growing fast it does mean a more difficult birth (I had a 9.5 pounder), but bubs will still be healthy.

Basically, if you have high blood sugar levels then there is a lot of sugar available which makes babies grow fatter than average. To avoid this you want to follow a diabetic style diet to manage your blood sugar levels. It's not just sugary foods that can make your blood sugar levels stay high, but also carbs such as bread, potatoes, pasta, etc. Generally eating lots of vegetables (inc raw such as lettuce/carrot) as well as good serves of protein (meat/nuts/chickpeas/etc) and keeping your carb intake to lower portions should help manage things.
If you look up paleo-primal diet you can find lots of recipies etc that meet these requirements, and hopefully find food that you like!

I have a blood glucose meter (I'm pre-diabetic) that I use to check what foods spike my blood sugar levels. You can get without prescriptions (though costs more) if you want to go the extra mile and get one to check what your blood sugars are doing.

from about 20 weeks I measured a good 2-3 weeks ahead,  sent me for extra growth scans etc and even my obstetrician said I was likely to have close to a 5kg baby! i STILL went 2 weeks overdue, had her absolutely drug free, intervention free birth, and she only weighed 3.88kg and was perfect. I had so much extra fluid that 10 days after birth i was 11kg lighter from losing all the fluid! i was just measuring massive and looked massive (to the point i was regularly getting the "ya sure its not triplets?" comments lol. your body knows what to do. if you are being healthy, and looking after yourself, then dont be scared by the doctors. you are designed to do this! :)
