I was told by someone yesterday that the statistics for NZers earning over $100k is 3% and over $50k is only 18%
At the moment we have rent, mortgage and loan (cos we are building) but take that out and we would still be poor, not struggling so much but poor so I hate to think how people in the lower brackets survive, specially with house prices and rent going up so much in the last few years.

But Family Support has gone up a lot more than housing so it's actually a bit easier.

Yep Robyn and the average anual income is about $34,000. We couldn't survive on twice that! And we don't even live extravagantly, it costs that much just to eat!

Me and hubby have found out about the Accomodation Supplement. It is based on your gross week to week income rather than your yearly groos wage. You can either make an appointment to see them or print out a form and send it in http://www.workingforfamilies.govt.nz/accommodation-supplement/ - Working for families - accomodation supplement.
Every little bit helps!

Hey Clare, we were like that for a while too, but things have a way of working themselves out when you least expect it... The 'm' department is finally going well for us at the moment (yay for living in a small cheap town!) after much stress, so hang in there chickies

thats how i feel too ellen. as long as my kids are happy at the end of the day, and i feel rich in a different way,i feel blessed to have my beautiful girls, and a wonderful husband.. they make me happy, and make life LIFE they dont care about clothes or getting flash things (yet) and i hope i can continue to install (that the right word?!) the same values in them that i grew up with.

it is tough though when you struggle to make it week to week and get the stopid bills paid. we struggle a lot and i feel for families that are worse off than me because i find it hard and know there are people with less than me, it doesnt seem fair.

I don't know how we coped now, but when we first got married, my inlaws gave us $50 a week because our income was that much less than our expenses!

Gah ... yep, know the feeling. DH has been stressing a bit lately about it all, which in turn makes me stressed. But I have utter faith we'll be fine - something always seems to work out.

Am hoping he'll get a payrise, which will be back-dated, but still waiting to hear - wish they'd hurry up so it can go in this month's pay! Oh yeah .. he gets paid monthly!

I figure as long as the kids have food, we have a roof over our head and power etc... then everything else just has to wait. Its just scary when you add up all the debt! We dont qualify for much family support in fact we would be better off financially if i didnt work but mentally i need the break. Maybe I'll win lotto this week, yeah right.

I love money - I just wish it was more attracted to me.
As a former WINZ worker (sshhh), it is sometimes worth making an appointment with one of their non-beneficiary case managers just to pick their brains for half an hour over what is available. They often know about extra assistance through IRD and all sorts of other places.

Because I'm self employed a lot of my income is written off as expenses which means we do qualify for a bit of FS and an AS which is good, every little bit helps.

Grr - mortgages!!!

One of main reasons I'm heading back to work just 6 weeks after bubs is born - otherwise we won't be able to afford to pay for the house and live at the same time!

Gosh, you people and your "wanting to live" AND have a roof over your head! fussy!!

I hate living week to week. I wish we cvould win big wednesday....funny after that $10million went, they were advertising $2 million. Lewis and i were both, "huh, poxy $2 million, thats not enough"...then later realised what we had said! Hey, $20 would be pretty good. Course, people don't tend to win things unless they buy tickets..

ALTHOUGH, according to my email, i have won $20,million euros in a Nigerian Lottery I didn't buy tickets for. i must keep it a secret however, and send them $100 to pay for the taxes. sounds reasonable....

It's a tough one, we always want more! But when I think about it, we just lived off Student Allowance and FS for 3 years with only a little part-time income on the side, and it was really tough. But we learned how to budget and now, even though DH gets not much more than minimum wage AND is on-call (so if there's no work one day he doesn't get paid) we are actually doing pretty well. But it sure takes guts to decide to live within that and stay home and give myself to my kids instead of going out to work all for a bit more cash.
