Hi everyone,
I have contacted my HR, sieved through Employment NZ websites, and old threads here but can't find the answer to this one.
I am due to deliver two weeks before the date at which I become eligible for Government paid parental leave (6 months work). Does anybody know, if I go back to work straight away, or take annual leave for those two weeks, can I apply for PPL (as a primary carer or an expectant mother) starting on the date at which I am eligible? If so, does being on annual leave for those first weeks classify as 'work' under the 6 month rule?
Any thoughts would help. Thank you...

Hi Anna!
I don't know for sure, but I would think that taking annual leave for those first 2 weeks would still count as work. If you have worked for a company for a year but taken 4 weeks of annual leave during the year the government would still see you have been employed for a year rather than 11 months.
Taking 2 weeks annual leave isn't starting your maternity leave, it is just having a 2 week holiday while you look after your baby ;)

Hi there Imogen and anybody who is looking for the answer to this in the future!
I spoke to the Employment office and to be eligible for PPL you need to have worked at least 6 months before your estimated due date - if you are short 2/3 days you are out, no sliding scale.
Otherwise, Imogen is right: annual leave still classifies as 'work'.
Not great news for me but I understand why this rule is in place - it makes sense. Just think a sliding scale would make more sense.
