And it looks like my baby will be having surgery before Christmas Apparently the kidney reflux is not such a major, but she has something called a ureterocele which is a blockage in the tube between the bladder and the kidney which has to be removed. They will do it under general anasthetic at Starship, and she will probably be in hospital for 2-3 days. While she is there they want to do another test to check her kidney function too where they run dye thru an IV line, not 100% sure how that works.

I feel confident in the surgeon, and he explained everything very clearly, but the idea of my tiny little baby having a general anasthetic is a bit mindblowing, and just the thought of someone poking around inside her is a bit scary too.

Mercedes will have to come to hospital with us as I'm still semi-feeding (although I think this whole thing might spell the end of the breastfeeding, not sure) and my Dad is going to come and stay with Maya.

What a drama. When it rains it pours I guess But I do want to say thank you to all of you for your support this far, it helps to know that we're not alone.

ETA: While we are in Starship they want Mercedes to have an ultrasound too just to double check that her kidneys are ok.

That's the thing Mummy_Becks - I don't know if I WANT to be there When Maya had her general I had to hold her while they put the mask on to put her to sleep and all I could think of was when we had our cat put to sleep. Her eyes rolled back in her head and she went all floppy. I managed to hold it together till I got out of the OR and then I burst into tears and didn't stop crying until she was in recovery.

And she was 2 - how am I going to cope with seeing my 7 week old put under?

Might be a little different with the ages, what about Willie could he do it? I'm sure the anethitist(sp?) would understand if you didn't go in.

Wow! Big hugs Emma. Do you know when she will have the surgery? and will you have a support person with you?

I;m sure, and I bet you know too, that Sienna will be fine, but I agree, the thought of a seven week old having an op is scary as! Let us know when it is, and we can text you! well, i can't cause i don't have a cell phone, but I'm sure others will! oh....just realised that if you are in hospital you may not be able to use a cell phone...hmmmm. will think of snother idea.

Big, big, big hugs, Emma! Please let me know if we can do anything to help -- bring food? Watch Maya? I can't even watch while Emma Rose has blood drawn, so I can't imagine having to be there while your baby is put under. When is the surgery scheduled for?

Oh Emma, how scary for you!
They are a great team at Starship, and I know that she will get the best of care. (and you too if my experiences are anything to go by!)

Wow I can't imagine that and I sure wouldn't be able to handle being there. Hopefully you find strength from within or Willie or a nurse can help?

And in a way, she's a really lucky girl to have it all done before she's old enough to understand what's going on.

But to you, you're amazing.

Thanks

LOL Bombshell Willie is more of a sook than I am!

We don't have a date yet, he said he will have to look at his schedule but that it is a "matter of some urgency" and would be done before Xmas, and that often they book the surgery before even seeing the patient because that kind of ultrasound/MCU result always means surgery.

So I guess we wait and see.

It's telescopic surgery so I assumed it was up her girly bits, but them Mum said they can also do telescopic surgery thru a cut in the belly button so not sure now how they will do it. I didn't think to ask, was too busy trying to process the whole thing.

Emma
From a medical point of view this is great as they will reduce any damage or scarring to her kidneys and lots of future damage and problems by getting the surgery done now.
From an emotional point of view, don't know what to say, I can't even imagine how you will get through this, but I know you all will. I see with some people that seem to have bottomless resources of strength and determination, I know you will find something to draw on.
take care

Claire

Oh poor little bubba. Well just think at the end of the day your little one will feel better, but it certainly wouldn't be easy to go through as parents.   Big hugs chickie and will be thinking of you.

Hugs Emma. Like Claire said it is good to get it doe now even tho she is so little, harder on mum than Sienna I think If you dont want to be in with her when they do the general, then dont, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Also if they do laproscopic surgery, its usually a few small "holes" in the belly - one for the telescope thingy, one or two for any instrumetns they use... Much better than actually being opened up. Take care

Thanks Deep down I know that the surgery is really important for her long-term health, but part of me still wants to lock her away and not let anyone near her...
