Except if he is in the car or in my arms or feeding. YET..he will settle down after a little bit of crying at night in there for the night????he is still only sleeping around 4-5 hours in a stretch at night too. I have no idea what to do. I have let him scream.(one day up to nearly 3 hours on and off). Tonight he has been going for about 45 mins.

Any Any ideas????

4 - 5 hours is good at night!

Is he too hot or the bedroom too bright?

If he is used to falling asleep while being cradled, you may need to get some advice from Plunket to break the habit, sad/hard as it is.

The other thing to look at is silent reflux. If he is happy in his carseat or held by you, but not lying flat, there might be something there. You could always prop up the head end of his cot on some books (to 30 deg) to see if that helps.

Its weird because at night he generally goes down okay without too much fuss and bother. Its just during the day at home. Carseat - no problem - Arms - no problem. I cant figure out. He does have reflux but I just cant understand why he is like this during the day and not at night.

Did James sleep at night and in the carseat????

It may just be that he is tireder at night but I don't think so .... you're right it does sound kinda weird.

I wish I had some advice, must be hard for you! Maya was never a big day time sleeper, would only go 45 mins at a stretch, but she didn't scream about it so I didn't mind so much, but it must be hard when Blake screams.

You could try getting in touch with Louise at the sleep store. Her advice was a life saver for me! Matthew struggled to get to sleep during the day too unless I was feeding him - although he didn't have reflux like your bub. Turns out he was probably a bit over tired when I was putting him down & needed to be wrapped during the day as well as at night. Louise also gave me a routine to follow which has made things loads easier.
Good luck! It's exhausting trying to get them to sleep when you know they need it but they just won't give in!!

My bubba is still the same, only does 45 mins tops during the day ( a couple of times a day)and usually in his pram or in the car, although he does go down better during the day in his cot now he is a little older although at night its the same as you screaming so i just rock him to sleep in his cot.

I think some babies are just more wakeful and hate to miss out thus the screaming. Just think our next babies will be cruisey and love to sleep....

I read that if you put baby down and hes still crying after 45 minutes - which is a sleep cycle- then get him up as he is just not ready for sleep an overtired baby would fall asleep before that (I couldn't leave my bubba for longer than 5 minutes though i'm too soft!)

4-5 hours in a stretch is pretty good too, in my antenatal group only 1 baby sleeps through the night, the rest wake up 2-3 times a night (at around 5-6 mths old) so don't feel bad you are definately not alone although it does suck sometimes! Hang in there!

hey kelly...
my girl does EXACTLY the same thing, i have tried everything, EVERYTHING, even went to the plunket sleep clinic, even went to a paediatrician (he just said there was nothing obviously wrong with her and that some babies dont like to sleep and are harder to settle than others) -so far nothing has worked sorry.
it can be really hard cos they are so demanding when they are awake all the time and only sleep on you, i know...
if i find anything the helps i will let you know, in the mean time good luck...

EDITED TO ADD - good to know i am not the only one with this problem though..

I had a wee bit of the same problem - not sleeping well during the day. Then I read the chapter on sleep from the Oh Baby! book. Realised that I was probbaly making things worse, and that Amelia was probably actually overtired and I was potentially missing some of her tired signs. Made excellent reading and was helpful and the best thing was that the suggestions worked!
Most bookshops have the book - just go read it in the shop!

My son Josh was the same he didn't sleep at all during the day unless I was holding him or we were in the car or pram. If I did put him to sleep in his bassinette he'd wake up after 5-10 mins. Some babies just don't sleep as much as others and is perfectly normal.
Piper - wow 10 hours good on you - bet you were checking on her though Carmel.

Well we had huge success today and last night. Blake went to sleep at 8 and slept til 6 am this morning. He had a feed and was back down at 7:45 cause was yawning..he woke at 9am..fed and started yawning again exactly and hour later so went down again!! was brilliant. I think I have to really really watch for his quick little YAWNS because if I miss it that is apparently it. I am thinking that all these books that say they are up for two hours and down then 2 hours and down..do not to apply to Blake. I have probably been keeping him up to long cause hes hardly up and had a feed and 20 mins play then he is yawning again!!!!!

Nightmare time after that if we miss it it seems. I was helping my girlfriend with her 2 day old baby so woke up anyway when her baby screamed!!! (cant win he he )

So wil be trying to get some kind of routine sorted. WE have got the bedtime managed. He needs to be in bed by 7 -7:30 for the night and happily sleeps til either 3:30 or 4 or maybe 6 like last night (fingers crossed)

Two hours up and two hours down at his age? Crikey... I would have said a big "phooey" to those people too. Erin is sort of doing that, but it's more like up for an hour and a half, down for two, or one, or up for two, down for one, varies *heaps*. Anyway, you're doing a great job, glad to hear you are finally having some success.

Hey Kelly we have had a bit more success too - actually was coming back to tell you what I found has helped me but looks like you have it sorted already!
Anyway teh plunket nurse told me to rock Maddi in her cot while she is lyin there, but I dont mean rock the cot - rather put your hand on babys tum and gently shake - when she first did it I thought "yeah right - she isnt going to sleep with her head wobblin around like that" - but she carried on and 5 minutes later the eyes were drooping and ten minutes later she was fast asleep - it was amazing!
so now we can get her to sleep like that most times but she only stays alseep for about 45 minutes - but thats ok cos I see it as a step in teh right direction anyway, we will work on the lengths of the sleep later, for now I am just rapt she is actually falling aslepp in the daytime!

I found that neither of my boys slept well during the day until they started crawling. I guess they have a bit of energy and don't use it all. Since Taine started crawling he has at least 2 2 hour naps a day, sometimes one 4 hour one. it is bliss!

BUT when he was younger - it was 30mins tops!

Glad to hear you two are getting some improvements Hannahs always been a good sleeper, but just with the 45minute sleeps, make sure they are actually awake before you go in cos they may just be stirring in between sleep cycles and will go back to sleep.

Bum bum bum bum...Today was another battle but I am feeling confident now about at least watching carefully and whipping him up as soon as I see the yawns...

AND THE LITTLE BUGGER was awake every 2 hours last night all night. Goes from one extreme to the other in this house.

Will definitely try that rocking thing as well.

Thanks everyone..very helpful reading all this.
