Hi ladies, just wanted to see if anyone could help me out.

My husband, myself and our 5.5 month old daughter are moving from Sydney to Wellington in 3 weeks time (job transfer).

I'm a Kiwi but have been away for about 10 years and my hubby is English so we don't really know anyone. How do I go about finding a mums group and what is the protocol regarding plunket, do I just rock up at my local one?

We need to rent a house before we buy, so we can work out what areas we like but are finding it hard to find anything decent to rent on the net! Looking at being quite central, Kandallah, Ngaio etc or even Petone, Lower Hutt.... any suggestions on areas, am getting ready for it to be a shock compared to the Sydney rat race!

Umm.. I have so many questions!!! What is the shopping like for both mum and bub, is there a big variety, is the weather really THAT bad? I have visions of not being able to take bub out for walks in the pram!!!

Oh, and what activities are there for little ones, ie; swimming, gymbaroo etc?
Thanks guys, I'm kind of stressing out here, it all happened so fast and I'm really woried I'll miss all my friends here in Sydney so trying to stay positive.

Us Wellington mamas aren't too scary, I promise!

I'm on the Southern side of Welly, bit more city-ish but still very family friendly - Kilbirnie, Island Bay, Lyall Bay, Miramar, Hataitai.

Shopping is fine and dandy... probably nothing on Sydney, but accepatable. There is a semi-sizeable mall in Lower Hutt, or the usual shops and some funky alternatives in the city. And then cool baby shops scattered about - BabyStar in Newtown, Infantesimal in Island Bay, Mini Me in Petone etc.

Lots of playgroups and stuff around, plenty of family-friendly sections of town. At my end, Kilbirnie has quite a bit on offer with pool/library/playgroup in close proximity. Out in Johnsonville there is also lots of kidlet oriented stuff.

There is an OhBaby coffee group who get together occasionally. Some of them might refute the fact that I claim to be a part of the group due to non-attendance

Hope the move is an easy one! Good luck!

Oh yeah, and generally you can just rock up at Plunket. Phone book has all the numbers and just select the one closest... I'm sure they'll be quick to redirect you if it isn't the right one.

AND the weather is horrible. No doubt about it. (Based on today... had you asked me yesterday I would have said that Wellington is the sunniest place on earth!) The wind is crap. Ever present. But you do get used to it. And you can definitely venture outside. Summer is on its way... maybe see it by January???

Hi Jacq, Im Kerryn, not much good to you on the shopping front or where to go as I live in Christchurch but did the move from Sydney 3 years ago ........seems like a whole lifetime ago. Well its two babies ago lol. It is a bit of a shock to start with but things do come together. If you would like someone to talk to when you are missing your sydney friends as I still do, just send me a private message and we can have a chat or e-mail kezplanet@hotmail.com   Good luck with the move

thanks ladies, I will definately be keen to meet up! Isla (pronounced eye-la) will need some playmates and I'll need some female company to keep me sane!

Jax we live in Mosman, I actually got all emotional last night watching the final of Australian Idol. It was held at the Opera House and when the fireworks started I could actually hear them outside while
I was sitting on my couch and see the lights in the sky!! It really hit me that I'm leaving my home that I love and all that I've known for the past 8 years!!

Anyway looking on the bright side, I can't wait for Isla to grow up being a littke kiwi girl!

Thanks Kerryn, I will mail you when I start missing all the Aussie elements of life I'm used to... I'm already organising weekend trips over here to get my fix! Are you Australian or NZ'der returned home, where did you live in Sydney?

Ah that's the bonus of flights atm... it's almost cheaper to fly to Australia than it is to fly back to Rotorua!! hehe
