Hi all. Trish's husband here.
Aidan Watton, born 26th November 2006, 5.15pm (NZTime). 26/40 premature. 2.5 pounds or 1135 grams for the metrically enlightened.
Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place. These forums confuse me.
Anyway, off to see him now. Thanks for all your support.

Thanks all for your kind wishes.
I've been to see them today and the news is all good. Hopefully today the tubes will be removed and he'll be breathing on his own.
In the mean time here are some photos. Keep in mind that Trish (tastic) has tiny tiny hands. A word of warning, these photos may be a little unnerving for the medically squeamish.

He is gorgeous! You still can't really understand how small they are from photos though, only when you see them in real life! Ashleigh wasn't intubated - she went onto CPAP straight away and seemed to do well so hopefully Aidan does too when they remove the tube. And its lovely that his eyes are open, Ashleigh's were still fused at birth and didn't open until she was around 2 weeks old! Wow those pics bring back sooo many memories! All the best guys, look forward to hearing the updates

Hey all Trish here,
Well what a rough few days! I'm home from the hospital - not that I wanted to leave :(
heres the birth story: (its long sorry)
My son Bailey woke at 3am and I gave him a bottle, got back to bed myself and next thing I was awoken with contractions, at 7am Bailey woke for the day and I got up with him, while changing him, I was getting more contractions and thought I had better start timing them, they were 5-8 minutes apart lasting 30-45sec. By 8am they were really painful so I tried to call out to Jamie but got no answer (he had a really bad headache and little had I know he had actually passed out/fainted!) 8.15am I decided to call my midwife who was concerned and thought she may need to call an ambulance (she was concerned as I had Bailey in 3 1/2 hours!) but she came and picked me up and took me to the hospital - Jamie who was unwell anyway had to stay at home with Bailey, got to the hospital at 9am where I was connected to the machines(sorry don't know what they are called but one was for Aidan's heartbeat and the other was to see if my uterus was actually contracting - which it was) they called the doctor who came and checked me and she got worried when I was 50% effaced (hadn't dilated though) she took swabs and bloods to send away to check for infection as that maybe causing my contractions. I was then given a shot of steroids (to help Aidan's lungs if he was born) and then they started on the tablets which are supposed to stop the labour.. I had 4 'quick acting' ones each 15 minutes apart, then 30 minutes I had a 'long acting' one, contraction slowed down, she then scanned me to see which way Aidan was presented (head down or up etc) He was bum first but she couldn't see his legs. about 30 minutes later the contractions started up again so they gave me another 'long acting tablet' to try to stop them again. at this stage they put a drip in my arm incase I needed any fluids/antibiotics etc she then said that I would probably end up having an c section due to them not knowing where his legs are, they gave me the gas/Entonox incase I felt like I needed it about 30 minutes later contractions were getting really bad and coming really fast, Doctor checks me again and I'm 5cm dilated!!! I asked for pain relief and she mentioned pethidine I said 'sure' (I was in pain due to being stuck to the bed because of the wires) She then said she would have to check with her supervisor as she doesn't want to give it if Ill be having him soon! well she went away and came back with an anesthesiologist to give me an epidural if I wanted (they didn't want to risk giving me the pethidine) I said YES! he started to talk to me about it and I keep having contractions, the doctor came in and he started to set the epidural set up but I keep having contractions, the doctor checked me again and I was FULLY DILATED! she started to panic! next thing I know I had... 2x hospital midwifes, my midwife, the doctor, the pediatrician and 6 nurses/doctors/midwifes from the neonatal unit in my room! she said 'let me know when you get the urge to push' I was like I really need to Poo! next thing my legs are up on stirrups and they are telling me to push! (at that stage I wasn't allowed the gas :( - I was in pain!) I started to push and everyone said I pushed really well - that was encouraging. All of a sudden I heard a thud on the floor! I automatically thought they had dropped Aidan! I SCREAMED! I looked up at the doctor and thought 'you dropped my baby you bitch' they were all like don't worry keep pushing! I was crying as I was thinking why aren't they picking him up off the floor! next thing I heard... 'I can see a foot!' and then... the pediatrician hand was 'up there' holding onto Aidan so my uterus wouldn't crush him (I tell you what... man they hurt more then anything!) 2 more pushes and Aidan was born. The only thing I remember was Aidan looking at me, 2 minutes my placenta was delivered (or should I say PULLED OUT!) Aidan was immediately put on machines as he had 'apparently' let out a little cry (I didn't hear it!) they wheeled him around to the side of the bed when my hand was placed on his head... then he was taken away!
I found out afterwards what that thud was... I had pushed so hard it was my waters! not only had they hit the floor with a 'bang' but the doctor was fully covered as was the pediatrician! hahahaha :D
his stats:
Aidan Jake Watton
born 26/11/06 at 5.15pm
Weighing in at 1135g or 2lb 8oz
Length 34cm or 13.385 inches
Apgar Scores: 1min: 7 5mins: 9
He is still on the ventilator but they said that is normal! They cant give us an excate date but like they say we can only take one day at a time!
Thank You EVERYONE for all your thoughts and kind words (yes Jamie's been ringing and telling me what you all have said - Its been cheering me up)
I'm Doing as ok as can be expected considering whats happened! I really didn't want to leave the hospital today but I'm going up there first thing tomorrow to spend a couple of hours with him!

Yeah Im still in shock! my body went into shock so much I started vomitting after I had him! and then when they tryed to take blood they could 'find my veins' as they had 'shrunk'!
it all happened so quick!

Trish what is the set up there? in Palmy we have boarder mother rooms where the mums stay separate to the postnatal ward, and come and go as they please.. but they go there once they are discharged from postnatal.. then mothercraft rooms that mums move into just before they take babies home.
Although I guess you would possibly want to be home with wee Bailey anyway. The birth sounds very traumatic for you, here's hoping all the NICU staff there are nice and supportive (I bet they should be).. I know it sounds and seems so far away, but it will go by in a bit of a blur, weeks turn into months very quickly in places like that. The funniest thing is soon you'll be thinking "wow, he's getting so big!" yet everyone else who sees him will think he's tiny. It's definately no consolation at all, but you get to see him grow before your eyes. (That is my very favourite part of the job, seeing tiny helpless fragile babes turn into chubby bubbys).
Take care and all the best, make sure to take care of yourself now, it's all too easy to get tired early on.
I look forward to seeing pics of him as he grows bigger and stronger. Well done.

Congrats again Trish and Jamie. Aiden is such a good weight for a 26-weeker, and his apgars are better than a lot of full termers which is awesome. Sending him some of my gremlins super-growing vibes...

Congrats Trish and family and thank you very much for sharing your story. I'm sitting here at work sobbing like a fool (luckily I'm on my own today!). It just brought back so many memories of when my best friend had her baby at 26 weeks (by CS due to IUGR). He's now a very healthy 14 month old.
I'm not sure where you are in NZ, but my mate had her baby in Chch NICU and the staff there were amazing and very supportive, couldn't have asked for better. Hope you have the same care.
Be strong for your precious wee son

Thanks everyone for your kind words! We are doing 'ok' Aidan is a real fighter!
Toni_akl yep we are in chch too, the staff in NICU are great and very understanding of our needs! Dont think we could have asked for better!
Aidan got the line out of his umbilical cord today so went onto his tummy for the first time! he must of liked it as he fell asleep straight away! he also got the 'long line' in (a drip in his arm which goes up the arm and into his chest just by his heart! so we had to leave for that!) otherwise he is doing well and they say hopefully we can hold him tomorrow!
fingers crossed we can (well if I can handle it that is!)
Trish

Ashleigh loved it aswell and her sats and heartrate stabilised so well and she was so contented when we had cuddles Make sure you come back and let us know how it was!! Is he still on the ventilator or on CPAP now?

Trish I cant wait to hear how the cuddles went...mum worked in SCBU and NICU etc for a while and is an advocate of kangarooing and skin to skin cuddles so i do hope you and Aidan get to have heaps of those real soon!
He is so beautiful and he looks so strong for how early he came into our world. Im so glad to hear you are doing "ok"...it can only get better for you from here. IS hubby ok - I know he was sick the day Aidan was born - did that pass?

Hey all, I got to hold him yesterday, not a kanga cuddle due to the venterlator but I still got to hold him!
It was SO HARD! I cryed the whole time
Ive put a couple of photos up http://tnt.net.nz/aidan/ - HERE! Sorry about the quality of them, they took the photos for me as I didnt have the camera and when they printed them out they were only 3x4 (half a normal 6x4)
on another note, we had a really bad day yesterday, not only was Aidan in NICU but Bailey was in ED hes been vomitting and had diaarohia since friday morning and not keeping anything dwon but even water!, so we took him to the hospital (on advice from the healthline)
Hes got that gastrointavitis (sp) again it wasnt bad enough(luckly) to keep him in there so mum has taken him back to her house for the next few days so I can at least still go up to Aidan
This week has been so hard and it never seems to end if its not my children it friends of mine too that have had a extremely hard week! I know 2 friends who have had losses within a couple of days from each other, and Im crying for them at the same time as having Aidan being born so early
So anyway, I hope you all are ok and everyone that is pregnant is doing good
Take Care
Trish, Jamie, Bailey and Aidan

Hey all, well I just got back from the hospital, Aidan is 1 week old! but he is not doing too well today Hes needing more oxygen, arrived this morning and he has another drip in his right arm as one of his blood tests showed increased white blood cells (means infection) they they have started him on antibiotics (test results take 48 hours to come through... have to start antibiotics straight away as the infection could be really big by then!) Hes taken a step back in the feeding too, gone from 1ml 2 hourly to 0.5ml 4 hourly as his stomach isn't tolerating it very well!
As for Bailey hes not doing any better He is at my mums as she is doesn't want me to catch anything so I can still go and see Aidan (I LOVE MY MUM!) I miss him so much but it still going to be at least 3 days before I can see him *CRY*
Wish me luck that the next few days will be a bit better
IVE HAD THE MOST CRAPPY WEEK EVER!!!!!
*Yawn*
