Since late this morning, Ella has started getting really tired and fell asleep at 12.15pm (early for her) in the car (equally unusual). She felt hot when she fell asleep so I woke her up and gave her pamol.. she seemed to come right after she'd had a sleep (woke about 2.15pm) and just within the last hour is hot again.. pamol seems to be wearing off so I gave her some more. I took her temperature and it was 38.0 celcius, under the arm so I'm guessing a bit more than that.. what temp is too high? The pamol will bring it down again but I don't have much experience with mystery fevers.. help! thanks ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I always thought anything over 38 is not normal. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

Anything over 37.5 is considered a temp, and yeah, by 39.5 you really should be seeking some medical advice.
How often are you giving the Pamol? to be effective it should be given every 4 - 6 hours.. however remember no more than 4 doses in 24 hours.. by keeping within that time frame you keep the levels in the bloodstream at a constant line instead of it going right down then having to build it back up again. 39 is my cutoff point when I take Maya to the doctor straight away. Or if it is over 38 for more than 24 hours or if the panadol doesn't bring it down. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

When the pamol kicks in, she is totally herself again.. I gave her some at midday, 5pm and was going to give her some now as she's going to bed again (has had a few sleeps today) but might wait a couple of hours incase she needs it in the night. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I have a different spin, if your baby is well ventilated and baking at an under arm temp of 38oC with minimal effect from pamol, then it is time to break out the phone and call the Dr.
Temp taking under the arm is always .5oC lower than rectal, which is .5oC higher and oral (which is accurate but unable to be taken in an infant) I actually need to get one of those infared ear ones myself as they are accurate like the oral ones. I got an electic thermometre in a set from the Baby Factory and it has the guidlines (for thermometre temps) in the packet, Saftey 1st brand. lol Peace I'm a worrywart too.. yeah I knew that the arm one is a bit less but didn't know how much exactly.. never got an ear one as I can tell when Ella is not herself and she was still smiley and happy even when she was burning hot.. a bit tired and fell asleep on me which isn't like her but if she was acting like she didn't know me I'd be off to the A&E in a shot.
She is okay now! Temperature seems to have gone, and she hasn't had pamol since 11.30pm. I stayed up until 12.30 to make sure the temp had gone down, which it had.. also rang heathline to see if that temp was okay, and stayed on the phone to them.. great to have someone just a phone call away at that time of night! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

She is probably fine if she is sleeping it off, I would be looking for other symptoms - grouchiness, spots, off-feed? If still worried I would call the nurse and see what she thinks I should do. I often find it easier to make a 10 minute appointment with the Doc just to hear that she'll be fine, than to worry about it for a day or more. ------------- |

Zaara was like that too when she fell sick a couple of weeks ago. Her temp went to 39.8 but came down as soon as I gave her pamol. She had a tummy bug and only felt better after she had her massive stinky poo....
I took her to the doc twice and rang healthline twice (once at 4.30am)...... Hope she feels better soon, you are lucky at least she is not grumpy like Zaara was.  to you and Ella------------- http://lilypie.com">

Just checking that a temp of 37.8 after jabs today is o.k? Lauren had a really bad reaction this morning, where she was monitored for an hour by 3 nurses and a doctor and I have been watching her like a hawk since we got home as they said she could react again. She is not herself at all and is very grizzly which is to be expected after jabs.
Is 37.8 an o.k temperature for her to have, I really have no idea! I have popped her into bed loaded up with pamol and she is laying there whining like she is in pain poor wee poppet! I hope for a much better day tomorrow! ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

Poor wee Lauren, and Mummy! Must be very frightening for you!!
My opinion.. 37.8 is ok. It's above the 'average' range of 36.5 to 37.5 but not too high. As she is so little and as she had a reaction earlier, I'd be taking her off to the after hours doctor if she gets up over 38 or seems to go downhill at all. Good to hear her temp has settled. Hopefully she'll keep getting better from here on eh?
Just watch that she doesn't get dehydrated with the puking in this yucky hot weather too, you can teaspoon cooled boiled water into her if you think she needs extra fluids  ------------- Mel, Mummy to E: 6, B: 4 and:
