Emma Rose has had a fever since yesterday afternoon. It was up to 40.2 last night, but went down to about 38.7 when I gave her Panadol. Since this morning it's been between 38 and 39. I've been Baby Panadol-ing her every six hours and have kept her cool (in just a diaper), am trying to get her to drink Pedialyte and letting her have all the cuddles she wants, but now I'm getting worried. I rang the GP and got the first appointment available, but it's not until tomorrow afternoon. She's only ever had a fever when she was teething, and this doesn't seem like that -- for one thing, it' a lot higher than her teething fever, and for another thing, when she's teething she's usually grumpy but still active, and at the moment she's just clingy and lethargic. Do you think I should take her to the A+M? I'm still pretty new at this so not sure when to "cross the line" and take her in. A friend told me that even if I take her, they'll just advise Panadol and cuddles... Which is what I'm doing already... (There's no rash or spots, either -- believe me, I checked!) |

Personally I'd take her to A+M. I'm surprised your doctor didn't fit you in today given her high temp last night. She may have an ear infection or something like that, and if so, the earlier you can get antibiotics (if needed) the better. ------------- Selina http://lilypie.com">

I would. My cutoff with Maya is 39 degrees. If it gets over that, or stays up for 24 hours then I take her to the docs. If you go to A and M during the day then the wait is not usually too long and I know that White Cross don't charge for under 5's before 7pm. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

What a worry! I just got off the phone with Healthline (tried Plunketline and was transferred there) and the nurse was really kind, exercised caution, assessed all the symptoms and gave me advice. In the last 10 minutes Em's fever has suddenly gone down to 37.7, so the Panadol must be working. I'm going to wait until noon, then take her to the A+M if it spikes again. Now the question is... How can I get her to drink the $15 bottle of Pedialyte? CRIPES, it was expensive!!! |

Ummmm... I wish I could help but Maya would never drink it. Not for lack of trying - when she was chronically underweight they ended up having to feed it to her thru a nasogastric tube coz she was so stubborn about not taking it!
You can get it on prescription to make it a bit less ouchy cost wise tho. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

I rang healthline and they told me that thje fever would spike, maybe over forty, and then go down. they said to only worry if the pamol didn't reduce the temp. I asked for a cut-off point and they refused to answer it and went on and on about why fevers happen. fat lot of good it did me!
For me, I give pamol and then trest again. if the temp doesn't go down, i'd go. And if it continues over 24 hours, i'd go to the doctors as well. that said, I went a couple of times with each boy and was told it was "viral" and to give him some pamol. it is good for peace of mind though. |

yah I agree...40 is too high. She could be going thru the tummy bug thing that Zaara went thru few weeks ago. Sounds exactly the same!!
I took her to Docs twice and rand healthline (useless) twice too. If you are worried take her to A+M...you will feel better for it! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

If nothing else I'd ring the Nurse and make an appointment for tomorrow, so she can be checked before the weekend. If she suddenly improves between now and then, you could cancel but at least you have the appointment as a back-up. ------------- |

I would be taking her to and A+M. As Emma said there is one in Auckland that doesn't charge so even if they just say Pamol and cuddles it didn't cost you and at least you know she has been seen by a professional. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

As an alternative to the Pedialyte (Kiya won't drink it either) my old GP suggested lemon/lime Powerade with a pinch of salt added. He said with the little bit of extra salt it has a similar electrolite level to Pedialyte, and that he recommends the lemon/lime one because it has the least amount of added colouring! ------------- Becca, mum of 2 girls & 3 boys |

Here's the pathetic little thing just a few minutes ago... My mom wanted a pic so she could send sympathy cuddles! Em's currently sleeping on my lap, sitting up, her face buried in my boobs. LOL... My husband's auntie, who is a nurse, came round and checked her, and gave me the same advice as Healthline -- watch her, push fluids, paracetamol, cuddles. Her fever has been hovering between 37.5 and 38.5 for the last couple of hours, going up and down. If her temp gets anywhere near 39 we're going right to the A+M, as you're right, peace of mind is most important! I've just found some fruit-punch flavoured powdered Pedialyte my mom sent me, so will try mixing that up and see if she prefers it to the bubblegum stuff, which she won't drink at all. If not, I'll try the Powerade thing, that's a good idea! Can you guess how much OHbaby! work I'm getting done at the moment? Sigh. Being a mum can be so scary! |
