i am breastfeeding and i am wanting to start giving my girl a feed of formula in the afternoons so that daddy can look after her while i go out for a few hours... i try expressing but it takes aaagggeees to get a pitiful 60mls and then if i go out i am always worried she will finish what i left for her and still be hungry, so i am wondering if i can carry on breastfeeding but supplement with one bottle of formula a day?
anyone done this or have any advice?
thx!

I think there were a few posts on expressing and stuff about a week ago. but it definately can be done. You will find that if you want to give formula once a day it would be best to do it at the same time as you will effectively be dropping a breastfeed. I did this with Ayja and it was fine.

Anyway if you have a look in the measuring breastmilk post that ANdie started I think there should be a heap of stuff in there about giving bottles and breastfeeding and expressing.

Good luck and good to hear from you.

i am currently giving kayla breast and bottle (formula bottle rather than expressed) it has helped her out heaps, my breastmilk isnt filling her, there's plenty there but it goes through her so fast. anyway i hope its ok to give both because i am plunket didnt seem to be bothered by it yesterday when i mentioned it. i give her a bottle at midday and as her last feed at night and it settles her nicely.

Hi Frantic (haven't seen you on for aaaaaages!)

I think the only thing to check is that she will actually accept formula. It tastes different and some bubbies are not so keen to change flavour But from what I have heard, it generally works fine.

I did it from the start, long winded explanation in a thread last week. She may or may not like it, you can only try. Some advise tho, breast milk is quite "sweet" so different formulas taste different. i used S26, which incidently I was "advised" to use at the hospital (my milk didn't come in, I had to have meds for it)even though they aren't allowed to endorse, a couple of the staff m/w reccomended it as mothers...(they gave us it at the hospital as well)
