I was thinking for this bub we might use cloth nappies.
But I wouldn't know where to start.
What I was wanting to know was what do others use in the way of cloth nappies?
Whether it's old fold yourself, modern ones?
What brands you recomend? etc.
I would greatly appreciate it Thanks

And... btw... waaaay too many cute options to even consider doing plain flats.
But they are still handy for everything else (and can be used with modern cloth)

We use Fuzzis, but when Krystiana comes along I am planning to wait until she can fit size mediums before going onto cloth - just because I don't think the small Fuzzis are that economic (they have different size inserts from all the other sizes).
Definitely go somewhere you can see them. It's a good idea to view a couple of different types before deciding. (If you host Nikki as a Fuzzis agent - like a Tupperware party - I think she could get you a free one too )

Busymum... I'm not a fuzzi agent I'm doing this through Mum&Bubs and possibly setting up under a different name/business.
So at this stage it isn't as organised as the fuzzi demos.
But more relaxed and informal! And no pressure to buy

I was looking at fuzzis but I dont like their sizings and how I have to buy different for each age, mainly cause I cant predict how heavy bubs will be.
Haleigh never fitted newborn naps frombirth
I will def take a look Nikki, we are just trying to find a cheaper option as these disposables are far too expensive.

Kaz - the more the merrier!
This is a very new thing so would LOVE to have you along.
I'm just doing up a spread sheet at the moment and working out which stock I am going to get in.
Monique - You could start with prefolds and covers while your babe is very young. They are relatively cheap and easy, (buy many prefolds and maybe 4 covers?) and then you could look at getting a one-size pocket or fitted. Pockets are easy, and you could use your prefolds to stuff them with. Or if you used fitteds, then you could continue with the covers as long as possible.
Right. I'm going to order stock ASAP so I can start showing you! (Just trying to justify the cost of setting myself up... poor bank account!)

I'm using the good old cloth flats too, but have recently been converted to fancy overnaps (thanks Gsmum ) which are apparently now called covers of wraps. But am loving how much drier they keep the girls, and they are relatively inexpensive compared to fitted cloth. 3 dozen flats cost me $90, plus 6 overnaps (3 for each baby) were $60 and are sz medium which will do them till they are 10kg which is around 1 year old at least (or maybe not if they keep growing as fast as they are )

how do those over naps you buy at the baby factory etc rate vs fuzzi bunz etc then? curious....
|
Posted By: nikkitheknitter
Date Posted: 22 November 2006 at 8:21pm
Mmmm I haven't actually seen the overnaps at the Baby Factory (avoid it like the plague!) but I'd say they are fairly useable. I've heard of a few that people rave about, but unsure if the Baby Factory ones are included as I don't know what brand they are! But I know Emma bought some from BabyOnline.co.nz and she has found them quite good.
But the overnaps in comparison to fuzzis are a little bit of a different story: fuzzibunz are a pocket system. Which contain a waterproof outer, a stay-dry inner, and you add the absorbant stuffing in the middle, using what ever you wish: a folded up flat nappy or prefold, a microfibre insert, a hemp insert, a microfibre/hemp insert, a hemp/burley knit terry insert etc etc
Apparently using a cover over a fitted (or prefold - correct me if I'm wrong Deb!) is one of the most leakproof systems around.
But weighed against the simplicity of fuzzis, who comes out on top is really up to the user!
Edited so that I don't sound like an idiot - probably didn't work .

The overnaps from the likes of Baby Factory (do you mean the cream ones with velcro and plastic leakguards?) work ok but the velcro tends to wear out quickly and the plastic cracks.
If you are going down the flats/prefolds/fitteds and covers road (as opposed to pockets), it would probably be better to invest a couple of extra dollars on better covers/wraps that dont have the plastic in them (it doesnt breathe).

nikki you didnt sound like a dork...
and you are prob right a fitted and a cover is prob more leak proof cause there is two things for anything to penetrate to get out.
snazzipants have some gorgeous fitteds at the moment and a discount on a lovely three pack they have.
i use prefolds mostly myself and there is nothing cuter than toby walking around on a hot summer day with a t shirt and an uncovered prefold.
oh and re the babyfactory covers - they were good when toby was a baby and not moving, the velcro does go easily so not good for an active bub. most modern cloth covers now have the stronger aplix fastening or snaps.

yeah those were the ones i had seen - you do real nappies under them...good to know your experiences...
Im not too fussed on nappies looking pretty = my compromise for using real nappies is in home only and when out - disposables...I cant think of anything worse than carrying stinky real nappies around...
not too eco friendly over here i know...but at least i have given in to real nappies of some form. Pressure from DH and my mum!

Bombshell I don't care much about the eco stuff either but it is nice to have all the nappies washed and no lingering smells thereafter... not like a rubbish bin/bag which smells all week long!

Its not actually that hard using them when you are out. I just have a small bag and wet nappies go straight in, dirty nappies get "contents" flushed and then nappy in the bag.

Same, I got a fuzzi tote bag and it's even got a fabric strip to add a few drops of essiential oil...I've certainly never noticed a smell!
I was going to use disposables when going out then I realised it was easier to use cloth full time. Now I won't look back!

A friend of mine said she uses wonderoos, I took a look at their website and they look exactly the same as fuzzibunzs but they cheaper and one size fits all.
Do you have them Nikki?
I hate the smell of disposables and being in wellington there have been times when our neighbours bins have knocked over in the wind (ours is usually far too full to blow over lol) and all their dirty nappies get scattered around in the windy and its grose.
I'm wanting cloth more because they are economical, I wont ever use disposable again, the amount we've spent in the last 14months is so much, we couldve saved all that.

OSFA doesnt always fit all - IYKWIM! They definitely work well for some bubbas, but like all nappies, dont work so well for others. I've tried one size naps a few times and they never seem to fit just perfect.
Its so hard cos people want to get their nappies sorted before the baby arrives but we have no idea of size or body shape until they arrive... Plus there are sooooo may brands to choose from.

re doing cloth when out - i never found it was any different than doing disposables cause i had to take them home then too. i never left them behind at someones place.
and OSFA normally arent that good for newborns. i trialed a OSFA that had adjustable leg guard elastic and they were pretty cool and fit both my boys really well. but i havent tried many others - except a smart-e-pants.

That was what decided us! We took disposables to the inlaws thinking it would be "easier" but we still had to bring them home! Didn't do it again after that.

There's always the "Friends" disposable nappy bags to reduce odours... for either disposables or washies.
As for newborns, I think I'll always start in disposables until I'm ready for managing the washing load and go into washies by the 2-3m mark.
ETA: Oh and I have Fuzzis size mediums so they won't fit until 2-3mos anyway.

Monique - Don't have wonderoos, and yeah, a lot of babies don't fit the one-size nappies until they are a bit bigger, which is why it is a good (and cheap) idea to start off with covers and prefolds.
I do/will have a one size pocket nappy like Wonderoos, but called Mummy's Touch (or Mommy's Touch for the Americanos out there!) http://www.mommystouch.com/ - http://www.mommystouch.com/

|

I only started using cloth on my little monkey when she was 10 months
I am currently pretty much exclusively using Fuzzibunz... but also have a Swaddlebee pocket (old style - apparently they are much improved!) and Stuffables (possibly the leakiest nappies I have ever encountered... they are sitting in the back of the 'nappy drawer')
I must admit, most of the info on what works best at what age comes from reading the Nappy Network Forum. And I am going to test out all the products I am selling on my friend's cutie little 6 month old. I can't wait for that!

Oops... I forgot I also have Peapods nappies too. Just bought them the other day to use at night as they have a bit more room to stuff than the Fuzzis... and I bought a bigger size so that the rise would be longer. (Han seems to leak up the front...? I think it is because she is a tummy sleeper)

Those nappy bags are great. I haven't used them, (because Ive been lucky enough Haleigh has never done number 2's in public only at home) but when I was working in an appartment complex I saw some mums use them, which was great because dirty nappies really stink out appartments.
I don't really know anything about these pocket nappies so it's good to get all the advice from you all.
my mum was going to buy some when I had Haleigh I think they were snazzipants, but DF was against cloth of any kind, until now, so it's great he's warmed up to the idea and wants cloth (mainly cause he's sick of the nappy smell lol).
We are now wishing we got some for Haleigh, but figured it's too late now with her being on her way to toilet training.

I just bought some new nappies for Hannah even though she is mostly toileting during the day. I needed something for over night... altho now she doesn't have a bottle before bed she doesn't wet nearly as much as she used to. So possibly I bought the new nappies more for me than her
And snazzipants are great too. I haven't used them personally, but I have heard wonderful things about their performance... and the ladies who run the business are FANTASTIC. The most helpful people I have ever come across.

we use Fuzzis on Jake for night and day sleeps. Actually one of the only nappies that haven't leaked! We';re lucky in that anything we buy, we KNOW that we will have for taine,so thinking of the expense, it works out way less!
